I like the game except for one part, the land grab. This was my main point of contention with Civ III and I cannot take it with this game. So I figured the best way to do this would be #1. decrease the range bonuses of life support systems, and #2 increase the research time for better life support systems. I keep them around, but I usually play a "good" race. I like it when they are in my influence and I can both tax them and trade with them. Plus they respond to me "requests" for tech very favorably since I defend them from any other race rolling over them. For example in my current game I have been asked for help from the Paulus 3 times against the Aceans and have helped them each time, always taking a border planet or two for myself before declaring peace. So the Paulus give me almost anything
The Blueprint system works great for Hearts of Iron 2, I would vote for that system as it still makes you research the advance. I would also vote for requiring a strong bond between the people who are tech trading/ I.e. Alliance or some kind of technical treaty a la MOO 2.
