Linux

Lately I see some people trying to advocate Linux here. Interesting, but of little use on a Windows Customization site. A statement like "this works better on Linux" may or may not be true, but is annoying. You are of course free to have your own opnion, but I think it doesn't serve any purpose here.

/me predicts there is a 99% chance that this thread will end up in a discussion how great Linux or the Mac is.

Maybe it will attract the Linux and Mac advocates and cause the rest of the threads to be free from this nonsense.

I don't know about you guys, but I used linux, about 2 years ago, couldn't get much of anything to work, for a month I tried, couldn't adjust the screen resolution which was like 1600x1600 drove me crazy how small everything was. Couldn't get my modem to work, and it was a top of the line, worlds most common, us robotics. so I couldn't go online, and I had so much trouble installing software, the fact is I fixed my first computer when I was 8. I could use dos, and windows better than the experts by the time I was in high school. But I couldn't make heads or tails of linux. Im not saying it's bad, but you'd better have a degree in computer science if you want to use linux on a daily basis. However that was two years ago.

Just to add, the main reason I love windows so much is because of Stardock, without them I may not be so biased, I hate to use a computer anymore without windowblinds, and desktop x is best things I've ever used for productivity... they don't have those for Linux (or mac

I had lots of problems with ahrdware as well when I first installed Windows XP. But XP changed, and so did Linux. I've installed Linux recently without a single problem about anything.

Linux has changed so much in a user perspective that I would indeed consider it for a "gamma" computer. It has become just as easy t use than Windows or Mac.  The dowsides are mainly the lack of support from the major players in the software industry (Adobe, Macromedia, etc.) and the uninstall process for the applications. Most causal users (email, browsing the Net, occasional Word letter, etc.) don't install a lot of stuff so for them it wouldn't be an issue.

I think that Linux is perfectly viable and a very valid choice for an OS, as much so as Widows. But the reason I like it is mainly because Microsoft has to be tought that they don't own the World. Competition is good, and I will always welcome alternatives and the right to choose.

that depends on what you use. Red Hat, Mandrake and SuSe are quite full of "holes". They
are not so secure, but other like free bsd and Debian is the best you can use
when it comes to security

My 2 pennies worth >>>
I use OSX, Linux & BeOS as well as Windows XP.
I don't personally think either is better then the other, all of these OS's have there pros and cons, I tend use my Windows XP box the most because of the the sheer amount of software there is for it. I love my iMac, but I seem to use it less and less these days. BeOS is by far my favorte OS and I use this the most, but it is in serious need of a update and I hope that the new version "Zeta" will do that and bring some much needed "zing" to it.

Thats it I feel better now

That is complete FUD >

da_zman20: Give Linux another try. It has changed over the past two years, and the list of supported hardware has grown. I may be a person with a computer science degree, but I do not believe that you need one to get use out of Linux. All we used in college was Windows so there was not much in my background for Linux except for an understanding of computer science concepts. Linux just takes time and patience and maybe a bit of intelligence too.

Tech Cat: ever heard of bugtraq?
Maybe you should watch it more
Maybe you'll retract your "FUD" statement then.

ho ho

Wow, nice answer, now, remove head from anal opening, and think up your own non "read this" answer to the fact that Red Hat is a POS, SuSe is full of holes, and netbsd still hasn't had a single hole in many years on a major distribution.

Propaganda is propaganda, whether is on microsoft.com, linux.com, or geoshitties.

Too bad I'm not "pro windows" as you'd like it to be.
Now c'mon, answer the question.

But you can't can you? You're just as bad as half the "windows r00lz!" kids.

OpenBSD: "Only one remote hole in the default install, in more than 7 years!"
Can Linux say that?
(no)

You meantioned bugtraq. Give me a link so I can evaluate how valid their claims are. I also want to check out to see if they are honest about the insecurity of Windows networks.

the only stable and secure computer OS/NOS is one still on the CD...

You should really not be trying so hard, you're gonna get burned.

All network OSes have bugs. None of them are perfect. A search on OpenBSD found it to be just as insecure as the other systems. Enough of this one OS is superior to the other crap.

The main reason I prefer an alternative to Windows is that I do not like Microsoft. Windows has it's pros and cons as any other system does.

"i do not like microsoft"
why? because they're successful?
you want to root for the underdog which seems to be the l33t thing to do... dosen't last long... but thats how it is...

and no, openbsd dosen't have as many "holes" if you will as many of the popular linux distros have.
I do not like Microsoft because they are an evil corporation bent on maintaining their monopoly and taking over the world.

I'm not "l33t". Notice I don't spell like a l33t t33n. Notice I say Windows not Windoze. I have my reasons for disliking MS. I have been using MS products for years and got sick of their crap. I got sick of their lies about how their next product was so perfect and it turned out to be crap. Windows ME and the lies they told about it before it came out is a good example.

Can't you say anything positive about Linux or is pissing on Linux your purpose in life?

No, actually, I can't say anything good about linux. GPL will always hinder it. The kernel change commits by one person will always hinder it. The inability for them to decide on common formats will probably be its ultimate demise.

There are too many factors between the different distros and groups in the linux movement who refuse to budge/compromise with one another that eventually they'll just kill themselves off.

While BSD has been around longer and continues to plod away at a steady pace of existance which those who use it, use it with love and care and are quite happy that they don't need to worry about the infighting of the linux groups ever happening within the BSD groups.

My son, the programming savant, hates the linux, unix, etc. devotees. Some great lines of his: "Linux user = command line facist" or the other (my personal favorite) "Of course Linux is more stable than Windows, theres nothing to run on it."

