I've just started playing GalCiv II, and even though I never played 1, I did play Ascendency, so there's a lot the same. For that mission (which I'm part way through at the moment), I just colonised all the planets before they could, and I'm going for a simple defense with one mil base and four ships while the planets build up until I research planetary invasion, then I'll take theirs and win it.
