Let the Space Shark die and be forgotten

I saw a post from Technician on another thread saying that he hopes the Space Shark doesn't come back. I totally agree. I always thought that was very cheesy. Please let the Space Shark become something of distant legend (ie: do not include in GC2).

If there MUST be space monsters in GC2, maybe some brainstorming with the community on what would be fun monsters to see is a good idea. I always enjoyed the periodic "Pirates swarms" that appeared in GC1. I'd rather see that expanded, maybe where Pirates start operating from an unsettled planet somewhere (or get a small starbase somewhere remote) and get more and more bold, with more ships, until the player or an AI takes a fleet and wipes them out at the source.

Hear, Hear! (at least as far as sharks go )

How about a rogue mini black hole wandering about the galaxy at random eating everything in its path? There wouldn't be much point in attacking it but perhaps you could send a constructor to it to "construct an interstellar gate that parked it in a safe part of the Galaxy".

Yes Galciv should do away with all the cheese as i know it puts gamers off.Claims of Galciv being childish have been branded about on popular forums many times.

I suppose we could make it an option.  Will anyone speak for the space monster?

What is the context? I have never heard or seen any posts claiming Galciv to be "childish".

Space monsters are FUN! Maybe the idea of a space shark is lame, but not much worse than the colony-eating space crystal from ST:TNG. I, for one, vote to keep the space monsters.

Edit: Or making monsters an option would be OK too.

I have no problems with space anomalies as such but come on SpaceShark lol, make space anomalies sound serious.

I also thought the same about space sharks/monsters being cheezy.

I would speak against the space monsters... and for space pirates

A random event activating pirates in greater number/strength could have some potential

Maybe..

Perhaps not a space shark, But some other wandering anomaly? And this time please if you must impliment one promise us you will make them tough relative to the state of technology galaxy wide (Dont dump a strong shark in a weak civ, Dump an average shark at an average civ)

Colony eating space crystal !!! Great idea

Into every game a little cheese must fall. If one tries to make any galactic civ style game with the intention of it being as realistic as possible then where is the fun? Heck space monsters have been a mainstay of Sci-fi for a VERY long time.

The space shark is a rendition of the space eel from Moo2, etc.

Now, I am all in favor of the idea of doing more pirates and the ideas here are quite cool but leave some space monster in.

I will speak for the space shark.

Personally I think that space sharks shouldnt be created by random annomlies but should instead happen through "Events" something that wont trigger in the early game but WILL trigger in the later game.

Also I like the moo2 idea of the space shark where the actual space monster would hang around the planet and you'd have to beat it in order to get accsess (ie colonise) that planet, but the planet would have something uber on it (usually a leader or osme such).

Actually now that I think about it - Could we get space monsters guarding the "uber nice" planets? (the ones ranked in the 20's) but not all of them just some kind of random randomness.

By the way I didnt read any of the other posts in this thread!

Whats so wrong with "space shark" ?
Of cause it's not shark flying in space it's a dangerouse space man-eating monster that peope by analogy called "shark" .

Hmmm, good point, but I still want a shark-free GalCiv2. I'm not completely against monsters, but I think they can be made more interesting than they were in GalCiv1. They need to be more than just "a biological ship with a bad attitude".

Hmmm...I want MORE monsters not less! I favor the idea of monsters spawning in another way instead of anomalies though. Also I wouldn't be opposed to making monsters optional.

Good bye space sharks! They just weren't fun for me in GC1, although they were an easy thing to use against the AI in GC1.

Pirates? They were events in GC1. Seemed to work alright like that.

Thumbs down on the shark. Make it an option if you can.

I have to say, while I didn't like how strong those bastards were in the first game, I do need more cannon fodder for my army.  I'm sure minor races will quench some of my thirst for blood, but it'll feel good to stick it to a monster from time to time

And I agree...space monsters guarding planets, anomalies, and resources would be a cool thing.  Now if we can squeeze in time to code it

i personally like the shark, goodness knows many times i have used a scout ship to carefully lure it toward an enemy i was at war with (I always studied propulsion after trade), it destroys pratically all og your enemy and it doesnt hurt you relations with them

Will anyone speak for the space monster?

Well there's a different spin you can put on the space monster mechanic, rebrand them as ancient Precursor weapon systems roaming the galaxy long after their creators are no more. Automated drones acting out some long forgotten command to defend the Precursor empire and so on.

It might not be all that original but you can side step the 70's latex monster image. Or have both.

I like this idea. Never liked the space shark, but I like this one.

Automated drones? Hmmm...it sounds suspiciously like the Star Trek episode "Doomsday Device"
