Metaverse League Round 4

Metaverse League Round 4

Let the games begin!!!!!

Hi all and welcome to round 4 and a new season of the MV League. First i would like to congratulate the Celestial Crusaders for their victory in season 1.

A big welcome to all our new players that have joined us. We hope you like the league as much as the rest of us do, and we hope you stay with us for a long time.

Please check out this thread guys, The MVL and the AltMeta, we have been trying to get the MVL into the AltMeta for a while and now we are finally on the road to do this. We do need your support though. It will not be a quick and easy process for Kryo but he is willing to do this if there is the support to go with it. Please drop by this thread and lend your support to this effort.

As most of you know we shook things up for this round with a player draft. For those that we unaware of this i will explain. We have a new team for this season, The Eternal Evildoers/Villainy (not sure yet on the name) and to fill this new team in a fair manner and to try and create a level playing field across all teams we instigated a draft. The captain of each team stayed a member and everyone else went into the player pool.(Silverbeacher was appointed Team E captain).

Each team then had two draft picks each and the rest of the team spots filled randomly.

So here are the new look teams,

(Xei Win Toh has abstained from play until the arrival of TA)

See your captain for the new forum passwords at the Galactic Core.

As the league expands there is a need for more people to help administer and run the league. Here is a rundown of "official" positions.

Commissioner - Neilo
Vice Commissioner/Score Keeper - Firebender
Score Keeper - Silverbeacher
Rule Moderation - Mumblefratz

Also we have two current threads guys, the MVL Round 4 Draft and Discussion thread and the MVL Rulebook thread.

It is in the MVL Rulebook thread that all rules for the league will be kept. Mumblefratz will keep the OP of that thread updated with the current rules as they change across rounds. Bar for a change in the way ties are managed i do believe that the rules are very similar as to round 3.

Without further delay here is the Round 4 challenge,

A Diplomatic Victory(alliance) in a small map with 5 opponents.

Habitable planets - Abundant
Number of stars - Occasional
Number of planets - Common
Star density - Tight Clusters
Anomolies - Common
Asteroids - Rare
Tech rate - Very fast
Minors - random (enabled in DL)

Enable,
Blind Exploration
Mega Events
Super Abilities
Surrenders
Tech trading
and of course all victory conditions.

End of round - Midnight NOV 30 2007 (forum time)

Please guys leave all discussion to the Round 4 Draft and Discussion thread, as to leave this thread free for game submissions. It does get hard to sift through alot of posts to find a submitted game. Thanks.

Well, here's to a re-invigorated league and a nice challenge for round 4.
Good luck all and enjoy your games.

Anyone know of a free, easy to use animated gif maker
End of quote

I've been using Axelsoft .gif animator, which can be found Here. It's got a free version and is easy to use.

btw: If you have an image in mind for your banner or an idea of what you want, I can put together one relatively easily. I find them fun to do

as a reminder to all League players, when submitting a game I need, for score tallying purposes, at the very least: victory type, points, game years, Metaverse character, AND submittal time/date. Other details are helpful for me but not quite as important.

Second important note, if you are unable to post your game to the MV for ANY reason but do have a completed game, please 1) inform us, specifically myself, Neilo, and FireBender at least and 2) you must post a screenshot, preferably one that not only shows victory type and points but shows game time also. (or two screenshots if necc.)

I have already encountered issues in not being able to easily track down games and that makes for some very very tedious work for me.

Thanks for your help in this

I must warn you, you'll probably end up with something like this...

mostly because I could be using my MS paint for an hour and still come up worse....... maybe I could use "the logo creator" that my dad uses...
anyway, tell me what the name of the team is and I'll get started.

Hey, i don't mind having a goofy looking banner....and i like the sound of this "logo creator". Is that something that could be used to make race logo's for in the game?

As for the name we had actually not really settled on one, shocking i know, the two we have are Eternal Evildoers and Eternal Villainy.

You can have the final choice if you like, whatever is easier to come up a banner for, provided the rest of the team don't care, but since the issue has gone on this long i don't think they do.

Guys, DA has pm'ed me with two issues with team A for this round.

1) Bluntblade, a team a player has no-shown. In fact he only made 1 post in any of the threads and did not even create a character for the league. Obviously this would leave the team disadvantaged. Now at first my thought would be for them to play a back up game, but since Blunt did not even create a character to play with i am more than happy for them to be just considered a 4 man team, thus there is no need for a back up game the averages will be fine. Bluntblade would be deleted from the team and league as if he never existed.

Thoughts?

2) TGE has not submitted a game into the threads yet, though he does have a MV submitted game that meets the current game settings. Is this to be considered a non-submital and if so can a backup game be played. Or, in light of the current way of thinking in the AltMetaMVL thread could this game by TGE be selected by DA as this round's game.

Again thoughts?

Although I'm on Team A, I may as well throw my 2 cents in.

1) If Bluntbalde shows up then wonderful if not then I agree the team is simply a 4 man team.

I would suggest that Bluntblade be sent an encouraging PM as a reminder. We all know about RL and he may be just experiencing some. In cases like this I would like to try and make sure that someone that has interest in the League doesn't feel like they can't join later just because they messed up on the first go round. In fact as long as no one objects I volunteer to send him the encouraging reminder.

