Let the Space Shark die and be forgotten

Let the Space Shark die and be forgotten

I saw a post from Technician on another thread saying that he hopes the Space Shark doesn't come back. I totally agree. I always thought that was very cheesy. Please let the Space Shark become something of distant legend (ie: do not include in GC2).

If there MUST be space monsters in GC2, maybe some brainstorming with the community on what would be fun monsters to see is a good idea. I always enjoyed the periodic "Pirates swarms" that appeared in GC1. I'd rather see that expanded, maybe where Pirates start operating from an unsettled planet somewhere (or get a small starbase somewhere remote) and get more and more bold, with more ships, until the player or an AI takes a fleet and wipes them out at the source.

it sounds suspiciously like the Star Trek episode "Doomsday Device"

One of the best, IMHO.

Actually I was thinking it sounded like the Beserkers.

Automated drones? Hmmm...it sounds suspiciously like the Star Trek episode "Doomsday Device"

Capt Kirk: "But there is no third planet."
Commodore: "There was! But not anymore!"

goodness knows many times i have used a scout ship to carefully lure it toward an enemy i was at war with (I always studied propulsion after trade), it destroys pratically all og your enemy and it doesnt hurt you relations with them

This is the root of the problem. It is COMPLETELY UNFAIR to the AI to leave monsters as they were in GalCiv 1. Unless the AI can deal with these cheap monster lure tactics, it just isn't right.

Said monsters otherwise go after what it can find including my ships, it is strategy, the genre is "Turn based Space Strategy"

I DID say it wasn't an original idea!

Actually I was thinking more of the Voyager episide "Dreadnought" with the intelligent Cardassian super-missile. Star Trek ain't too original either.

Why not make Space Sharks an option

Also what really sucks is once a Space Shark with 41 attack strength appeared on the fourth turn of the game. It promptly ate my starting suvery vessel, very annoying. I eventually killed it with antimatter missiles.

Space sharks should have strength relative to the period they appear in.

Yes, the shark should have a reltive strength to the civs stregnth. I also think the "Space Shark" should acually look like a shark. The one in GalCiv I looked more like a prawn.

hmm what about a civ produces a super missle? (IE:IGBM) that can blow up civs real fast-like...
NVM... i like neutral hostiles in any game but make space sharks weaker or have an option to say no to them-HOWEVER this can reduce scores!

Space sharks and dragons remind me of MOO & MOO 2.

I think its time for an evolution. Maybe some Warp-drive Wombats or Black Hole Hydras.

I know the Borg is likely trademarked and copyrighted, still you could have a super sentient type of monster hell bent on assimilating the universe.

How about an ancient deity comes back and unleashes its wrath ?

I think we can put heads together and come up with ideas. Old sharks = bad. New Monsters = good.

What about keeping the "monsters" as Ugleb says (#20), some kind of mechanical berserker-like intelligent machines from ages ago. Like in the short story "Lungfish" by David Brin, or any number of other SF stories. Impotent, having lost it's power, it regains some "fuel" by the encounter with the survey vessel (old A.E. van Vogt story, or more recent the Vom by Alan Dean Foster). You could give it a limited lifespan (fuel) of 5 years or such, after which it would revert to a static anomaly, but this may be too complex....

One thing you could ADD with this is that you would get some kind of boost (like the effects from an anomaly, but maybe stronger) once you defeat the intelligent machine, and investigate the resulting debris... This would make it a "defended" anomaly, with potential richer rewards for the one that overcomes the defender. +10% HP, or +2 defense in one or more defense categories... It might even in it's death throes transform into a (military) resource...

You could add in something special for the Yor as well, e.g. the machine will never atack Yor, or will count as free ship to the Yor if discovered by them (this may be hard for balance...)

One thing, the strength of the monster should be relatively high... And its movement limited (1 like in GC1). Yes that's hard if you stumble over one early in the game close to your home... Too bad, that's game / life... You can always try to lure it away by keeping a ship JUST out of it's range... You can even lead it to an enemy that way, another useful tactic. Could the AI do that? I don't know. Is it a problem? NO ! Just as long as there are not too many monsters...

That's so cheesy!

If you are going to do cheese, you need to do a lot of cheese. Otherwise, you have a "serious" or "dry wit" game (which is definately what GC is), and the cheese then stands out so very much because it's completely out of place.

The option sounds the best way to go (pleases everyone)

As for other types of monsters, how about something similar to locusts (or locust-like behavior)? If anyone remembers an 80's cartoon from Japan, Robotech, the Invid could be killers (literally and figuratively)... or something that does not so much attack as consume.... Could be as it eats it "repairs" itself--i.e. get healthy... or something like the space version of deer... peaceful but a pain when they colide with you (just like in real life, the damage done to a vehicle is horrendous). Or how about the Jellyfish from that one Crusade episode (got frisky with the ship, that was hilarious!!! )

Just some ideas...

I never had a personal problem with the space shark. It was annoying at times, but you know, he's part of space so you kind of have to accept him. In fact, scientists have proven there is no way for space to exist without sharks in it. Here's a diagram:

As you can see, the space shark is a fundamental part of the universe. You can't be any more angry at it than say, gravity or time. All these things can suck, but you must learn how they work and make the best of them. And be glad there are no space bees.
