Forums are Back Up

Huzzah!

We've completed our work for the night and the forums are back up and running.  You'll notice a number of visual changes, and you'll hopefully notice improved speed and general performance.

Please post any issues you run into here.  We've done a lot of testing this past week and tonight, but if something slipped through we want to know so it can be fixed quickly.

Thank you all for your patience.

The error I reported earlier was gone, but it's back now. Here's a screenshot of it from the Stardock Forums. The same issues affecting these forums appear to be affecting them as well.

I was getting the operation aborted error quite a lot at home but I've not got one at work. I'm using IE6 in both cases however I don't have my security screwed down so tightly to block ActiveX and Java scripts on my work PC.

Excellent new 'layout'... and, since i've been using Mozilla 1.7.11/Gecko (no longer supported, but has been replaced with SeaMonkey - which i will possibly upgrade to, if ever!) to visit these forums, i had experienced a few glitches before; but, now, all is perfectly lined-up.
I do use ad-block a lot to clearup the mess of some repetive footers & unwanted pub-images and thought the site framework didn't react so well to this customized method; not so, it was the engine itself and what steps Moz had to do to adapt to it (somehow).

Kinda new, but i DO like this format.

Oh oh, I have one. Quote somebody who has already quoted somebody. The second set of quote flags don't appear.

Using FF 2.0.0.10 here.

I actually had something related to quote flags as well. It was a user error but the error was difficult to detect because of what I think may be an error in parsing unbalanced quote tags.

For example, I often quote an entire reply that itself includes quoted text. In this case I expect the quotes to cascade.

As a quick example

{quote}{quote}
quoted text from reply
{/quote}
reply text
{/quote}

should appear like this

quoted text from reply
End of quote

reply text
End of quote

However in a similar situation you may want to simply string a sequence of quotes.

{quote}
quote 1
{/quote}
response 1

{quote}
quote 2
{/quote}
response 2

And this should appear like

quote 1
End of quote

response 1

quote 2
End of quote

response 2

However if you make a mistake and instead have the following

{quote}
quote 1
{/quote}
response 1

quote 2
{/quote}
response 2

I attempted to put in the real example of the unbalanced quote here but it totally screwed up the entire reply in totally non obvious ways which in fact basically demonstrated the problem I'm trying to report. I also tried moving the offending tags to both the beginning and the end of the reply but still no joy. What I will do is place the single example in the following reply.

However in this case I would expect the above error to come out like this.

quote 1
End of quote

response 1

quote 2
{/quote}
response 2

I'm not totally sure that I'm correct as to what the proper parsing of incorrectly specified quote tags should be but the way I proposed places the error in a far easier place to figure out where the error is. When I first made the mistake for the life of me I couldn't figure out why my initial {/quote} wasn't being accepted when there was actually no problem with it but the problem was that a following {quote} was missing.
Reply #56 Top
{quote}
quote 1
{/quote}
response 1

quote 2
{/quote}
response 2

displays as

quote 1
[/quote]
response 1

quote 2
End of quote

response 2

Actually it does appear that quoting a reply with a quote in it is now totally messed up.

Not only do no embedded quotes appear in the quote it also appears to me that now there is a total loss of every carriage return in the quoted text leaving the result totally formless.

I think this is a recent development since I think this used to work OK, or least the removal of carriage returns did not previously occur.

Another issue that I just discovered is that there has been a change to the ability to edit the OP of a thread.

It appears that this is allowed however it also appears that it is now required to give an explanation about why the OP is being edited.

This is the justification that I entered when I went to update the OP of the MVL RUles thread. Luckily this didn't appear in the OP itself where it could be very confusing (actually that is a rather long OP so I'm not positive about this, but I did give a cursory look and couldn't find it).

Anyway this is what I wrote:

This OP is continually updated with the current state of MVL Rules. These are expected to change often and the desire is to have a single place where the current rules may be accessed. I'm hopeful that the ability to modify the OP of a thread will still be allowed without undue complication since this is a feature that is commonly used to provide a single source of information that may need continual update.

Another minor point is that the editing of the OP is not in exactly the same format as the original post in that it appears to enforce some kind of double spacing.

As I said in my justification, I hope this functionality will still be allowed without undue complication.

Congrats for the forum upgrade! It looks a lot more like state of the art than before.

