Yeah I was going to be out of town for a week and decieded to load GC2 on my old Toshiba laptop with the GeForce4 440 Go card. No way to upgrade the card. There is a site http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ That has forums and a lot of help on drivers. I was able to update to version 81.94 from there. It works but some things just don't work like the ship textures. Have to turn those off.

New bump
What I did was create a basic hull design with all the goodies. Used it through a game and did modificatons as I went. Once I finally had a base hull design I liked, I removed all engines, sensors, weapons, defences, etc so that all that was left was the base hull with jewelry. These were labled BASIC(personal hull name type). Then once that particular base hull becomes available, you get your hull design to build with.
Thanks for the info. Just upgraded my 4 year old machine with a new vid card (Visiontek X1950 pro AGP) and a new monitor (Gateway 24" 1920x1200) So far I have been able to push things up quite a bit. The rest of the machine was cutting edge when new and still rock solid after 4 years. Other games have been pushing the graphics up to the edge with very little problems.
Just thought it would be a good time to give this a bump for new folks.
Just did a check for updates for Gal Civ 2 and Dark Avatar and there was something new, Heightmaps. Took quite a while to d/l so I suspect it was rather large file. Problem is there is no info on what it really is or how to use it.
The worst form of copy protection I have run into was one that was used on a recent first person shooter from Sierra. They had some code in the game that looked to see if you had ever had a disk emulator program on your machine. (Alchohol) It looked at several things and even if you had uninstalled the emulation program there were still enough telltales left that it prevented FEAR from running. I have had games that wouldn't work with the emulator, but that was the first that the company had s
Aww gee. And I just finally got all my e-mail address mess straightened out so I could d/l the latest patches and DA. Missed the stuff prior to 1.50x.072.
Verrry carefully. (couldn't resist)
Dude while you have some good points. (The ones I read before getting lost in the run on paragraph) And while you might have all that experience, you won't really get your point across if you don't learn to break it up a bit. It is a royal pain in the (south end) to read, and doesn't add credibility to your points.
It's broke Jim! (er Frogboy)
Geez children. OK the function is now broke. Tell them and ask them to fix it. and by the way (for those that NEED this) Quit bickering. (I never knew that there were any "auto" functions)
Hmm not sure but this might explain why I ended up with a constant cash drain on a game that I owned 5 planets on. I could do nothing to get the cash flow to go positive. This even though I had plenty of factories. Finally just had to kill that game. Still have the saves but that is probably worthless what with 40+k in the hole. It acted like I had no production, or at least quite a bit less than I should have had. It seems like this happens after obtaining a number of planets. Then the
I think what the Zerogman was saying is that he had all that set already and that his large hull was full and going. THEN he captured the AI planet with the Hyperion Shrinker and his existing hulls, allready set, CHANGED for the worse. Sounds like a bug to me.
I ran into something weird last night. Small map campaign. 3 races something like 8 useable planets I believe. I pushed things and colonized 4 of the planets. For some reason my costs ran me into the ground. Had just 3 ships. started with building 1 or 2 factories and then a starport. I found that I had to keep increasing my taxation and reducing my industry. Literally had taxation maxed out and every thing else at 0. My economy at best was such that with costs my balance was -27 and go
Milkshape is a fairly decent one. It is cheap ($20) and it is supported. It was one of those I used to start out with. The site is here: Link Edit: I don't think that it supports the X file format currently, but it does export to a number of formats and who is to say that it couldn't eventually have a format for use with GalCiv2
Alas my DVD set is up in Kansas City with my brother. Also don't forget, there are the sub races that could show up too. I guess I will have to rattle his cage on the 4th to get them back.
Spleeze! Have you ever been to the Starfleet Command forums? That game was easy to build ships for. Many folks built many ships for it. I even built a few. The forum for the models is Link This might give you some ideas for what can be done. I personally built one of the old FASA designs a Romulan Nova Z1 that was quite involved and it only had about 3600 polys. The trick is that the detail is done with tex
For that matter why are there no RED stars?
Another item having to do with the new "ships firing at the same time" change. I have noticed on several occasions where the enemy ship seems to get an "extra" last shot. By watching and counting the shots it should be my ship shoots and then the enemy ship shoots, THEN ships should blow up. I have seen on several occasions where my ship shoots the enemy ship shoots, and then shoots again before blowing up. Note my ship only shot 1 time. The enemy ship shot 2 separate times AFTER my shot.<
EDIT: I "Fixed/Hacked" my exe file by changeing the ship folder to "My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships" instead of "My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Metaverse\ships" and I dont get the no jewlery problem anymore (so far anyway) and my ships now save to "GalCiv2\ships" instead of "GalCiv2\Metaverse\ships" I tried that but found 1
My problems with the shipdesigner only occur with a newly created upgrade. Had the "jewelry disappeared" happen once. I then loaded an earlier saved game and the Jewelry was back. I then reloaded the last save and the jewelry stayed. I now have noticed that if I create a new upgrade and a ship is not built before I quit the game that new upgrade design will no longer show up in the build menu. It isn't that there are no techs missing, just the new upgrade design doesn't show up.
Actually the nick should probably go in the name part of the file name like these: Mod-Ship-KryosHullSystemMod.zip Mod-Ship-KryosHullSystemMod-14b.zip This mainly because they are Mods first and ships second. There could be several other mods of this type by other folks and with the nickname later it will still follow with the same grouping.
I have noticed a trend in the Library of files for the file names being ambiguous or too generic. To be honest some are very well named or at least partially descriptive, but file names like ships2.zip are worthless when trying to figure out what it is at a later time. As all the computers that will run this game support long file names, why not take advantage of that and make the files somewhat descriptive. This is something that can grow and evolve as time goes on, but there has to be a sta
I'm working on a post for a new thread on file naming conventions. I've noticed that many of the files in the Library are too generic. When folks download them it is almost impossible to figure out without a lot of work what is what. I will post a link to the thread once I have worked out some naming conventions for ship and mod files.
