some good responses overall guys thx Ive learnt alot about starbases that I didnt know - specially military ones which were the ones I thought werent worth it clearly I was using them wrong thinking of them more as defesive castles that would blaze up on incoming fleets, but they appear to be more support for fleet type structures (from the comments) so Ive changed my strategies for using them - interesting tip about putting ships

Is it just me or does anyone else think space stations are weak as for the building effort they require? I had modified one of my military stations with battlestations2, some mass drivers, some point defence and missile defense, which took like 6 construction ships 1 fleet of medium sized enemy ships turns up and blows it away - i dont think they even lost a ship! <br/

Prodigy, I couldnt agree more, last night I discovered a bug (unsure if it has been fixed, running original game) where I had named several versions of a ship design the same name - this was working fine till I reloaded my game and all the old designs appeared, not just this but when I told my planets to build the latest version with the latest weapons, they reverted to building the original version (with no weapons) so I had fleets of ships

a couple of medium ships - maybe not in the same class as some previous designs but hey I like em
