I would like to add my small contribution. I experienced the problem where the game would crash immidiately upon startup, but my desktop resolution and depth were both more than adequate. After some time of trying to find the cause, I realized that having the TV-out enabled on my Radeon made the game think my monitor was only able to display up to 640x480 resolutions. Disabling TV-out fixed this issue. I don't know if it matters, but my copy of the game is a Gold Edition.
