The point is that nobody did or WOULD call my bluff... When the computer thinks that I have 3 or 4 times the military that they do, they aren't going to launch what they think is a suicide attack. And all I have to do is monitor the relations screen and see how they feel about me. I just finished a game on Tough, on a Large galaxy with 9 opponents. I usually play as custom with +20 social/military production and +50 research. I also usually go with Industrialist (+20 social/military production). This time, I went with +50 diplomacy, +20 research/economics, and Populist (+20 morale/diplomacy). This meant that I started the game with +70 diplomacy... I won the game EASILY, without ever going to war. Wit

When I started playing I went high tax/low pop, but I found that after the early game my economy would REALLY be lagging. There was definitely a bit of a learning curve involved, but dropping a couple of farms on each planet of any appreciable size (9-10+) let me get the money flowing. It doesn't really matter if that farm takes up a slot that a factory could be on if you don't have your production maxed out. The high-diplomacy AI races kind of screw themselves, though, by not accepting trades. I'm sure we've all seen races like the Terrans turn down trades that would be vastly in their favour just because they have a much higher diplomacy rating than you do... I can't see how it helps them to turn down your offer of Plasma Weapons V for Sensors, for example. </f
