I think you will not be disappointed. For a long time, GalCiv 2 was the successor to the space 4X crown after Master of Orion 2, and IMO it still holds its own pretty well against the new crowd of 4X games like Endless Space or Distant Worlds. It's more intricate than Endless Space and it won't cost you your firstborn to see everything it has to offer, unlike Distant Worlds (when a game is 33% off and it STILL costs as much as an A-list game without even looking

Things that wouldn't be massive new features, eh? * More random events. * Speaking of which, I wish random events would continue even after Xeno Ethics. It's silly that it's like "Okay, we're officially Neutral. Woo hoo, now I won't have to weasel out of a random issue ever again!" The events could still happen, but maybe you'd be locked into your alignment's choice (or maybe you could choose differently each time, but have to pay for it). * Have there be two relation

Forgive me if this has already been answered before, but is there any chance of them showing up in a future patch or expansion?

My lover has always enjoyed playing that old Worms World Party game with me. Sometimes she even kicks my ass at it. It's a lot of fun trying to outwit and outgun each other. And yet she has never once complained that there aren't any girl worms, or that all of the team voice sets that you can pick seem to be male. Oh, yeah, and even though it's really cartoonish, the game is full of guns and bazookas and bombs and fire and explosions and exploding animals and other shit that on

Tweaking the pirates down a bit isn't the end of the world, but I wish you'd do something to make the Dread Lords event matter. I want that, too. I'm kinda surprised it wasn't listed - Vinrath and I are hardly the only ones who have complained about this.

Plus, GCII/DA offers two things that I haven't seen before with ANY title. First, no pain in the ass copy protection so that I can play without a CD, and second excellent customer support that's unmatched in my experience. I'm not gonna touch the rest of this debate, but I'll note that the box version of (ironically) Space Empires V lets you play without the CD. ("Excellent customer service that's unmatched" would be a different story, though.)

Well, if you look at the altmeta, you can see that the top 3 of 4 characters show playing suicidal exclusively and winning via military conquest exclusively. Diplo victories just don't give the score to justify the time. I apologize, I probably should've been more specific there. If you read posts by Suicidal players, you'll see they accomplish those military victories by using extreme diplomacy bonuses to manipulate the super-powerful AIs, getting techs, mi

I do play metaverse...but I always thought tech victories were the limpest (probably cause they take so long). The time I played Crippling (as opposed to Tough as usual), I got a tech victory, but didn't score any higher than my political wins at Tough. I might start trying conquest, then. (Which would be quicker than influence, at least.) I think my point is valid, though - it's kinda disappointing that you can win so easily with diplomacy. Someone posted in another thread that high-di

I would like to model a civ after the Eddorians (of Eddore, of course). ...and 50 credits to the person old enough to recognize the reference. The Eddorians would be way overpowered - but you'd still have to worry about the Galactic Patrol.

Humans. Period. For all the strategies that got nerfed in Dark Avatar, the new Super Diplomat ability makes Political Victories EASIER THAN EVER. If you play with a maximum number of other races you can trade techs with, you're all but guaranteed to stay in the lead. Hell, Super Diplomat can even duplicate the Super Organiser ability of the Altarians. In my last game at Tough, I was so popular that when the random assassination event made the Yor declare war on me, four other AI empire

The random events would bother you even more if you were a longtime veteran - most of them have been around since GalCiv 1. If you don't care about being Metaverse-compatible, you can probably mod more events and UP issues in yourself by editing the right XML files. Other people here would know way more about doing this...

Seconded. A UP more similar to the council in Alpha Centauri (where you could propose issues and bribe other players into voting your way) would be great. Right now, it's so random. One race often votes to benefit another, only for THAT race to ruin it by voting for yet someone else. If the AIs (and you) could coordinate, the UP issues would be more effective. The only problem the AC approach would have here is that it would allow high-Diplomacy players (who already have many advantages

This is a good point. There's some stuff about the races on GalCiv's wiki, but not very much in-game...mostly, it comes through in diplomacy comments. Frogboy once remarked that while Master of Orion 2 was in many ways a game about warfare, he wanted GalCiv to focus more on actual civilizations. More in-game information about the beings who are building your civilization would add to immersion there.

No, the ill effects of a tactic only occur if it succeeds. The devs decided that this way was less cheesy than allowing players to just invade with a single soldier and mass drivers to devastate planets at little cost. I've found the population cost to be of little concern next to actually building the transport and paying for the mass drivers (which would still have to be done even if I only sent 1 soldier). Besides, if your enemy has run out of ships to wa

I'm not sure what races you're playing, but consider playing as the Iconians, Korath, or Yor - they start with some of the colonization techs, so there's not as much pressure there. The exotic worlds aren't that big a deal, anyway - until you get the *advanced* colony techs, exotic worlds only have half prodution. Thalans are another good race for people having trouble. Because they can build factories so easily, new colonies can become productive much more quickly than other races. I

I had a bit of a snafu in a beta game, once. The pop-up came up saying that the Dread Lords negotiated peace with such-and-such race, I clicked on it, and lo and behold, I was brought to a dialogue screen with the Dread Lords. I clicked on "Peace Treaty", and told them to give me all of their techs...which they gladly did. Haha, if this doesnt show that Dread Lords Mega Event is broken then I dont know what does. I mean, hasnt th

I had the same problem when the Dread Lords event happened. In the Dread Lords On Parade scenario, they're a threat because they're there from the beginning and have time to build up their scary ships before you can even begin to research transports to invade them with. Hell, I haven't tried that in Dark Avatar yet, but they're probably worse now with the new way weapons work - my old strategy of attacking them with hordes of small, all-weapons ships might not work anymore. With the me

-- Right clicking a tech in technology window should give information what exactly does an improvement give. In example Laser II +1 beam damage, size 15 etc. Good idea, but showing size for components would be problematic. Doesn't component size vary somewhat according to what hull size you're using? -- Ship building window should have similiar buttons for components (newest, old, all) as does the planetary screen for buildin
