The most dangerous of battlefield insertions, crash down pods were a disposable method for infantry deployment. Dropped from orbit, the crash down pods had limited guidance, and could not compensate for things like storms or strong winds that could knock them off course. Generally they could land with in a few miles of their intended target. It actually wasn't anti-air defenses that made deployment via crash down pods dangerous, it was the somewhat random nature of the drop. A pod co

Yeah, I thought of that after I wrote it. I'll take some cheese points for it :p When I was experimenting with modding GC I introduced a nano plague invasion option, as well as nano augmented soldiers as another (very expensive) invasion option. I never got the nano soldiers to work right, ideally 1000 of them would be enough to take out 16000+ population planets. The nano plague was better, essentially more destructive Mass Drivers that both increased the offense % and decreased the
Every society has a dark underbelly. Like a tree that is beautiful on the outside, but rotting and dying from the inside out, if the root system could be unearthed the rot would be revealed. Fetid organisms darting this way and that, climbing over each other and in and out of burrows on there way to or from their next meal on the roots, on the carcasses of other fetid organisms, and sometime even on each other. Biting, stinging, feasting on the roots of the tree, slowly choking it to death as
"'A rogue military element?'" "That's what the Torian consulate said." "Bullshit, sir," Jackson said with a scowl on his face. "I hear 'rogue military element' and I think Drengin, not Torian. Since when did they teach their children anything but peace and love? And why would a rogue military element want to capture our colonies instead of launching a coup at the Torian government? Where did they get their equipment? Something stinks about all this." "Agreed, but
Couple minor syntax and spelling points: pretty sure you mean the ship shuddered rather than shuttered and also CAPTAIN is spelt like that rather than Captianonly small points; the story is excellent and one of the best I have read in a while
Doh! You're right, I knew that didn't look right. Thanks for the spelling tip on Captain too--not sure why/how I missed that one. Seems I can't edit my story posts for some reason to fix it, but it's letting me edit th
Niiice...you a Howard Stern fan? And will his soldiers do their duty (doody)?
"Hard to port! Don't let them flank us, Ensign!" It was three against one--and they don't have a chance, Jackson thought. The Leyte Gulf--a Tuscon-class battleship--was extraordinarily nimble for such a large ship. Much of that speed and nimbleness came from the warp ring that streamlined the subspace warp field around the ship. It gave the ship not only much greater straight-line warp speed but much more maneuvering speed as well. That speed came with a price, however: Leyte Gulf had a sma
"TARGET!" "UP!" "FIRE!" The MT80 rocked sharply as the main gun fired with a sharp boom. A just landed crash down pod off in the distance exploded magnificently. The tank sped across the prairies which had become a battlefield, littered with debris, spent ordnance and shattered bodies and vehicles. The crash down pods were still coming in rapidly, it was all the crew could do to keep up with targets. "Shuttle, 500 meters, coming in fast!" "Corpora
So far this is an amalgamation of a few games I've played. I had this one game where the Torians were surprisingly aggressive, I'm not sure how or why it happened but there was probably an entire year of peace then the Torians just got something up their backside and decided to go aggressive. I've just started getting back into GalCiv and decided I need a creative writing outlet as well. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Shenanigans. There are very few people in the world who will pay for something they've already got for free.
Not entirely accurate. Years ago when the whole Napster thing was in the news about music file sharing, there was a study done that showed music sales went UP since the whole Napster thing. Interviews showed that people were making more purchase of full albums after being able to sample a few songs on Napster.
It was a beautiful day: sunny and warm without being swelteringly hot, a few clouds in the spring sky with a gentle breeze. "A perfect day for some yardwork," Aleksander Lashenko said to himself. Yardwork indeed, he was planting a fresh patch of grass after the installation of a new septic system had torn up part of the yard. He took a moment to gaze into the sky with satisfaction when he saw what looked like a daytime meteor shower. "Crash down pods!" he said breathless
Thanks Kryo. I didn't realize that once you start a game the ship data is static. I was making these changes and confused because I didn't see any of them...but it did work, I had to start a new game for the change to take effect. Thanks again.
