Thanks for the prompt replys everyone. As far as a virus, etc. Im 99% sure that is not the isssue because as I mentioned this was a clean install of XP and until last night I have loaded only a few basic programs (Office, Photoshop, Norton AV etc.) Furthermore, I have only visited a few select sites (my regular forums, etc) so I would have had no malicous scripts or spyware installed. Well I just purchased Object Desktop and installed Window Blinds, Gadgets and Icon Packager. Now Windows media player no longer works even after downloading and reinstalling. More frightening is that I can no longer access System Restore... so I can't go to a previous restore point.
