Try putting 8 points and getting +2 Speed for all your ships. This can make the early colonizing real easy, and it leaves you more room for weapons on your ships since they won't need engines. With a single 2 speed engine, my entire fleet moves at least 6 parsecs a week.

Did you know that you can lose the mission Siege and the campaign continues? To all those who are "giving up on the campaign because of this mission", just skip it and move on. In an effort to build a competant starting strategy, there are many ideas out there but no main resource. Post your early strategies here and we can share what we've learned. For me, here are some tidbits: 1) Research towards universal translator, and eventually trade with the other races.
