GalCiv is still one of the best. Other than this, I am also hooked on the Paradox games, so if you are looking for a new game to play try some of those from the series Europa Universalis, Victoria etc. Nice stuff.

It would be great if we could have a ship upgrade governor. I hate to go through ships one by one in order to upgrade them. The governor should also be able to scrap ships.
That leaves influence as the only victory condition you disable, or am I missing one?
Influence and ascension (the one with crystals), I think. Maybe I missed some.
q

Iraq use to have the 4th largest Army. So much for the show. The difference between NK and Iraq is the Nuclear threat. The army is just a bunch of guys who are trying not to starve. They have no discipline or competent training, just full bellies (which the rest of the population lacks).
Yeah, Iraq used to have a large army. But that was before the war with Iran, which was devastating for
Um, what was the point of this? I have already agreed with you that all of this is just talk. Also the size of North Korea's army is not necessarily the important thing. Iraq had the fourth largest army in the world during the gulf war, and their troops were either annihilated or surrendered in mass. Would North Korea's be the same way I don't know, but it is a possibility.
I just didn't agree that America could easily take o
Really, why not just offer keyboard and mouse and a controller. Then people can use/buy whatever they like. Works for everything else.
Skip Starcraft, buy Total War or wait for Civ5 instead.
I don't play on suicidal. I usuallly disable all victory conditions other than tech, diplomacy and conquest, mostly for roleplay purposes.
Some RTS games are indeed good, but many of them devolve into being just a fast clicking tournament. RTS games tend to have very little depth. TBS games allow you to use your creativity and imagination when playing the game, while in RTS there is little time for that - too busy clicking. Another thing in TBS games is that there is a more intricate element of evolution of your empire in that the decision to expand in a particular direction or to invest in a particular technology can have far r
I've seen a new minor race turn up near the end of the game, when I had already researched beyond mortality, only to get a message that the race is nearing the technology victory. I think if a minor race pops up mid-game they get a lot of technologies that the older races have already researched.
Don't be fooled, Goa, North Korea has the fifth largest army in the world with more than a million enlisted personnel. About 20% of men aged 17-54 are in the armed forces. An expeditionary force invading North Korea would have great difficulties, not to mention the cost and length of time, and the fact that a lot of the American expeditionary forces are busy in Iraq and Afghanistan. North Korea knows they will not be attacked, but they also know they have no or little chance of winning a war
I am not too happy about starting out with three ships, especially a survey ship. What I used so far is a modification of the ship specifications that makes the survey ship into a new class I called "prototype" that basically makes the ship useless. But what I would really like to see is for the game to start with no ships at all, or at most a scout. This would, at least for me, add to the feeling of immersion in the beginning. Does anyone have an idea how to make scenario rules that make you
After searching for a bit, I found an interesting simulator from a while back. You specify the ship's defense/attack ratings for each of the categories and the HP and it gives you probabilities of victory. After playing a bit, it seems that if the size ratio between the defense and attack is 2:1 it pays to give SOME defense on the ship. So for instance, if you can put 1 attack in 10 size and 1 defense in 5 size, it would be best to have a 2 attack and 2 defense rather than 3 attack and 0 defe
North Korea is just giving lots of rhetoric. What is really going on is that they are preparing themselves for the worst possibility. Documents were recently released following a freedom of information request in the US showing that back in the day Nixon put several nuclear bombers on standby to bomb their military installations. Of course that could have seriously escalated, so Nixon eventually decided to take that option off the table. But should such a threat happen again, North Korea want
You could try Google Docs...
I think that's a good idea. Especially to be able to limit the search to a particular sub-forum, or to specify whether to search through the titles only or the contents of the post as well.
I would give you karma, but I noticed you always have an excuse for not giving karma to other people.
When I build ships I tend to put only the offensive weapons on them. My reasoning is that the defensive technologies tend to be too bulky for the effect and only add to the research cost, when in the meanwhile you could have researched better weapons. However, I have been wondering about whether this is really the best strategy (and to tell the truth, the defensive technologies do look neat in combat). So as the title says, do you put any defense on your ships?
How quickly do you actually build the eyes of the universe?
You have a point about higher difficulties. But on the lower difficulty levels, even if you run the economy in the negative for a while, if you have a propped up economy you can either run it in negative for a longer period of time or have a higher spending for the same amount of time. This will, in the long run, still prop up your research and manufacturing for more than the Technologists or Industrialists would have (on tough or less).
Sorry to bring up an old thread. But maybe instead of my earlier small colony idea, having the game have genetic factories of people or something, rather than actual reproduction, would also work as an explanation of the massive explosion of the population for me. I partly managed to modify the game in this way, by renaming the technologies from fertility acceleration to advanced genetic cloning and the aphrodisiac to genetic profiles (something to provide a higher diversity of genetic codes
You can fix your points 1 and 5. Disable the surrenders to fix one, and increase the tech speed to fix 5. The others you can probably partly fix by modifying the races - making them use a different AI or tweaking the parameters (I think you can do this in game). I am not a great player, but I once got beaten very badly by Thalans who built up their military and conquered every one, one after another. I hoped to research the tech victory before they came for me, negotiated some treatie
Overall you get most out of the Federalists. The reason is that you can use the 20% economic bonus on your entire economy. This affects your production and research. If you pick, say, Technologists, you get a 20% bonus only on research. Plus, because it's a research bonus, you have to pay for half of the cost anyway! Technologists would have to have more than 40% bonus on research to look even barely competitive with the Federalists. The same is true for the resources in the game. Alw
OK, but I am not bothered by the scale of the planets. I mean just look how big the ships look. I see that as a representation of the actual ships/planets/whatever currently in the sector in question. So I really don't mind the planets being too big or too small. I don't think this has anything to do with realism just with accurate representation (which isn't necessary for a realistic game). The game mechanics, though, are a totally different story. They could be made realistic and not hamper
But you CAN make it realistic and still have the game have the same (or even more) amount of fun. The idea is that the colonies are small (population wise) and are there for exploitation of resources which in turn bring prices down at home and allow you to build more stuff in less amount of time. The only way to have more than one planet with loads of people would be to occupy another race, in which case, incidentally, the prices would also go up because you are now shipping same resources to
