Thank you for that information. It's helpful. I never got hit by pirates once on my fourth game. In fact, I won without ever engaging my opponent AI fleet in a single battle. I just colony crept forward and won. Maybe I'm getting the hang of this.

So I'm on my fourth game. I've lost 2 out of the first 3, but that's okay, I'm known as an idiot in a lot of corners. I'm following the strategy guide I found here and doing better. I don't understand the pirates timer. Pirates have ruined my two losses and I've realized how much cheaper it is to buy them off than it is to build ships to counter them. Anyhow, the timer and the bar doesn't seem to indicate exactly when the pirates are going to choose their

What dictates what gets shot at first in a fleet battle? I'm trying to discern whether it's better to have a mixed fleet, or what. Are tiny ships worth taking (not counting starbase influence) in conjunction with Small, Medium, and Large hulls? The way I have done fleets is to make 2 or 3 medium ships, 1 large ship, and 4 to 6 small ships. In the specific game I'm playing, at Painful difficulty, I'm in the phase of research where Large is as high as I go. Enemy defen

I’ve moved up in difficulty to the "Painful" level, I think it is. I’ve gone to a "huge" galaxy, but not a lot of stars – I like open space, I guess. Anyhow, the land grab phase is just ending, and I find this point in the game the most difficult. I have 3 neighbors who surround me in a corner. One is the semi-aggressive, human-cousins (Toreans?) that I’ve had problems with in past games. I’m playing with abundant resources, and have about six in my sphere of influence, not

I'm not quite sure I know what an "attack" rally point does. I can't seem to find any info on that in the manual. I know what a "fleet" RP is. Not sure Normal does anything (I prefer fleet RPs). And attack, well, I'd be afraid the computer would send out my singal ships into fighting dumb stuff.

Military Starbases are not military force in their area of influence. What they do is 1) defend themselves and 2) enhance starships within their area of influence. Whenever you upgrade a starbase you will see options that affect either the starbase itself, or friendly fleets in the area of influence. Basically, there will be a little starship icon next to enhancements that benefit fleets (these don't benefit the starbase), and others only affect the starbase's base stat line. <br/

Playing on smaller maps helps alleviate this. But I agree that it's true to some extent. Just like I did in the Civ series, if I start a game and my immediate surroundings aren't lending themselves to shoring up the early handicap I face at harder difficulty levels, I restart immediately. To me, that's just the way 4x games are sometimes. Starting at the center can be a disadvantage, too, if you're surrounded by neighbors early. A lot of times I simply have to pick an area that look

To upgrade all ships at one time, when you do your upgrade, look under the picture of the ship on the left. There's a box that says "Upgrade All Ships of This Type". Click that, and they all upgrade (watch the cost though!) I have a related "upgrade" question. Last night I designed a ship type that I wanted to upgrade. I did two different things - I created an "upgrade" of that ship type in the ship design tool, and I also created a brand new design based on the original, bu

What about destabilization. The rulebook says there's a destabilization slider in the same sentence that it talks about the espionage slider, but I can't find any way to destabilize my opponents.

Something is confusing the HECK out of me here. No doubt since I just bought the game (but I have viewed the tutorials). It sounds like you guys are building starbases from nothing. My impression of the rules was that you could only build starbases on resources via a constructor ship. Is that incorrect? (If so, how do you build a starbase in the middle of empty space)

What happens if you trade a trade good? Do you lose its benefit yourself? Is the trade "permanent"?
