IMHO, science explores what is testable - and religion explores what is not testable. Both have their place in our society and their own set of rules to fit their nature. Then we are back to my original post. It was mankind's fear and scientific ignorance that led them to fabricate Gods and religion in the first place. Religious stories were then passed on from generation to generation

Ashes to ashes and dust to dust. Its interesting to hear (not the first or last time for me) someone say that a belief in no afterlife (I'll let the no god thing slide) is sad or disturbing to them and that it promotes the ills of society and is also a product of those ills. I find it can have the opposite effect just as reasonably. If you believe that this is your only shot and that the most important thing you can do here on this big blue rock is to raise your children to do better than you an
@ ghostwes that story almost had me converted to Atheism of all things lol. If only it hadn't had a god in it I might have bit the forbidden fruit.
There are other Churches that claim an apostolic succession though not so direct as the two you state and often because their founders where ordained by the Catholic Church even though they are far from its grasp now. My comments about Apostles was based on the idea that Jesus had many more disciples than 12 and that many of them fulfilled missions for god equal to those achieved by the agreed upon apostles. There are many "gospels" omitted from your bibles that are not written by those twelve,
I have no problem with a Creationism museum per say but this particular incarnation of the belief is pretty darn far from any sort of known fact. Sure evolution is still a theory but the earth is proven to be far older than 6k years. Even written history goes back farther than that if you take into account Sumerian literature which is older than any biblical texts unless you consider that stories of Gilgamesh in Sumerian closely mirror similar stories about biblical patriarchs. I don't think its
I think you are wrong Feud since I claim direct Apostolic authority and revelation from God. In fact an angel told me to dig in the yard last week and I found a golden tablet that informed me I was the newest Apostle since Elvis and that if I would only eat the moldy bread on my kitchen counter I would be able to speak directly to Jesus herself and she would tell me the path to enlightenment and righteousness. I also found out some interesting things about casseroles and that Saint Peter was a c
[quote] [quote]The funny thing about random number generators is that even though they are random enough for the task set to them they are not truly random at all. That's the definition of a pseudo-random number generator. However, there are some true random number generators. You could for example measure resistor noise in a circuit. To predict its behavior, you would have to know the exact state of the universe, which obviously i
actually, Moses's laws implicitly awknowledge other gods: "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me." It is actually a detriment to understanding the Torah using english. In hebrew the word many english speaking people read as God or He is actually one of many words, one of the most common being Elohim which is plural for goddess/gods. Another is Eheyah sp?
Further, science does not always "work". A friend of mine some years ago was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. Due to the early stage of it, previous patients wiht similar conditions and the resources availible she was told that it would be a quick fix and a full recovery. Four months later she died in the hospital, after two months of agony and torture from both the cancer and the "cure". Science works, until it
Sure in the states I can be sued for pulling someone out of a burning car and injure their neck but I will probably get away with it unless I am a medical professional and actually trained to do so. That makes the law ten times more foolish to me. If you cry out is there a doctor in the house all the doctors run for the door.
Remarks about consciousness and energy are the most intriguing for me in this thread so far. If everything is made of energy than is consciousness a form of energy or perhaps a pattern created from intersecting waves of energy? If so than doesn't that imply a collective consciousness where all intersecting waves of energy are taken as a whole? I am not saying its any particular god I am just saying the evidence scientific or otherwise seems to point to this collectively conscious energy as exist
I can't help but feel you all are talking about the three big ones here. My religion does not advocate proselytizing or damn other faiths or even have the tenant of damnation at all. No hell, no heaven just some abstract concepts of an afterlife and a good deal to say about living a fair and honest life. Religion is often a box people put their spirituality into, sometimes the box is too small and they are scared if they let out it might run away from them. I have to add some things...
I doubt Putin called for a new arms race. That title would go to the Presidant of the United states. Thats what Putin said, you say tomato I say tomato... but it all spells the same thing doesn't it
agriculture, or cleaning, construction, etc. Just wanted to point out that these jobs are the backbone of a good economy. To think of them as lesser jobs that people should strive to escape from doesn't seem wise to me. If we had no construction workers or farmers what would the world be like? Do you only need a contractor to build a house? Do you only need a landowner to feed a country? I also don't think the tax burden issue is really being considered correctly either. If I make 8 billion dol
I hadn't realized Hugo had aligned himself so heavily with Cuba. That is a stupid move really. Fidel is going to die any day now and his brother is a wild card and a lot less charismatic than Fidel who honestly wasn't very charismatic either. In other scary news from the world Putin has declared a new arms race. Cold War part 2. Perhaps I was wrong in some of my other posts, maybe he will declare himself a king and rule for life. I can't say I didn't expect Russia to bulk its military but I hone
I'm pretty sure the brave men and women who fought and died for their country had their reason. But if they fought outside the borders of their state, they participated in an unethical conflict. No offense, but not in the least should we reward such unethical behaviour with an official memorial day. Please, your point has bigger holes in it than the Titanic.... Even after being broken in half and sitting on
Well I am guessing he will make it where there is only state radio and television, really I thought he was already promising to do that. That what extreme socialism is. Government runs it all. I hope he at least puts on a Venezuelan Idol show. Everyone loves bad singing amiright?
So you don't remember something called World War II? You Know... when the USA had to save the world from Nazi facism, We in USA, like to take 1 day of a 365 day year to remember things like that so they don't happen again. We honor our fallen heros of Wars current and past... because they gave their life for the Freedom of our country and probably yours, so have some respect, you can play with your video game tomo
Nah barbaric is not really the term I would use for myself. Cold and overly analytical maybe I don't really know how to quote sections either, guessing its some htmlish tag like blah blah blah replace < with ] for php maybe. Either way I have lots of sympathy for people who really deserve it and haven't forfeited their right to it by being a monster.
Sometimes wars are fought to defend human rights. Besides even though I do believe any conflict could be resolved with diplomacy and compromise the problem is that not everyone wants to sit down and resolve the conflict. There are and always have been those who profit from causing and continueing conflict and those that profit from doing nothing about it. That is not the same as saying all combatants involved have no honor and it is also not the same as saying that all wars fought by the US had
I have never read Mein Kampf but surely who or what ever influenced me to think this way about charisma and power probably did. I feel overcultured and undereducated.
Insomnia Not having medical insurance people who don't bother with dictionaries people who think they are helpless and then ask for help I think I must be old because everyday it seems some other part of me hurts Think that about covers it for now.
I think a lot of you are confusing terrorists and insurgents. Insurgents attack military targets; terrorists attack indiscriminately. I don't think you are correct. I am pretty sure insurgents and terrorists both attack whatever targets they think will get the most attention to their cause. Insurgent movements are not characterized by an unwillingness to attack civilians they are charactarized by their opposition
Meh not old enough to be a hippie but I like trees and tye dye. I think they are pretty. I don't always agree with my and many other governments motives and executions of war but by all things right and good in the world how can you say a soldier following orders is dishonorable? War crimes do take place and for someone to not only dishonor the soldiers that do NOT commit such crimes but also the victims of those crimes by saying that a soldier must justify his government is the most narrow min
Meh its kind of off topic but I cant pass up a chance to talk about the death penalty. I like to use the village example even if it doesn't exactly fit. You live in a village 100 years ago. Someone in your village raped and killed 10 other people in your village. If you ban them from the village you still have to expect them to come back in the night and kill more, perhaps everyone. If you lock them in the local jail they may escape and even if they do not you will have to feed and shelter them
