Last person to post wins, unless they are a moderator or admin.

Basically, this game is played so that the last person who post wins. What do they win? The ThreadKiller's Achievement; The honor of being the last person to post by virtue of the content of their post. However, moderators, admins, and anyone else who has the ability to lock the thread are disqualified from winning the ThreadKiller's Achievement, if they win by locking. If the thread is won by method of locking, the "winner" gains the Achievement Of Reprehensible Epic Lameness.

You know, looking at it, they say power corrupts, and I would argue that this is even more the case in democracy. If your power is lost at the whims of a fickle populace, even the noblest of intentions will rapidly turn into a fight to win that next election, give in to the reckless short-term whining of the masses for just that one extra term to finish the plan, make that big change.
End of Oatesy03's quote

Your thinking is logical, but history has shown that putting power all in one place leads to corruption 100% of the time.

and you know what they say, "those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it"

putting the power in the hands of the masses is a bad idea, yes, but putting power into the hands of one person is a WORSE idea...

I am a fan of Machiavellian thinking, as it provides a very true portrayal of the populace's untruthfulness and greed, however, I also feel that he was being somewhat unrealistic, as nobody can uphold all of Machiavelli's ideals and maintain their system perfectly...

Not only this, but if someone actually did manage to maintain a Machiavellian rule, the US would charge in and cut them down on the grounds of "tyranny and oppression"

we're as bad as the rest

terrorists

everything

I can see how that works, not necessarily so much as a means off corruption alone, but just putting the politician's focus in the wrong place. But then Lenin and Stalin didn't have to worry about elections, rather they were fanatical about their beliefs and even paranoid. Hitler no longer worried after his first election, but was nuts. Democracy has produced good men. FDR knew that the people would be unhappy if they knew every detail, but the man was giving it an honest effort to stabilize America and eliminate the Nazis. JFK wanted to see civil rights move forward and admitted to his mistakes. Even as far back as Jefferson, he took unilateral actions to provide for the safety of Americans, but then gave away Presidental powers when the task was done.

A tyrant is a man who watches the gate in our darkest hour. Some will keep a firm grasp on power when the dawn breaks and some will walk away from it all. Every government in every age of man has seen both.

Edit: I was typing when Krdax posted. I don't think all the power in one hand is 100% corrupting, but then it's almost never been that way. Even Ceasars (and there were some great ones) had at least a weak Senate or the Preatorian to fear. And the mob is always present. That all aside, he is right in that there is no perfect system. Then again, I prefer honest imperfection over a dishonest utopia.

why the decline?

you can always promise the American people later that you did not have sex with that possum and when the press investigates further you just debate what 'is' is.
