This "age of strife" began when the moronic humans gave us hyperdrive. Imagine, an entire universe of meatbags, ready to be collected! Yes, improved espionage would be nice. For example, you could set your agents to steal enemy designs, and see what they are up to.

During my first game I wondered myself: "Hey, where the &^$* are the carriers?!" During my second game as I expanded into the tech tree more, I was supremly dissapointed. To compensate, I get ultra logistics ASAP, create 'fighters' of my own, (usually one light figter with a tiny hull and a heavier fighter with small hull) and sprinkle 'squadrons' of 'fighters' throughout my fleets,but I usually only have one or two designs. The more advanced governments allow for better commerce and better research, but the people get a better say in the governement, and so approval is MUCH harder to keep up, which is shown at election time once a year. If you have less than 51% of the popular approval, you'll lose the election to another party, and lose all your bonuses. In my rather limited field of expirience, I often find that if I make a minor achievment (such as getting laser MkIV) it's not worth the time and money upgrade everything, or if the weapon/defense in question won't make a difference. but I DO make a new design of the same ship, but with the new weapons or armor, and classify it as MkII or whatever, but I don't upgrade all my ships right away, unless I am at war and need that new weapon on the front line ASAP. You tend to get the default ships fairly slowly, so I suggest try to design your own. Also, military is based on how many ships and stuff you have, so have planets WITH starports (you need a starport) build stuff.
