It has nothing to do with good and evil. The buildings are destroyed when you conquer a planet if you do not have the required tech to build them yourself.

Well based on the game's back story just because you haven't officially met a race in space yet doesn't mean you don't know of their existence. So its not too odd that you would get word of an amazing project through some sort of second hand source. Having them brag about their research is a little weird though.

For me every single time, without fail, its the Krynn. They are always the "Super Race" in any games they are included in. I don't know how or why they are able to do it but it happens every single time. It might be because of the kinds of games I play (larger maps with lots of planets) on the high difficulty settings (obscene or suicidal) happens to be where they tend to shine, I don't know. You need to get your relations to "Close" The best ways to do this are to have a larger military than they do, have lots of trade routes to them, and to just give them stuff for free. Eventually your relations should get there.

Masochistic is where I effectively had to relearn the game before continuing on. Most of the strategies that work before suddenly stop working.
