Custom ship building is a really big part of the game (at least for me). If custom ship building (jewelry, etc) were to be removed from Multiplayer I would suggest that it should be an option you can turn on and off at game start. There are plenty of other ways to limit time consuming turn sequences - like the standard turn timers.
