In my experience, until the trade route is established, your freighter is vunerable to attack. Once the route is set however, the "power of the Privateer" kicks in. If I feel that my "virgin" freighters are in danger, I send an escort to accompany them to their destination. Once the route is set, the GP kicks in and all is good. My first post - hope this helps!
