...I have found it less confusing if I build ships with a size designator(S,M,L,H)with the name of their primary weapon system followed by their speed attack, defense values. An example: M Photon 7 1206(one of the vessels in my current game) ...I find this particularly useful when updating vessels as new technology becomes available; simply referring to the vessel's name gives me a handy reference for its stats.

...I would suggest that modules increasing the 'size' (hitpoints) of starbases be added for those who like to build these super fortresses. This could actually be made part of the effect of the various marks of Battle Stations rather easily. If it were possible for each category of spacebase weapon to fire at a different target(beam,missile, mass driver, thus making the starbase the equivalent of three ships for combat) it might better simulate the effect of one of these massive installations.

Alliance victories are what spoiled GCI for me as it was Way too easy to win the game in 20 minutes or so. ...Humans Can and Do 'cheat' using the rules in a way no computer AI could. If you want to play the game fairly this is the best AI I have ever seen. It is the only computer game where I have ever suffered defeat/stalemate. If I wanted to, it is still absurdly easy to ramp up your diplomacy ratings and do the same old boring

...Don't know what game you are playing but against the Drengin at advanced levels they are awesome. Put them in the same galaxy as the Korx where they get lots of money and things certainly get interesting.
