Forums are Back Up

Huzzah!

We've completed our work for the night and the forums are back up and running.  You'll notice a number of visual changes, and you'll hopefully notice improved speed and general performance.

Please post any issues you run into here.  We've done a lot of testing this past week and tonight, but if something slipped through we want to know so it can be fixed quickly.

Thank you all for your patience.

One thing i am not liking (and so far its the only one that annoys me) is that the 'sticky' posts are inverted by date with the newest one at the bottom? Looks strange and means updates are easily overlooked. Other than that a nice upgrade :CONGRAT:

I have a normal size reply box now, which is nice. The small font is still very annoying though. I tried changing it with the dropdown list, which inserted some code into the reply for the text formatting. But what I type in the box is not what I chose, so it's still hard to read as I type. The site is definitely faster, so good job on that aspect. Edit: Well, changing the font didn't change the font. And my last edit didn't work.

I have tried twice to edit that last post, and both times it failed to save the changes.

And the font didn't change either.

Ditto what Binjack said... this forum was already difficult to read, even before the update, with this white-on-black text. I know the devs are probably thinking "space theme" but that's a terrible combination for legibility, and it's the reason you don't often see it used any more.

I suppose that won't change, but the new smaller default font makes it even harder to read, especially on higher res desktops (I'm using 1600x1200). This font is tinier than in any other forum I visit. The message text is also displayed in a narrower box than before. Adding a break after "Member No." would help, but the overall impression is that the actual forum posts are being marginalized, while too much screen real estate is taken up with navigation, avatars, MV medals, and other visual clutter. How about giving some importance to the message text, which is the only reason we come here?

The server speed seems much better, but the new "look" is making my eyes bleed.

P.S. the reply box looks wide enough to me (Firefox).

And when I posted that last message, all the carriage returns were removed from #27.

This site still needs some tweaks, for sure.

Site does not remember where in a thread you last visited either. Refers you to page one constantly.

Not sure if its my mouse or this new forum but my wheel only partially works. If I actively rotate the mouse wheel up and down, the screen will scroll up and down accordingly. But on those really long pages where I like to "click" the mouse wheel to get that little up and down arrow thing that makes it move faster, well that doesn't work on this website anymore. Anyone else having this problem?

I'm noticing that the in the My Replies section, the post times for the "Last Reply" and "My Last Reply" are the same even though in the majority of cases I am not the most recent post.

I would like to comment that the text is not actually smaller. I did a couple of print screens (I have one before changes) to compare text, and they all look the same when you compare the letters.

Seems to be still a work in progress. I checked in earlier and saw the tiny reply box problem. That seems fixed now. However I simply tried to go to the metaverse forum and got the we're sorry IE had to close issue but tried it again and it seemed to work. This is with IE6.

There still seems to be an issue if I click on Enlarge editor where the editor only shows up on the left half of my screen with the mostly obscured posts in the right half.

I'm sure this will all resolved shortly, the text does seem "crisper" and the double vision mouseover on the medals is fixed. However I did prefer the black backgound of the medals as opposed to the grey but that's not a big deal.

Ah. Looks good. Well, the text telling you that you are not logged in, when attempting to reply while not logged in, was Dark Blue on a Black Background. That's not very easy to read. ( Using Firefox BTW. ) Not very important, but that's all I found... :-p

What browser are you using? Firefox 2.0 here.

Also, confirming earlier comments that the threat titles aren't showing old vs. new posts (check your colors for new vs. visited links, guys). I'm also not getting the jump to unread posts feature that was here, in the prior version.

P.S. just mentioning again that the SPEED of the forum is a mega improvement. That's really nice. Now fix the way we actually read information here (larger font size, more emphasis on the text info, less on the graphics flash), and it will be perfect. :CONGRAT:

My reply #41 started by hitting the Quote key for message #37:

"I would like to comment that the text is not actually smaller. I did a couple of print screens (I have one before changes) to compare text, and they all look the same when you compare the letters."

That's what I saw in the editor, when writing. But the actual post is now showing a quote from message #36, the prior message.

Well, as to the text not being smaller - it is harder to read if nothing else.

The 'print screens' may show a similar text size, but to my eyes it is smaller by at least a couple points.

The text size is smaller in the reply box as well.

I get eye-strain with this current font. And it should not be that difficult to set it to what it was before.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not but I sure am getting a lot of problems using IE6. I do find scrolling through a thread far more painful than it used to be.

Mostly it's some kind of "can't perform operation" error that doesn't crash IE but does take you to a page unavailable screen but you can navigate back to where you were and try again and it mostly will work the second time.

I also get a good handful of "we're sorry but IE has encountered a problem and has to close" and then IE closes down.

Any operation in a thread seems to take you back to the beginning of the thread. Which is annoying because scrolling through the pages of a thread are what's likely to give me the "can't perform operation" error.

Also the reduction to 25 replies per page increases the number of pages. I prefer the 50 replies per page that we used to have.

And the problem of not remembering the last read post, so you always start at reply #1, is also annoying.

There are problems to be worked out, to be sure.
And I am confident that the devs will do so.

But it seems some of the problems are with specific browsers, which are even harder to fix.
The 25-per-page I am not so concerned with, even though I prefer 50 as well.

I am using IE7, by the way. I don't get the errors that Mumblefratz is getting.

I still can not edit a post.
Perhaps Mumblefratz could try that operation in IE6?

HEY!!! I just did an edit, and it worked!!!
I changed 'an' to 'am' - and it actually carried over.
wow

But I was still sent back to the first post in the thread, at #1 page 1.

See?
Things are being worked out, one thing at a time.

Maybe the default font will get worked in there somewhere.
I hate this this (what is it - Times New Roman or Courier New size 1 or 10pt) font.

Change it to Verdana or Tahoma size 2 - or 12 pt. SOMETHING!!! - that is closer to the older format.

The link supposed to take you to the last post (the little grey arrow pointing right) also doesn't work.

Following on from my last post:

... getting a full size reply window now, good work guys (and the enlarge editor commands seems to work fine now as well).

If you click on someone's nick and look at their profile. Then click on metaverse profile, you end up looking at your own meta profile and not theirs.

In Opera (9.25), My Replies still doesn't show "visited since last post" (all links are bold). I also finally noticed the Last Post and "My" last post are wonky as mentioned above--it appears to just show last post whether or not I made it.

Also, I consistently get a "no such thing" error on first click of View all recent posts. If I click the link on that error page, then I get the recent items.

On the font size thing, I suspect us tired-eyes folk were tricked by the additional white space. It's interesting to see the Member No. info, but the new left column creates lots of wasted real estate for longer posts. (Yes, I know I type too much :p)
