In case it has not been mentioned before, I'd like to add an idea to be considered. In times of war, merchant shipping often finds itself in the gunsights. In GalCiv2, I have tried to build the galactic privateer project as often as possible. Even then my shipping has been attacked. To me it would make sense to be able to send convoys of escorted freighters instead of one lone freighter at a time. I envision gathering a fleet of ships and sending them to the intended trade destination. Once

I used the Q-ship concept to great effect a few times. Most of the time they aren't worth the cost to put defenses on compared to the total trade revenue they bring. The cost of an armed and armored freighter is far higher than a soft one, and you still get one hit point. I only use them on games where I am bringing in a lot of trade revenue and the AI managed to build a Galactic Privateer first. Oddly enough, I've had freight attacked even when I did have the Galactic Privateer. Where the armed

Several of my savegames have had an odd thing happen over the last week. After loading a savegame, several but not all of my ships that were in space had somehow aquired orders to fly to the other end of the galaxy, all converging on one point. It has happened several times in several different games. Normally I don't have that many ships out, but the most recent savegame was right in middle of a huge war. The effect is not pleasant. I have yet to return to that game because I dread all the clic

I have no idea how a society could function when the government is sponging 80% of its subject's earnings. I sure as heck would not want to go to work just so I could take 20 cents home and give 80 to the man. 80% taxes is beyond exhorbitant.

Since this event doesn't happen in every game I decided to take matters into my own hands. I added in a new type of hyperwarp drive by copy and paste in the xml files. I just made it a bigger, faster, more expensive variety of hyperwarp III via cut n' paste. I even had it as neutral only for awhile until the combination of neutrality learning centers and the new drive type made the game unbalanced. I then removed the alignment tag. All the programming I know consists of ctrl + c, ctr

Mr. Lucky : In the overall, I agree with your analysis. Although Weber seems to layer in a lot of subtlety. The purges of the PNS officer corps reeked of Stalin's USSR prior to operation Barbarossa. Much like the opening phases of the Manticoran-Havenite war, the combination of paralzyed military leadership along with a supreme intelligence and counterintelligence coup de grace resulted in the larger combatant sustaining tremendous losses in men and material (not to mention territory

That sounds spot on Mr. Lucky. Good analysis. Edit: In that light, would that make Grayson analagous to the USA?

To me the Peeps seem to be an agglomeration of modern day America, Stalinist Russia, and Nazi Germany. OTOH the Manties come across as being a blend of 19th century and modern day UK maybe a splash of Kiwi and Aussie for flavor. Where that places them on the handy dandy political pigeon hole meter, I have no idea but it sure makes for an interesting backdrop.

Here's a few 3d models I found just googling around Link Link Link I always thought the honorverse ships to look elegantly naval. No funny wings, rings, big towers, or bright colors...a naval vessel.

A recent game in a gigantic galaxy had an event pop up which introduced something called ultradrive or something similar. It had the effect of doubling the speed of all ships. What an awesome event!!! It definately sped the game up. I wonder this ultradrive could be made into a tech that can be researched. A tech that doubles your speed. Perhaps it would have to be just a new engine type. *sounds of gears turning*

Sweet!!! I'm right smack in the middle of Echoes of Honor right now. Love those books. It seems to me that with some creativity, this game could be an ideal basis for a mod of the Honorverse. I think there may already be some 3d models of some of the ships already done. Nothing would be sweeter than watching the wall of battle clash! Edit: I did try my hand at making Q-ships not to long ago. It was a gigantic galaxy with 6 nations. Myself and the Altarians at the

Have you read this board? 'most people' are fully aware of the power of speed and sensors and how the AI doesn't have a clue about that. I think the original poster's point wasn't that he doesn't value speed (everyone does), but that by the time he gets that +1 bonus, he already has super high speeds. No offense was intended.<

ships packed with nothing but offensive power are fine so long as they hold a numerical advantage and strike first. Otherwise the casualties will add up and take em out of action. That's assuming the economic and industrial clout to maintain that type of a war effort. Packing on firepower at the expense of all else is a common mistake in new, small, or developing navies.

Speed is more important than most people understand. Being able to choose the time and place of an engagement or whether there will even be an engagement is more important than any shield or missile. I can't count how many enemy fleets I've suckered and bagged because the AI just doesn't value certain tactical advantages. I never waste money and resources on "defender" ships like the AI does. Nothing is more useless. They can't be used for anything other than cannon fodder. Cannon fodder is not

Wings on a starship look odd anyway. =P It's a bit like the movies that always show starships with roaring engines, etc. On a more serious note, I have run into a few hulls that have some very strange hardpoint issues. One of the Yor large hulls has some hardpoints that warp components elsewhere on the ship when you try and place something on them. One of the Terran tiny hulls has hardpoints that are completely asymetrical. This wouldn't be much of an issue, if the hulls themselves d

When playing as good, using the defenses they have early on will help a lot. When playing anyting but good, the best thing to do is to grab as many military resources as possible as early as possible and gaurd them like your life depends on it. They boost your firepower and defense considerably as your industrial tech grows. Put a military starbase and a picket near each one at the very least. They are that valuable!

I use farms when I need to build up a tax base, or when I'm creating what I call a "farmy". It's easier with farm bonus tiles. You put a farm on a bonus tile, then build a bunch of whatever level entertainment facility you're using. Be sure to include a financial building to increase your taxes!!! Put enough factories on the planet to be able to at least build transports in decent time. Then let the pop grow until your approval starts to fall. Fill up the transports that you hopefully have stock

A star that would give off a visible spectrum of green light would be a pulsar according to stuff I've read. Check out www.sciencedaily.com . The sheer mass of radiation emanating from such stars all but precludes any life, or liquid water from existing in that system. Haven't done enough legwork to know about a purple star.

The hardpoints on the Tinashi took some time to get used to, but I think that the way they enable the model to retain its clean lines is well worth the extra time it takes to place the components. I only wish the battlecrab were the same way. I really enjoy that model. Also, any plans on doing some vorlon ships? Edit: after fooling around with kryo's hull mod I figured a way to not sully the crab's exterior. I installed the crab as jewelry. In the ship editor I place

I won't presume to know what is and isn't simple and easy to be done , so I'll just make my suggestion and let the powers that be decide. My issue is with the combat viewer. I find it a tad bit...repetitive...to have to fumble through moving the free camera around in order to re-align it to my preferred angle at every battle. This means I have to pause the replay and correct the viewpoint so that I'm not staring off into space (punny, haha). If it could be made to stay put relative to

I simply edited the xml and made the subspace annihilator myself via cut n paste, just so I'd lose that nagging feeling whenever it comes up in the tech tree. It stood to reason that it would look very similar to the blaster, just do more damage and maybe have a higher sizemod and/or base size, so that's exactly what I did. The one I'm playing with right now does 10 dmg and weighs 8 with a sizemod of 3. I bumped the blaster up to do 9 points of dmg while weighing in at 7 with a sizemod of 4. I a

The nano ripper is not ethically aligned. It is available to use after Singularity Driver IV is researced. The nano ripper is bugged in 1.1. The weight, cost, and damage values make it cost a LOT more, weigh a LOT more, and do the same damage as the weapon before it. A damage value of 7 seems to me as being a better choice for the nano ripper than 5.
