I've been playing gigantic with 6 races, max planets and stars. Usually score about 15 to 20 planets right off. Those settings make games long and complicated, 15 years or so. Though I seem to get good scores that way and I like the challenge of managing a lot of resources. Also, your range and scouting ability comes into play a lot more.

Don't really understand why they can't just make your metaverse score the sum of the best 5 scores or something. This degredation and sum of square stuff seems ridiculous. It demotivates me to post my scores.

I don't understand the whole "ship building is hard" thing. I'm not trying to insult the people who have problems with it, I just flat out don't understand. Could someone explain it to me? I got it right on my first try: "Alright, this needs a gun and an armor and a life support. Now, how many engines can I fit on this baby..." The problem for me wit

In my case, the selector only affects intelligence level for enabled races. If the race is disabled, the intelligence stays where it was last set. If all races are enabled and both randomize boxes are unchecked, then the difficulty selector adjusts intelligence across the board as expected. My only complaint is that intelligence levels for enabled races are not remembered. When starting a new game, they always default to the difficulty setting. I normally don't set all the races t

Yea, you'll want good memory. Obviously, you'll have problems speeding up the FSB if the memory can't handle it. Use stock memory timings because a faster FSB will increase memory bandwidth much more than faster memory timings. As far as cooling goes, the newer 90nm Athlons are very cool running processors (Venice, San Diego, etc). All you need is a good fan on the stock cooler or an after-market cooler with a good fan. Water cooling and other extravagant cooling methods are only necessary

I don't have any web sites for you but, Athlons overclock nicely. I have a 3700+ I'm running at 2.5 GHz (stock speed of 2.2 GHZ). In my case, all I did was run up the FSB from 200 MHz to 225 MHz. That speeds up the memory as well as the processor. I can go as high as 250 MHz and maintain stability. The video card I don't overclock myself. I use an eVGA 7900 GT Signature Series card which is factory overclocked. And, it's way overclocked, stock speed is 450 MHz core and the eVGA card runs

Yea, hehe, I hear you. GalCiv2 is my first 4x game. Didn't know what to make of it at first, but I quickly got sucked into the depth of it. Totally, the opposite of the mindless games I'd been playing. Anyway, it takes a few games to figure out what the hell you're doing. One thing that got me was the whole approval thing. Took me a game or two to figure out you have to jocky the tax rate. Also, when the population gets too high, it's very hard to keep them happy. I don't build more than

I joined Kat Lords. Hope that's good. I'm a new player, just posted my 2nd win. Next game will be "tough" difficulty, gigantic universe, and conquest victory. Hoping to see a good score off that. - Craig

Relatively new player here. I was wondering about the ranking system. I've posted 2 scores and it simply summed them. Looks to me like it just adds a set of best scores. Where does division come into play?

I have a question about trade goods. If you build a trade good like diplomatic translators or micro repair bots, you get a bonus in some particular area. Those items are also available to trade to other civs. My question is this, if you trade one of these items to another civ, do they get that bonus, do you lose some of yours? If you buy a trade good from another civ, do you get some or all of that bonus? Can't seem to find any info on this anywhere.

I'm still relatively inexperienced, but FWIW, I've had several conquest wins so far. I run the planets in concert. I jockey factories and research centers around as I need them. I usually start with an emphasis on factories. Once my planets are fully developed, I upgrade all but a couple factories per planet to research centers and blow through the tech tree. Then I upgrade the research centers back to factories for military production and the conquest win. I also jockey the spending distri

Just wanted to point out, the copy protection issue only applies to PC versions which account for a minority percentage of sales. Console versions comprise the market majority. Even if all us PC gamers boycott draconian copy protection systems (i.e. StarForce), we may not have a significant impact. My main concern is that I don't want low level drivers installed on my system that can interfere with the operation of my DVD drive. As far as Steam copy protection, I use a strict firewall that

I wouldn't have a problem if there was no edge scrolling at all. In fact, I turned it off from the options menu because I found it annoying. I click and drag on the main view. Sometimes I use the mini-map either with a left click or left click and drag. Sometimes I set courses with a right click on the mini-map. I use the planet/ship list a lot to get around. Based on what I've read in the forums here,I get the impression this is how most people navigate the game. It's understandable tha

Game is solid for me. 1.2 is good. It has only crashed on me once and that was when a Windows popup activated, not the game's fault. Pretty rare when a 3D mode application can deal with switching back and forth from 2D. Wouldn't expect GC2 to be able to do that. It's really too bad that PC games are so hard to deal with from a development standpoint. Problem with PC's is so many hardware and OS variables. Hope that doesn't dissuade developers from making PC games in the future.

1.2 update works well for me. Pleased with it. Would like to request some additional control options. Love the game, but find playing a bit tedious when I get toward the end and have a lot of ships/planets out and about. 1.2 made some improvements, but would like to request additional options to make playing easier toward the end of a game. I'll look for an appropriate place to make feature requests. Thanks and keep those updates/improvements coming. Look forward to seeing the g

Oh, BTW, I also have had my share of woes with StarForce copy protection. I do not purchase StarForce protected games anymore. I also have a problem with Valve/Steam (HL2, Counterstrike). Turns out Steam requires you to connect and authorize everytime you launch the game. That's a problem for me so I no longer purchase Steam protected games either. I tolerate SecuROM and SafeDisk, they're not so bad, but I do use no-CD cracks on those. Basicly, I won't buy a game if I *have* to insert a di

Exactly!!! I've never played a 4x game before and didn't have much interest in that type of gaming. I read about Stardock's philosophy on emphasizing customer service and it so inspired me that I want down to my local Walmart and bought a copy. That's something I never do. I usually buy my games used. I'm pleased I bought this game. I'm thouroghly enjoying it and it's a great change of pace from the popular titles I've been playing. Thanks Stardock! <img src="http://images.stardock.com/g

Problem with the ship editor is there's very little documentation on it. I think the game is a bit lacking in that department. It needs good documentation and a built-in help system because it's a pretty complicated game, at least compared to other genres (like popular FPS games). But, I think I got a handle on it now. So far I've scored one influence victory, one alliance victory, and one military victory. For the military victory, I actually had quite a bit of fun building and using a k

I'm new to the game and I think I have a pretty good handle on everything except combat. I've been using stock ships to build with, but figured I better get into custom ships for combat. I got lost at the ship editor. There doesn't appear to be any specification detail for the stock ships. I was hoping to use those as a baseline. I don't understand how the editor works or how to build ships that perform well. I can find no documentation on combat tactics. Anyone have any help to offer.<b

I've never played a 4x game before. I decided to give this one a try because I read good things about Stardocks's philosophy on copyright protection. Aside from that, reviews said it's a really good game. I almost never buy games retail (I buy them used on eBay), but I wanted to support Stardock's sales figures so I bought a copy at Walmart. Man I'm impressed with this game. It has a steep learning curve, but once you get past it, it's really fun to play. It reminds me of the old
