I had the same problem running the game on my widescreen 1280x720 (720p LCD TV) display. I got an error message saying the game wouldn't support a lower res than 1024x768 and then total blackness. Changing the prefs.ini file fixed it, even though I still get the error message before the opening video starts. This thread helped me figure out the problem, thanks guys!
