I've waited quite a while, but these forums really need to be fixed. In a day and age when many tiny websites have forums that work on a wide range of browsers (the forum templates are available for free) it is unacceptable for a professional company to have forums which are this bad. Specifically, the forums more or less dont work on Firefox or Opera on two different operating systems (KDE linux and WinXP). Opera wont post posts correctly, and wont let me view threads that I have r

Yeah, I pretty much agree with the original poster. I play on the same difficulty level as the poster and have the same problems. The biggest issue is the tech tree one. The computer doesnt build its planets up very well because it jumps up too quickly on the research techs, meaning that it spends forever building research academies or invention matrices instead of building a ton of Xeno Labs and upgrading like any half decent human will. The net result is that they cripple themselves early

They round down for square root calculations, but that doesnt mean that they do for everything. What I suggested was more of an example of something that could go wrong. I assume that the coding isnt sloppy enough so that random number generation is an issue. I have seen things like games with dice where this was a problem (you got too few 1s and 6s), so it was just an immediate example of a reason why testing is needed for the formulae.

Yeah, all this is great in theory, but somebody needs to test it. One question I have is how the random numbers are generated. Lets say that you have a defense rating of 5. Supposedly they determine your defense in any given turn by generating a number between 0 and 5. Its safe to assume that they only do integers because they say that the defense is always rounded down to an integer when they take the square root. Common sense dictates that they would generate an integer and jus

About half of binaries have are separated by less than 7AU. For comparison, Jupiter is at roughly 5 AU while Saturn is at roughly 9 AU. Also, there is a decent population of close binaries, which have separations of less than an AU (they are closer together than the Earth and Sun are). So, the statement about binary stars not really being in the same system is false. There is an interesting article on Space.com from about a year ago about habitable stars around binary stars that su

There is no such thing as something hotter than an O type star. O type stars are as hot as you get. Astronomers also assign (roman numeral) numbers after the star type for subcategories. The higher the number the hotter. So, for O type stars you just keep on getting higher and higher numbers. The star emits most of its light at such and such a color due to its surface temperature. However, it doesnt necessarily appear to be that color to the human eye due to how our eyes work. F

I dont really have a problem with the original post. It has many opinions in it which I believe are not particularily well reasoned, but people are welcome to their own opinion. I agree that people should be encouraged to post such opinions. My problem with precurser is statements like: "The fact is, this is still a beta version game. And I know, despite all of your hard work (not doubting your talent either for a minute) that when you put your head on your pillow at night, you know thi

If you dont understand how even basic algorithms work, then you should be very careful about making inflamatory posts about said subject. Criticisms are fine, but shooting your mouth off when you dont know what you are talking about is a really good way of appearing to be an idiot. In any case, one valuable thing to do is to compare the GC2 AI to the AI in other 4x games. When you do this, you will find that your statements about the AI being in the beta stage are completely false a

Quicksilver did not make up the 4x name. Its been around at least since the original MoO. Also, games like Silent Storm and Fallout are not TBSs in the same sense as GC2, Civ, or MoO. Completely different AIs for the same reason that you can have brilliant chess AIs but cant really have a brilliant Civ4 AI. Comparing GC2 to something like Silent Storm is pointless.

I think that they key point here is that its hard to improve the AI while keeping the turn times reasonable, not that its hard to improve the AI. Yeah, the AI plays like a bad human even at high difficulty levels and makes a ton of mistakes. But, thats really the best you can do. The number of calculations needed to make the AI play like an average human would lead to ridiculously long turn times (I think everybody would rather have reasonable turn times and a bit of cheating than 5

Yeah, there are some serious problems with the AI. Most of the time, it starts sending troop transports if and only if it sees a planet undefended (sometimes there seem to be exceptions to this, but its a solid general trend). This is rather ineffective as it takes the transports so long to get there that htey usually get destroyed easily when they actually show. The deal where they declare war and then do nothing for a couple of
