I figured it was something like that. Thanks for your quick response.

The next day it started up fine. And again even on the same day. Yesterday the same thing. Today? Doesn't start up at all. Same problem as before. Then there's the problem with following the advice here. My emails get bumped back to me. I've sent two, both with the pertinent information as provided, one from my primary email address, the other from my yahoo address. A day after sending each reported back I got them bumped back with a message saying the original message couldn't
Will do. Thanks so much for your help!
No mods and I haven't altered a thing. The computer runs fine with other games. The only thing I can think of is that I have an overzealous tune-up program that runs antivirus/spyware/old files cleaning/defrag every so often that may have zapped some data files, though I didn't notice anything of the sort in the logs I've looked at.
Okay, I restarted and this time it won't work at all even the first time, though it does at least try to start loading, leaving me with a debug file, posted here for your delight: Debug Message: Version v1.30A last updated on: Sat Sep 9 01:25:47 2006 Debug Message: GalCiv2 is activated. Debug Message: Checking DX Version. Debug Message: *********DXDiag info follows.********* System Info Time: 9/10/2006, 12:26:02 DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
This is a weird one. I'm able to start up Gal Civ II, play it fine, good times and whatnot. But, if I close the game and try to play it later it won't start at all. I get the start splash screen, click "play game", then I get the Windows "Galactic Civilizations has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I get this as many times as I click it. But, if I restart, I get my one time fun playing again. I have it installed on an external
That's it. If multi-player is added then I'm going to go outside and, um, sit under a tree and read or something. Maybe I might even have an actual conversation with my friends about something important in life. That'll teach Stardock not to even think about adding multi-player. The threats go both ways here.
The cap is 44, by the by.
I had the same problem, as did a couple other people. I think this may have been fixed in 1.2
My 44 tile non-home planet covered in neutrality research centers makes me think it's worth it. Each planet adds tiles when you conquer or colonize. For example you attack a 12 tile planet. When you occupy it instantly becomes a 16 tile or thereabouts.
Also, 512mb of RAM I've found to be not enough on some machines I've looked at. I worked on a 400mb machine that was having increasing problems, and sometimes quite serious ones the find folks at Dell blamed on the motherboard. Doubling the memory, however, and cleaning up how everything was running made it all better. Not a problem since. Dell packs in a lot of stuff on their computers so I would suggest going in and cleaning up background programs, get rid of any of the crap Dell
More RAM makes manifold problems go away, like magic. As one who works with a lot of older computers I've seen it clear up significantly problems which have at first made people want to toss their computer. XP itself really doesn't work well with that little RAM I have found. Upgrading to SP2 might even make things worse with this same amount of memory. Not all laptops can expand too much, but if you can find a way to double your memory, look at newegg.com for good prices, you'll
I think that's irony more than hypocrisy.
Two 44s. Of course, I'm using the top planet quality bonus with my custom race. But still. One is all research, one is all factories.
It seems to me that if GalCiv2 is this succesful, and a single player only expansion pack is also succesful other game companies might sit up and take notice, pulling the gaming world back from the brink of its multiplayer ghetto. Stardock did not just make an amazing game, they struck a major blow for the side of right and goodness in a war which seemed all but lost.
It definitely improves all planets. Which is why in my present gigantic map game and a nice bonus, I have two lovely 44 tile planets to play with.
No, it was a fresh game I believe.
Alas. It seems that nary any help shall come. Forever my heart will be disappointed when it should be exulting instead upon the announcement of a favorable random event.
My game crashes to desktop the moment there I am told I find the "corvette" ships on one of my planets. I get the announcement, click okay, and the game shuts off. This is the second or third time this has happened. Everything else is running peachy with not a problem. I'm updated to the most recent version. Here's my debug.err file: Debug Message: Version v1.11 last updated on: Mon May 8 11:15:04 2006 Debug Message: Could not find a TGN Serial No. Debug Message: *******
Very true. One of the things I noticed, that might help future releases, was that the stardock downloader had downloading beta versions as default. Methinks it would make for less complaining if folks had to specifically choose downloading betas, rather than specifically choose not to.
Most people have gotten far past the point of constant crashing. When I got the game there was one thing that caused a crash, a bug in building too many starbases, but it was fixed quite quickly and I've had absolutely no problems with crashing at all. My system is definitely not high level. P4 2.0Ghz, 1gb RAM, Geforce fx5200 256mb. However, I do keep my computer clean and updated. I limit what runs in the background, regularly update my drivers and whatnot, and otherwise tr
Also if you get more than 500 in debt. Your economy shuts everything down to get you out of debt.
Ah, search is wonderful. My problem is solved too. Turning it all the way off seems a bit overkill though. I have the exact same video card, and found that I didn't have to turn the anti-aliasing all the way off to get the cut scenes to work. I had it set at 4, now it's at 2. Everything works lovely now. Love that it's not an all or nothing thing. Great game, and great help here.
Having had a bit of crash problems in prior version I have found the recent updates to have fairly ended my crash issues. I'm running a definitely mid-low level machine, but I tend to run it clean with only essential stuff going on in the background, and no real memory hogs at all.
Not only old, they shouldn't be installed. Somehow my built in sound got enabled. Not any longer. However, even after disabling that and only using my sound card, it crashed again. Also it crashed the same way in the first campaign game. Again, when I was trying to build a space station, with three already in the neighborhood. The game gets confused and crashes.
