Year Zero Club

Year Zero Club

...when simply winning is not enough!

First off, I couldn't have done this without the inspiration of the Metaverse League and Wyndstar in particular. Kudos to the master!

Now to the matter at hand.

I finally did it. A year zero win! Granted, it was only against 1 AI and on challenging (my current level) but I'm certain that 'tough' wouldn't have been much harder. On the other hand, it was my first attempt at an 'all-labs' and 'lease instead of buy' approach, so I consider myself proud that I could do it at all.

Here is the link to the character, as a proof: http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=player&id=14517

For all of you, who like me thought that year zero wins are nigh impossible: Try it! Read the posts about it! It is difficult, requires constant micromanagement, but I found it incredibly rewarding to see that victory screen after 25 - 30 turns. Not the way I'd like to play constantly, but as a change of pace, it's a incredible challenge.

And of course, once you've accomplished your first 'Year Zero', post here and rejoice!

As an edit, I now include the current top score.

Attention new players!
Do not be frightened by these scores! Playing a ZYW is actually really easy, and getting a score close to 30000 points takes just a few tries. These games are usually finished in less than 20 minutes, so have at it. Try the tiny ZYWs first, I find them easier and you might get the unique chance to beat players like neilo or Wyndstar.

Current ZYW record holders:

'expert' ZYW - Gigantic

1) 198450 points - MottiKhan

2) 119000 points - Kzinti Patriarch

3) 109500 points - neilo

'classic' ZYW - Tiny

1) 56700points - MottiKhan

2) 40600 points - Kzinti Patriarch / Magnumaniac

3) 38850 points - Wyndstar

Not every time, but i have done. I'll post a detailed description of what i do to compare with the description you do mate, and ill play a few games going back to those techs again.
;)

Its not going to make a major difference, but the differential with your scores may be just a bunch of little things that are coinciding. More later...work is busy today.

Up to 97650 on a TA ZYW now - there is a 100K+ game to be had, I'm sure.  :)

i just joined the club with a 10000 point game after 2 disappointing 1 year and 2 or 3 week games. :) was on a tiny map.

Only got to 28k so far, but it's been a while since I tried, perhaps I should give it another go...

Congratulations Neilo!

By the way Dave, it took some of us (points at self) many more attempts to breach the 10K on a tiny map... ;)

actually, my next try i brought up one difficulty level and got another year 0 with 11000 points :)

Good effort DSep!

A note about difficulty: I usually play on tough / challenging, but with ZYW (once I got the strategy ironed out) I can easily play on suicidal - for about double to triple the score.

I got a 30800 year zero score tiny suicidal with thanks to the help and advise here and from KzintiPatriarch.

Hmm.

My apologies if this is a little overly wordy; I believe most of us are familiar with this phenomenon by now but I thought I'd mention it as it helps understand my reasoning for my suggestion.

Since higher difficulty levels confer a hidden research bonus when a research bonus is present and at Suicidal in particular the bonus for such is in fact higher than the chosen bonus (previous data suggests an artificial bonus of 1.5x the chosen value, while my most recent data points to approximately an artificial bonus of 1.64x the chosen value, at this difficulty setting)...

I wonder if anyone has gone to the trouble to research up to Sensors III (or, in all probability, Sensors IV due to overflow) and lease buy Nano Recorders for an extra 25% or so research bonus (10% multiplied by difficulty level).

Obviously this becomes more difficult with TA, due to the tech trees, but it may still be a valid option.

And although in this light Hyper Computers are rather attractive as well, it seems moderately unlikely to me that someone could find the time for that much research to be diverted to something else, as well as the fact that research would have to be maintained for some time after obtaining it to have any noticeable effect on score.

Just a random thought or two, as the focus appears to have shifted away from economics and towards research.

It's most likely prohibitively expensive, at least for larger maps, where money is especially tight. I think a better alternative would be the research coordination center. Good thought though. :)

I went back and tried a couple tiny ZYWs yesterday, hoping to break the record utilizing some of my new knowledge/tactics. I got very close once with a 39,900 point game. Might try some more today or over the weekend.

Tempted by the scores on Gigantic maps, I tried a Huge map as a warm up, and got a 42000 score ZYW with the Korx.
It looked doable on a Gigantic, so I plunged straight in, without changing tactics, only to -almost- get the door slammed into my face. It was not a ZYW (a 1YW I'm afraid, prolonged by a single colony ship that got away) and I crashed at 39550. But I'll keep looking for the trick without reading too much info in this thread. Wanna find out myself how it's done. :D

Edit: I tried it one more time, Gigantic ZYW worth 45500 points... not exactly a top score, but location proves to be everything...

End of quote

For sure, if the AI is not within your sphere of range, keep hitting CTRL+N till they are. ;)

I have built the Research Co-Ord Center and found that the scores were little different to what i was getting without it. Getting to it did require some neglect of the econ/govt lines.

As to Nano Recorders, though the Sensors line is relatively cheap, for them to be of any use score wise you would have to get to them very early in the game thus halting the push for the 13 week win, and their cost, as KP said would surely break you thus killing any chance of completing the win.

Worth looking into though.

Last game I still needed a constructor to boost my range to get the kill, never managed to land a 13 week win anyhow, so used to dealing with some resistance...

What has been key in my gigantic ZYW scores has been a speed bonus, and researching more engine techs. And as Neilo said, the proximal location of the enemy homeworld is vital too. I almost always finish on April 8th now. :)

First ZYW for me, 28k with TA 1.95 as pure Korath.

Damned Korx just kept running like dogs ~coughs~. That seems to be my biggest problem, hunting them down in time. I had to start the war over since the game would have ended on Jan 22nd the first run through. I reeled that in to June 1st on the redo.

31,500 for next game. I had them better contained and no econ crashes this round.

Nicely done with the Korath! :CONGRAT:
Sorry, 28k is still highest with pure Korath. 31.5k was a custom race. Since that post I've broken that now too:

:CONGRAT: Great effort...I might have to play some tiny games some time soon again.. ;)

Damn, tried to edit that post so I didn't need to make a new post w/ the 35,700

Perhaps I'll stop the game by game updates now lol. I'll hold back til Monday...unless I miraculously beat KP/Mag
