ok, I found it. It was an overlay display that was defaulted on with my updated video drivers. sorry about that.

on my laptop there is a framerate counter in the upper right hand corner of the screen. how do i turn it off? I never enabled it, it has always just been there. I have tried every button combination that i could think of.