2) IIRC TGE has shown up late before. I think it was a similar circumstance where he had an obvious submission but simply missed submitting by the end date but did show up very shortly after. My natural inclination if he had no obvious submission would be to allow a teammate to do a backup game but since he does have a game apparently fitting the criteria that certainly should be considered the "backup".

One point however, this game should not be "submitted" until it's clear that TGE has missed the deadline. It's very likely that he will return in plenty of time and submit it or another he may be working on. Only if he doesn't show in time should this game be submitted for him.

In regard to the current AltMetaMVL discussion this is probably how this case would be treated however I do want to point out a slight concern here. A game "fits the criteria" simply by being the correct size within the proper dates and the proper win. In the case of a All Victory round all wins are proper. Basically what this means is that very few of the defined settings can really be verified. We all know this and this is fine. We all trust in the honor system and no that no one would intentionally submit something with different settings except for the occasional mistake in missing one of the setting.

However, if we are to allow the automatic submission of a game that "obviously fits the criteria" then we should encourage members to not submit games under their MVL character that could be mistaken for a league game. I do remember FireBender played a test game at suicidal during a round that he scored a very impressive 0 year victory. Certainly there was nothing wrong with this and he had made no attempt to submit the game that was done under different settings then the current round but the size was the same and it could have been mistaken as a game that "fits the criteria" if no one knew any better. I think that in the future if we allow the submission of a game that "fits the criteria" then people should also take care to not submit games with setting that differ from the current rounds if they could be confused with a game with the current rounds settings.

I'll add this comment to the AltMetaMVL thread as well but I thought I would mention this here as well.

None of these scenarios may actually take place, but i did want to be prepared for the worst. I would not try to submit TGE's game until it was clear that he missed the deadline, but this could be a good example of how the Altmeta system might work if someone doesn't make it in time to pick their game.
If BluntBlade does respond or shows then we will have to take the non-submittal if he doesn't get a game in, which at last check he hadn't started yet since he didn't have a character created. Of course he's welcome to continue on the A team if he so chooses, but I and probably the league would just like to hear a yay or nay from him.

We'll see what happens and I think I do need to be a little more active of a captain or this might have not happened. It was just so quiet from everyone after the beginning of this round I didn't really notice he had vanished

By all means mate. You do have a way with words....

Indeed, he may very will show up so any action would only be after the deadline.

If BluntBlade does respond or shows then we will have to take the non-submittal if he doesn't get a game in

I still believe that the lack of a character speaks volumes. If he, after Mumble pm creates a character and submits a game, then fine, no harm done. But if there is no response i think his inaction is enough to call this a "non-register" not a non-submital. Calling it a non-submital would result in your averages still be done by 5, Blunt being still a member. By taking him from the league altogether, at least until he shows up(if) then you are not disadvantaged.

Btw, anyone seen Vilgan or Elwood?

EDIT: I think we could afford to get a concession if only one of those players were a no-show but if both... we'd be a player down and suffer the -2 penalty.

Thats the long version for insta-lose. The same thing happened to Team D in Round 2. They came last...

Hey guys I just was checking in and saw you were "worried" about me. My wife is pregnant and was recently put on bed rest so I have had to do everything for her. That being said I should be able to get a game uploaded before the deadline. I apologize to Team A for the delay. I do appreciate the opportunity to participate in the league being a newcomer and all.

oh right! Great to see you BluntBlade . Glad you made it back and I understand RL can make it hard to get around to leisure activities such as this.

This is the same scenario that DethAdder was concerned about. I'd suggest that it might be a good idea to have at least one extra game by someone on your team ready to go just in case, but there still is almost a full week left. Personally I'm still in year 0 in my game.

Just to let everyone know I heard from TGE as well and he's on track to get his game in. All is well with The A team now it seems.
Yes first one and thanks.

Congratulations! Fortunately, as I found out when both of mine were very small, strategy games can easily be played one-handed during those "I'm gonna cry unless you hold me constantly" times. My wife got concerned about the amount of time I spent holding our first in front of the computer. I gave her my best Dr. Evil look and said "But who's going to take over the galaxy when I'm gone?"

Elwood was active on the core quite recently but i have not seen Vilgan around.

I actually thought this the moment DA pm'ed me, so instructed him to start a game then, just in case.

Excellent, glad this is working out. Now only if we could here from The Doombringer too.

I gave her my best Dr. Evil look and said "But who's going to take over the galaxy when I'm gone?"

How much time is left?
Since I'm pretty sure the deadline is near(or not). I'm leaving this submission here that if I'm not able to complete another game until the deadline then this is to count as my submission.

Score: 6120
Race: Thalan Empire
Years: 4
Character: General Hawkins
Difficulty: Painful
All settings as specified for Round 4.

Is there still no news on Vilgan or Elwood?
I noticed variances in people's submission with regards to Difficulty setting. I noticed that a setting of at least challenging was used. I didn't see a requirement listed or did I miss something. I just want to make sure I play under the right difficulty setting.

You should play at your regular difficulty. The MVL is for folks of all experience levels and so your normal level is what you should play. There is a slight presumption that folks will tend to raise their difficulty over time but there's absolutely no pressure for you to play at a level that uncomfortable for you.

A conditional submission? I don't know if we've ever done this before. I don't particularly mind but it would get real confusing real quickly if a lot of people did this. We should probably have a ruling from Neilo on this and discuss whether this is something we should consider allowing for future rounds.

A far as the end of the round Neilo posted that in the OP.
