Btw, is it best to stick with 1 branch of the war tree when picking a weapon or should you go for "all of them"?. I tend to stick with one atm, so i get it faster and ready for war. I usually go for bigger hulls and weapons first, then take the fluff later. This really depends on what type of weapons or defences your enemies are researching. Put

That was my guess, but I want to add a question. For micro-repair bots to work, does your ship have to be built at that specific planet? And does it only work when a ship is in orbit of that planet? I often build that trade good, but I don't always pay attention as to whether its working or not.

I get the "never" time limit occasionally, but that's usually when I've got nothing else in the build quie, and the focus is on research or military. If you switch the focus to social, or just wait a turn, the correct amount of turns will appear. Don't know if its a glitch or a part of the design. It caught me off guard once, and since then I just ignore it. If it pops up as "never" the following turn, then you may have problem.

I pretty much make a new custom race every time I start a new game...its more fun than sticking with the same custom race, I find. I've played as Cylons, the Empire, the Terran Empire (evil Star Trek universe), and a couple of other just random ones. My newest is the D.O.O.P. federation, headed by Zapp Brannigan - every decision is made according to "Brannigan's Law"...even tracked down some decent pictures of ol' Zapp and the DOOP logo. I'd put 'em up, but that might violate copyright. Usua

This may have less to do with your military, and more to do with your political stance...what is your government? Where did you spend your research points at the beginning of the game, or which faction did you start with?

Excellent...I was really hoping for a beefing-up of espionage; spying is all well and good, but what about some saboutage? Now my prayers have been answered! I know its still quite early, but do you guys have a vague idea of how large the expansion will be? My internet connection can be pretty grumpy sometimes, and has been known to crap out over large dl's.

I've had one alliance victory so far, but as you progress through the game you'll get random occurences, like the assassination of another faction's leader by an extremist group who then break their alliance with you. I guess it also depends on what level of difficulty you are playing on, and how many ai players.

Reply to Tech stealing in Game Talk

^er, I think you're post would be more appropriate in the tech forums. On track, last game I played I got a random event where one of the minor races stole all the techs from the Torians and wanted to sell them to me for one of my systems. Has anyone else gotten that yet? I ended up just swapping some techs for the few he had to offer, but I was wondering if you get more techs if you offer up a planet/system to him.

Two major, but funny blunders for me: First was when I started the game and started to dabble in designing my own ships. I just assumed that I could take any base hull, add weapons and armor, and voila a killer ship. Needless to say, my heavily armed and armored 1hp cargo fleet got its a$$ handed to it...oops. Second blunder was when I was finally dominating one of my early games. I had the last major enemy (don't remember who) in diplomat

If you wait long enough, you get assassinations of faction heads, and that automatically breaks your alliances...pretty crappy way to get it though. I had wiped out half the other factions, and was allied with the alt's and the tor's when within probably half a dozen rounds, both faction leaders were assassinated, and the replacement leaders blamed my faction and declared war. So I crushed them both...it's lonely at the top.

Create your own custom race, as Modus mentioned. I created the a Snathi-like custom race, with Dark Lord Squeekers as emperor...oh, he was so evil!

I too have been having problems with my games, but I think I've finally gotten the hang of it. For me, I don't rush the colony ships right away. I put them in the quae for building and just let 'em slowly build up. I fast-build an entertainment centre on each planet right away so I can raise the taxes and maintain a high popularity, then next round I fast-build a factory or a star-port. All other constructions I just let build up naturally, and pla

I enjoy the espionage implementation...always put in a little over a long period, and it'll pay off. It is extremely helpful when you need to know what techs you will require to counter an enemy force...and as mentioned, stealing the techs are really satisfying. My last terran game, I won solely through influence and espionage.

Wonderful replies! Thanks a lot everyone; I appreciate the input. My current saved game is proving a little more challenging, as I've set the research speed to regular, upped the map size to large, and put 7 other races into the fray...still at beginner difficulty, but what can I say? I'm an intergalactic wuss.

Heh, I thought I was on the verge of victory against another race. I opened up the diplomacy window, saw "surrender" under my side, clicked on it assuming I was demanding he surrender. Needless to say, when he told me he accepted my surrender, my first reaction was WTF?! ; my second reaction was to burst out laughing when I realized what I had done. Oh well, it was a learning experience. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/

Sorry for the double post, I just realized that my question got a little side-tracked with other questions. So, any help or suggestions on any of the above questions would be much appreciated. I should clarify that I'm not usually doing horrible , just that I think I could be doing a hell of a lot better, with a little guidance in the right direction.

Hello...first let me say that I really enjoy this game; great work and kudos to the devs. Second, its been a while since I played a turn based 4x game (aside from civ 4, which I found a bit of a letdown, but I digress...). Thus, I've been playing mostly beginner-difficulty medium-sized maps (I've only played 3 - 4 games so far, so maybe this post is a little ambitious so early in my galciv career). How does one get to the larger sized ships qui
