To increase your economic output, is it better to spam econmic building, keep a smaller population and so a higher tax rate? Or spam farms and morale building, so a higher population but the overall tax rate probably lower?

Ok, I just got the expansion. I played the original game before but this extreme colonization is new to me. I researched the required tech and colonised a toxic world. So far so good. I tried to build a factory but it says the time to completion is "never". Yes, my tech level only enables me to colonize 50% efficient? But if I can't build anything, what is the point? Do I have to wait until I get the other half of the tech before I can build up the planet? This is frustrating for me.
If you have a vast economy, cost shouldn't matter and concentration of irepower can matter. In which case, defense should have the edge as you can throw more onto a ship. Also for a cpital ship, all the damage that it takes won't kill it unless the hp is reduced to zero and a cpital ship as quite a bit of hp. For a fighter the hp is low. That means, a fighter can suffer casualty in a fight where capital ship can walk away from. Cost for cost, offense wins of which there is no
In a recent game, I made a 4-ship, Large hull fleet stacked heavy on defense, and proceeded to waltz through the entire galaxy with it. By the end of the game, these 4 ships had 250 offense/700 defense, had destroyed upwards of 100 enemy ships and had taken a total of 10-20 hp of damage. Aside from a few ships I kept around to make sure no one circled behind me to cause an
I have been thinking. Instead of concentrating even more on the combat area why not focus on more diversity of gameplay? For example, add depth to influence. Right now you just throw up multiple influence starbases but in fact you can explore the mechanics behind the influence. How are you influencing the other races? Do you do business with them? If so, can you reserach into different product lines to sell them your "brand" of products? Can you research into marketing or distribution?
Couple of quick 'very rough' numbers It takes 22+ constructors to fully build a starbases off/def Thats around 22 x 200 MP = 4400 MP total ( about 200 MP for a constructor with lots of engines on it ) I can build a huge hulled ship for around 900 MP usually A fleet of 5 Huges ( logistics 40 ) costs about 4500 MP So the costs are really about equal
