Myself I put a starport on probably 75-80% of my worlds. I don't specialize many of my worlds. Most of them are self sustaining. As such, a great deal of them need starports. The only worlds that don't get a starport are those PQ6 and under. Basically anything over PQ6 gets a starport. All of my planets above PQ6 have generally the same layout. About 10% production facilities, 5% farms, 5% happiness, 40% economy, 30% research, and the other 10 usually a mix of eit

Interesting responses. Both sound reasonable. So what does the number before the hull size designation mean? It isn't on all of them, but it is on some of them.

I did multiple searches, but didn't find anything about this. Does anyone know what the reasoning is behind the AI's ship names? Off the top of my head, you'll see something like this: 8-Frigate M3-12 3342 Or something similar. The number before the ship name isn't always there, but the M# - ## part always seems to be there. The last number is just the ship number. My keen observation has concluded so far that the higher the numbers, the more they will hurt

Like I said, I'm no GalCiv pro, the game I'm currently playing is the first time I've ever done well (playing on challenging, large map, 5 civs besides myself). But if economy is your problem, here's some tips I picked up. Don't blow your entire wad of cash at the beginning buying colony ships. Sure, you'll probably pick up the most planets the fastest, but then you have lots of colony maitenance costs, plus you'll probably be building either ships, infrastructure, or both on those

Don't give up man. I am in the same boat as you. I find that quite regularly I lose at most Civ games (galciv, or the civilization series). I'm constantly trying new things, seeking advice from better players, trying to improve my game. Right now I'm in my first really good Galciv game. I'm only ranked 4th overall (out of 6 civs, myself included) but I'm in really good position. I'm the number 1 military power, and number one in population, economy, and production. I'm fi

This is one thing that I found odd. It took me a few battles before I figured out that the attacker ALWAYS attacks first. I think it should be the opposite. The defender should be the one to fire first. It's the attacker who is moving towards the enemy, so it should be the defender who is able to get off the first shot at extreme range, while the enemy closes into effective firing range. As he enters that range, he's hit by the defender's fir

Well, I just finished my first game on a huge galaxy. Took me 4 days of hard work, but it's done. Won an alliance victory in the end, but I could have won a tech, influence, or military victory if I wanted to. I beat the other civs like rented mules. It was only on Normal though, I'll be trying challenging next. I played it the way I layed out above, I specialized every single planet. In the end I had 70 planets. 5 of them were geared to production (2 of them could churn o

Sounds like a good plan, except for the last part. I think you're saying that it doesn't matter if you trade influence techs to the minor races, since they don't have any use for em?... They can trade em to other races though. If you're trying to keep a monopoly on influence techs it's best to not trade em to anyone, even (maybe even ESPECIALLY) the minor races.

In the early game, when you are struggling to fit as much on your ships as possible, I go purely offense. But in the middle to late game, when you have room to play around with your ships a little, offense and defense are very valuable when used together. As an example, I'm playing a game right now. In the mid game, I was pressing the Arceans very hard in the influence department. Eventually they had had enough and declared war on me. Though my military rating was almost do

I've come from Civ4. A great game. But I've always wanted a "Civ4 in space" kind of game. Galactic Civilizations II is definately that game. I'm having a blast. However, I'm looking for some advice on my strategies. I thought I could directly transfer my Civ4 strategies into GC2. It didn't work well at first, but I'm starting to improve. The resources in the two games are different. In GC2, as far as I can the 3 resources are production (both social an