The text box is fine for me, using Firefox 2.0.0.12. Just a note: The link to the thread "Forums are back up" from the main forums page (under GalCiv II News/General) points to a "this post has been removed message".

I think there was a double-posting of the announcement and that one got the axe.
Reply #61 Top
I guess you're right, thanks.

Whenever I'm editing a reply on the updated forums, I'm taken to the first page of the thread after posting the changes, is that intentional?

Most forums have a "go to last posting" functionality, this one doesn't seem to have one or it doesn't work for me. I get to see the first page of a thread when clicking on a thread title or on the small arrow on the right, not sure if that is what should be happening. Usually the small arrow takes you to the newest reply in a thread or the oldest one you haven't seen yet when logged in.

I do hope that they get that sorted soon, going to multipage posts repeatedly(like I do with the MVL threads) can get annoying. It must be driving Kryo nuts having to repeatedly check them all.

These operation aborted messages are killing me!!!

I probably have a fairly unique and restrictive setup of IE6 as it is possible to have.

I wouldn't doubt that because of this I'm am overly susceptable to these errors. But I'm getting these things every thread and almost every page I scroll to on every page I visit.

Yes I can merely go back and get to where I was going anyway but still these errors are making my life miserable.

Please help! Thanks. :)

BTW I know the web team would never make such a suggestion but I can do without the inevitable contributions from the peanut gallery that I should use FF, Opera, IE7 or anything other than what I'm using which happens to work exactly the way I want it to work on every other site that I visit.

IE6 is still the mainstay browser and even though I readily admit to using it with entirely customized settings chosen so as to restrict active content (there is no motion in GIF files on my PC for example), I have no interest in changing at this point.

Thank you for your understanding. :)

Well, The reply box is now full sized for me, but it still seems that the cookie system is not working yet.
I am running AOL explorer on windows XP.

edit

Editing was also not working, But it seems to be fine now.

Thanks a lot (but I still want a cookie ;)

I saw the changes first on the SINS site. Probably because of cached images and pages here preventing me from seeing the changes sooner.

You're not alone. I get them constantly and my IE6 setup is fairly standard.

I'm a loyal FF user, but I'm not the type who says "death to IE, all problems stem from internet exploder!!!". Maybe I'm just not the pushy type /shrug.

On the flip side to things, last I checked, IE was still the dominating force of the most used browser (I'd like to see these numbers excluding windows/office update site visits though). That said, a site should work for the majority of users...so the "switch to X to fix it" mantra should be avoided at all costs. You should switch to X for reasons beyond website compatibility.

Hi there again.
I am still having the cookie problem on AOL explorer.
By the cookie problem I mean that the site no longer tracks which posts I visit or revisit. Before the upgrade, a post that I had already read woulde be dimmed out unless there had been a new entry since I read it. Also, if I revisited a post with a new entry, it would take me to that entry.
Currently, it does none of that. All posts look the same reguardless of whether I have visited them and when revisiting a post I aqm always taken to the first entry.

Now, I do realise that you are under no obligation to make things convienient for me and I am whining a bit because i was spoiled at how it used to work. The new format does look great, but it is harder to follow all the posts for me.

Scincerely,

Scintor, it's not just a problem with AOL explorer.

Also an issue is in the "My Replies" section it's not distinguishing between your last reply and someone else's last reply. Perfect example, check your My Replies after I posted this and the dates match perfectly...even though it's not the date you had replied.

As I've noted a few times around the 'new forum' threads, read/unread detection is presently disabled. It should be back soon.

That will apparently not be coming back. It was decided that automatically shooting you to the end of a thread that you've read before (regardless if you'd read only the first page, or fifty) was too confusing to newbies. As with most other forums, there will just be an on-index pagination link for those who want to start on the last page.
Reply #71 Top
thanks Kryo for the updates. I actually agree with the going to the 1st page; I can see where it can be more helpful to newbies.

I am glad the read/unread detection will be back soon, that is currently my only major gripe I have of the new forum format.

Well this is amazing! I finally got somthing to happen! been trying to post in the forums but all I get is a service not available message, and before you ask,I do have an account and logged in as well. what the heck????
Reply #73 Top
its been an intermittent problem today. My guess is that they are trying to code in some forum fixes without actually shutting down the forums in the meantime. This also means that its not always possible to submit a MV game (as I found out)

The GC2/Sins/And-probably-some-other-forums server has been "cranky" today.