This is an old post but could you give some detailed instructions so I have a better idea what to do?
Last week I formatted my HD and re-installed my OS, etc. Got the newest version of DL/DA from SDC, and went to play a game and...all the ships are white. Just white. I've got beautiful planets and stars, but plain white ships. Note that before the newest updates I didn't have gfx issues. debug.err: Debug Message: Version v1.61 Dark Avatar last updated on: Wed Jun 13 14:10:36 2007 Debug Message: Checking DX Version. A stupid thought: what would I do in RL if taxes would be anywhere *near* 79%? Ugh! Yeah...I hate putting my taxes higher than 51%, game or not.
But they make great little starbase destroyers! Nothing like an 'Eclectic'-class combat constructor. Space the enemy resource starbase and deploy your own in the same turn
On the one hand, it's not fun and frustrating. On the other hand, in my last game where it happened nobody got to run away from my Lucky Ranger. On the other hand, it's unbalancing as it makes engine techs completely useless. And on the other hand.. I seem to have four hands. Making the engine techs useless isn't bad. Of course, it does handicap the AI a bit, becuase I'm sure they'll all keep researching it. Of course, if you get Hyperwarp
Mine is a bit different. When I build a ship, it's moves are 4/3 (even with...Warp III+ engines, should be around 6pc/turn). After the first turn, it goes to 6/6 as it should. I think it is a problem with my mod, but I won't know until I try another game from what I understand of the way mods work with the game.
I didn't even realize until now that miniaturization could advance far enough to put the "cargo" type bits in a Tiny hull. Which seems more than a little unrealistic to me, but does open some interesting possibilities. (Personally, I'd probably just stipulate that Transport, Trade, Constructor, etc. can *only* go on a Cargo or Large+ hull.) I thought it was kind of cheesy myself at first, but that is the way the game and the combat system is design
I've got a minor one. In the combat viewer, it'd be nice to see "Above [Planet]" or "Sector [Sector]". That would help at times to know what's going on. Due to my system I keep the map zoomed out and I don't have the camera scroll to where things are happening because it lowers the processor load on the system, as such, sometimes I end up hunting for where a battle just took place on the next turn. Having a location appear in the combat viewer would be nice <img src="http://images.stardock.c
I haven't heard of Universe at War, but EAW is an abolute spaghetti hell of XML. I think they really didn't want it to be moddable, or threw it in as an after thought. I can't believe that Petroglyph devs actually use those xml files themselves. I've been wondering about the mega events myself, especially because I like the chaos the mega events introduce into the game and I'd like to have a free hand to introduce even more ><img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Smile.g
Yes, the carrier bay would ignore logistics and the hyperspace speed of the embarked ships. That way you'd have actual 'fighters' that would use the carrier as thier primary means of mobility. I think it's a pretty good method, but it really doesn't matter unless the devs agree too At the same time you don't really need 'fighters' unless you create a much more involved combat system from what it
Over the weekend I decided to start playing around in the .xml and creating my own mod. I was reluctant to do this earlier because I was both too busy playing, and also because I have messed with .xml 'moddable' games in the past that were an absolute nightmare to work with. I mean, stuff to modify a single weapon or unit could be spread out over 3 or 4 .xml files and if one of them doesn't jive with the others the mod is ineffective at best. The Empire At War games are--in my opinion--the wo
Ever tried F2? Press the F2 key while on the galaxy map, and a little tool should pop-up that lists all the planets. It's got: Mine, Foriegn, Unowned and All as categories. An icon up at the top of the tool allows you to switch from planets to ships. A very very handy tool, I stumbled onto it by accident. You can play with the sort options as well, sorting by class, population, and probably a dozen other things.
I'll tell you I looked everywhere for where to dump logos, and I just happened to stumble on to it when I was searching for something else. I never thought to look in MyDocs...I guess I'm too old school with looking in the path for the game itself.
