I always thought that 20k limit was sort of underhanded. I wasn't even aware of it until I had been playing the game for a time, kept wondering where those dips in the economy graph were coming from. It should show as a corruption and graft penalty in the domestic stats window just like everything else that affects the bottom line. I do think the limit is too sctrict especially for the bigger maps. Though, I don't believe it affects score.&nbs

I'd be willing to give up some RAM for the sake of the colony list. I've not had any trouble with memory utilization in TA so there may be some breathing room there, especially with all memory optimization that's been done. One other thing I'd like to mention; In DA, during a simple battle sequence, you can click on a ship to view its stats. In TA, ship selection is locked out during a battle sequence. Sometimes I li

1) You can build a chain of them to maximize profits. The limitation is 4 per sector, you'll get a message refusing to build if you try to go over that. You need to add the appropriate modules with constructors to make them effective. 2) Military starbases are not a force themselves. They do draw attention and can be used to create a diversion for enemy forces, but they are strictly defensive and have limited ability to withstand attack. They are effe

There's a few basic fixes and features I'd like to see in version 2. I haven't seen these mentioned lately if at all so I'm posting them. When clicking on a stack of ships, all should be selected by default. That way, you can just hit the F key to fleet them. The requirement to select each ship individually can be tedious when dealing with bigger fleets in bigger numbers. In the colony management screen, the available p

The files are unique for the game version so each needs its own mods directory. Typically, you would use the default which is; C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Mods\Default for Dark Avatar and C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Twilight\Mods\Default for Twilight of the Arnor. That way, you can simply check "use default" in the options menu when specifying the path to the mods directory.

Copy the RaceConfig.xml file to a mods directory and edit it with a plain 'ol text editor. Set the number in the ability points section to whatever you like. Then select "use mods" in the options menu and set the path to your mods directory. GC2 will use the new race config file or any other modified file from the data directory contained in that location. There's tons of stuff you can change.

The DRM issue may actually be the demise of the PC game. Spore may just prove to EA that it's not worth it. They might just say the heck with it and quit releasing PC game ports. Some publishers have already done this. They don't have to concern themselves as much with DRM for console ports. Consoles have hardware DRM that's pretty much transparent to the end user. You'll never hear a console user say, "such and such DRM scheme messed up my console." Even so, there are "chips" you can rep

End user license agreements are ridiculous. I really don't understand why software companies are so adamant about including an agreement as part of their installation. I'm no lawyer, but I'd be surprised if anything outside the parameters set by copyright law could be upheld in a lawsuit, assuming it could even come to that. Hehe, like the software police are going to come to my door some day. I just ignore those license agreements and click through them. I do what I want with software I've

You can run GC2 on more than one computer with the same registration. I run it on both my desktop and laptop computer without issue. I'm pretty sure the GC2 EULA allows this so you shouldn't have to uninstall it on your desktop computer first. I think the idea is that you can run the game on all of your personal computers as long as it's for *your* use. That's a really nice thing about the GC2 license and adds value to the product. You dont' see that very often with games.

I use my primary computer mainly for general purpose computing. A computer with a built-in DRM system that allows only "approved" programs to execute would be too limiting. I'd have to move to a platform that does not utilize this kind of copyright protection. I don't use my computer for entertainment media other than games. It's pretty much the only type of software that has given me trouble in the DRM area. I purchase my games legitimately and I absolutely avoid game software th

Thanks, I'll try giving the races a negative espionage value and see if that reduces the activity somewhat. Sounds like that may do the trick. If not, I'll just have to wait until more in-game options are available in the new version.

2 Replies 3,965 Views

Is it possible to modify the espionage system at all? In TA, I seem to get spammed by agents all the time and it really takes the fun out the game for me. I'd like to shut it off, but if I can't do that, I'd like to reduce the number of agents coming my way. Thanks.

I wouldn't have thought some races would not be able to fully upgrade mining starbases. I suppose it makes sense for races that do not have access to the required manufacturing techs, but playing with custom race and the Terran tech tree does provide all of them. Yet, they are not available after perfecting the required techs.

I finally got a some free time to try out Twilight of the Arnor, but I'm having an issue. I'm playing custom race with the Terran tech tree and super hive. I'm having a problem with mining starbases. After I research all the manufacturing techs, all the mining upgrades should be available, right? At least that's how it always was in DA. However, I can only add the first one and then the rest do not appear in the "choose a module to build"

I have an Intel ICH9 southbridge and XP has no problem seeing the SATA disks on installation. Loading disk drivers during installation is typically only needed for RAID or AHCI configurations. I believe most newer boards do not require extra drivers when using the default SATA mode. However, you'll definitely want to load OEM drivers afterwards (i.e. the ones that come on the motherboard disk). Vista is a lot more flexible in that regard because of the newer driver bundle. I do us

The economy score is based on income, not what you're spending so lease payments do not reduce score. The long lease is highly advantageous for big games. You have to be careful not to overwork it too early, but it's well worth it later in the game. Payments become rather insignificant compared to late game incomes and the early rush benefits are huge. In fact, taking advantage of the long lease greatly improved my big game. The primary advantage of the long lease is that it

No. Research, military, and social production rates are not dependant on population. I don't know if this information is in the tutorials or PDF manual, but that's the kind of information you can get pretty easily here. If nothing else, production rates are plainly indicated in the colony manager screen and it's fairly obvious they don't change with population levels.

I'm glad to see Blu-Ray winning the market. I had a feeling it would as soon as I saw Disney promoting it. I have a Lite-on combo drive and I'm very happy with it, good product. I find I'm using my writer less and less. Now I've got eSATA and use a regular hard drive for all my external storage. File sharing is done over my LAN. With flash drives becoming standard, external storage will only get more convenient. Right now, an external hard drive is rather bulky, but backin

Well, these anti-pirates are the pirates because they are stealing from us!!! I bought two big-name games a year or so ago that would not load on my system because the anti-piracy software failed to recognize my CD drive. I had no recourse at all. Once you open the package, it's yours, no return. Soooo, they basically stole $100 from me. Evil bastards! I'd love to see people getting screwed by anti-piracy software filing lawsuits. I don't have the resources to do it so to the guy

I've played all the alignments quite a bit, even good. I mostly play evil for military conquest. However, other alignments can be just as fun. Good is great for diplomatic strategies and neutral is great for influence or tech strategies. I don't really know why some people are so hooked on evil. It *is* great for military conquest, but other alignments are fun to play for other strategies.

I agree with neilo's reply #18. A lot of the reason I'm still here is because of the Metaverse. The Metaverse and the medal system is an important part of the game for many players. Neglecting it would be a disservice.

CraigHB checking in. This should be interesting with the all victory scenario. Hopefully I'll be able to get a game submitted in a timely manner. However you guys want to set up new teams is fine with me. I'm not picky at all. It will be fun to be teamed up with any of you guys.