For my last post here lemme tell you a story...

The analogy between cars and operating systems is not half bad, and so let me run with it for a moment, as a way of giving an executive summary of our situation today.

Imagine a crossroads where four competing auto dealerships are situated. One of them (Microsoft) is much, much bigger than the others. It started out years ago selling three-speed bicycles (MS-DOS); these were not perfect, but they worked, and when they broke you could easily fix them.

There was a competing bicycle dealership next door (Apple) that one day began selling motorized vehicles--expensive but attractively styled cars with their innards hermetically sealed, so that how they worked was something of a mystery.

The big dealership responded by rushing a moped upgrade kit (the original Windows) onto the market. This was a Rube Goldberg contraption that, when bolted onto a three-speed bicycle, enabled it to keep up, just barely, with Apple-cars. The users had to wear goggles and were always picking bugs out of their teeth while Apple owners sped along in hermetically sealed comfort, sneering out the windows. But the Micro-mopeds were cheap, and easy to fix compared with the Apple-cars, and their market share waxed.

Eventually the big dealership came out with a full-fledged car: a colossal station wagon (Windows 95). It had all the aesthetic appeal of a Soviet worker housing block, it leaked oil and blew gaskets, and it was an enormous success. A little later, they also came out with a hulking off-road vehicle intended for industrial users (Windows NT) which was no more beautiful than the station wagon, and only a little more reliable.

Since then there has been a lot of noise and shouting, but little has changed. The smaller dealership continues to sell sleek Euro-styled sedans and to spend a lot of money on advertising campaigns. They have had GOING OUT OF BUSINESS! signs taped up in their windows for so long that they have gotten all yellow and curly. The big one keeps making bigger and bigger station wagons and ORVs.

On the other side of the road are two competitors that have come along more recently.

One of them (Be, Inc.) is selling fully operational Batmobiles (the BeOS). They are more beautiful and stylish even than the Euro-sedans, better designed, more technologically advanced, and at least as reliable as anything else on the market--and yet cheaper than the others.

With one exception, that is: Linux, which is right next door, and which is not a business at all. It's a bunch of RVs, yurts, tepees, and geodesic domes set up in a field and organized by consensus. The people who live there are making tanks. These are not old-fashioned, cast-iron Soviet tanks; these are more like the M1 tanks of the U.S. Army, made of space-age materials and jammed with sophisticated technology from one end to the other. But they are better than Army tanks. They've been modified in such a way that they never, ever break down, are light and maneuverable enough to use on ordinary streets, and use no more fuel than a subcompact car. These tanks are being cranked out, on the spot, at a terrific pace, and a vast number of them are lined up along the edge of the road with keys in the ignition. Anyone who wants can simply climb into one and drive it away for free.

Customers come to this crossroads in throngs, day and night. Ninety percent of them go straight to the biggest dealership and buy station wagons or off-road vehicles. They do not even look at the other dealerships.

Of the remaining ten percent, most go and buy a sleek Euro-sedan, pausing only to turn up their noses at the philistines going to buy the station wagons and ORVs. If they even notice the people on the opposite side of the road, selling the cheaper, technically superior vehicles, these customers deride them cranks and half-wits.

The Batmobile outlet sells a few vehicles to the occasional car nut who wants a second vehicle to go with his station wagon, but seems to accept, at least for now, that it's a fringe player.

The group giving away the free tanks only stays alive because it is staffed by volunteers, who are lined up at the edge of the street with bullhorns, trying to draw customers' attention to this incredible situation. A typical conversation goes something like this:

Hacker with bullhorn: "Save your money! Accept one of our free tanks! It is invulnerable, and can drive across rocks and swamps at ninety miles an hour while getting a hundred miles to the gallon!"

Prospective station wagon buyer: "I know what you say is true...but...er...I don't know how to maintain a tank!"

Bullhorn: "You don't know how to maintain a station wagon either!"

Buyer: "But this dealership has mechanics on staff. If something goes wrong with my station wagon, I can take a day off work, bring it here, and pay them to work on it while I sit in the waiting room for hours, listening to elevator music."

Bullhorn: "But if you accept one of our free tanks we will send volunteers to your house to fix it for free while you sleep!"

Buyer: "Stay away from my house, you freak!"

Bullhorn: "But..."

Buyer: "Can't you see that everyone is buying station wagons?"

I for one LOVE my BIG SHINY NEW TANK.
I remember reading this story in a free e-book about operating systems. Great analogy. I would prefer one of those free tanks and would even donate money to the mechanics to make sure they can keep cranking out more.

Um I have to Question a remark I read at the top..Something about Linux being so Hacker friendly and Thats why everyone does use it...Um last time I checked Linux is a free OS period from the Linux Web sites...Only the Mac OS X and 9 cost money..So you dont need to hack Linux...Or as we put it Go Cruz for SAerialz or Key genzz...Linux rocks Dos sucks......I only use Windows Because of my type of work..( I just cant seem to convince Multi Billion Dollar corps to Switch all their old Dos crap to a nice clean User friendly Unix/Linux solution..And most of all software is written to be used in DOS..Now we know about Virtual PC for Mac..But the general publ;ic is the only true user for that application..Buisnesses cant afford to revamp an entire nationwide network to use linux...WAWAWAWA....!!!!!

don't forget

"And I'm going to starve to death because everyone expects my software to be free, or they make their own version for free that works better!"

Typical FUD. Many Linux distros charge money for their version of Linux. Much of the code is written by programmers paid by Linux companies.
