I think what AI-bashers aren't getting about this is that the AI isn't a little human they put in the box: It's thinking essentially comes from if/than statements (a vast oversimplification of course, but the jist of it's logical abilities is if-this-than-that.) Moving things around on a map with little more than if/than's to decide who goes where isn't exactly an easy thing to do, at least with good results. The player can determine that he should

Whoo! Battletech! Sorry, I've been a fan for some time. I even bought a bunch of books recently despite no-one to play the actual game with just to read all the stuff again. (The "classic" thing still throws me off though... Makes me feel old.) Signing up! <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Wink.gif" border=0 ALIGN="
Morale: Morale allows a race to operate with a higher tax rate, and thus to have a larger economy... [contd.] Granted morale can be a doozy for larger populations, I once hit the tax threshold in a game with only one or two points in morale, maybe three (at 80%, I believe it was, approval automatically drop
Whew. I thought I was going to have to get a different motherboard! (Replaced it and video card at the same time.) 1) Gforce 6800 Ultra 2) Single Monitor 3) N/A 4) Standard cursor. I haven't used the Wacom Tablet yet - it's what I usually use. I also have only had the issue while in the ship builder, although it only took a few times before I came here, so it might happen elsewhere. It may be related to the size o
This particular claim I find especially annoying because it sounds a lot like the neighbor kid screaming "cheater" because they don't know how to play the game effectively yet. It would be much better for the person to simply ask on a forum and then someone could tell them how it's being done (or read the manual). </TAB
True, Egyptians governed because their leader was the descendant of a God. However, that could lead to some frustrating experiences... Thus "intuition" is not enough, my point exactly. In order to have intuition be the sole basis of a certain aspect it has to be so simple that no-one could realistically assume anything else to be the case. It
For instance, I traditionally come from the camp who play games intuitively. I don't like having every number spelled out. I was, for instance, against letting users see the tech tree. Not even in a manual. There's nothing wrong with having a hidden but intuitive tech tree. The problem different people have different intuition. More complex tech
I'd love it (I still have Alpha Centuri on my computer ). The only problem I could think of is that the populatioin races on planets aren't kept track of as far as I know (it is in AC and some other games), making giving planets back kind of pointless since you can run them more in line with your "master plan" than a different player. That and, if kept mildl
It's called "abundant" for a reason. If you want less habitable planets, don't take the abundant settings. I think he's talking about the abundance compared to previous versions - I've noticed higher-level planets than usual in abundant as well. I've only started one game though, so I can't be sure if it w
Hm. I've always had problems when the game is saved and reloaded - I come back, and a ship has orders to follow some scout or something, often another race's. After the first few times I've found a constructor at the other end of the map, I've just gone through every ship whenever I load a game to check destinations (very irritating in large games). I haven't had it for a bit so it might have been fixed, but I haven't played for a bit either (waitin
If I remember correctly, Luck in Galciv I applied to multiple things, events amongst them. So if the planet is randomly generated when colonized, luck would probably affect it. I think they might be predetermined when the map is generated though. Either that or the savegame includes a random seed. (I *think* I remember colonizing the same planet twice for the same result, at least...)
That's why I got the CD too - I have a 56k (an unreliable one at that), so it took a good day or two to download the game files alone. I decided to wait until the CD for the music, etc. (It arrived a day or two later anyways.) I don't know if you can get the disk after buying and downloading - I'd imagine so, though.
Anyone know if this is coming out today? At the moment, I keep checking SDCentral like... oh every minute. ...I'm so not doing this too... ...nope... ...not at all... Wah! I wan
Turn off caps lock and you can move via the keypad. Num Lock, actually. At least on the PC version.
More to come... Chapter two of a patch log that does almost nothing but add gameply? After only a few weeks? ...wow... just wow... I think I have a new favorite company.
...woah. New editions of games always make me forget about what the original was like, especially if there were a lot of changes. Europa Universallis I & II, Civilization II through IV, Masters of Orion II & III, Hearts of Iron I & II... now this. I didn't realize how different the graphics were though. It's... disorienting. And you forgot the most annoying feature of Galciv I: The map didn't show what you explored, only if you had
The reason I say it should be off limit is two folds: 1. The AI obviously doesn't know its value. Maybe this can somehow be fixed, but it will be insanely complicated, further... 2. The diplomatic model is too simple. For example, if you are demanding its bases for peace or help, the AI should HATE you for it. It
Oh, if anyone's upset about the Terrans building on a farm square: look at the Torian planet. Research Center on a basic farm bonus, marketplace on a basic entertainment bonus. Maybe iffy because of their low morale, but that just means the entertainment bonus is all the more important. (52% approval? A little low for my tastes...)
3. Also, not sure if this made it in 1.1 or not, but the AI should definitely stop giving starbases away for support of war (because starbases are usually their strongest unit/ship), I've had games where the AI would give me 2-3 economic starbases around their homeworld to support a war, not only does this make it prime for me t
Danger..boring..boring.. What? Nonsense! The best part of the game is seeing how it works (says the person with several hex-based wargames and a college textbook on AI ). I prefer the in-game math to be shown myself,
