The "Big One"

The "Big One"

Well, I've been toying around some with Gigantic maps, with max stars, planets, and habitible planets on Suicidal diffidulty level. 9 opponents. 8 minor civs.

One of the biggest keys concepts I'm seeing on this style on map is sustainable development. Kyrnn seem to be good at this, but I still end up being at 40-50 planets compared to 60-70 average for the A.I. by the time the colony rush is over.

Any ideas or tips?

Thanks For the info Purge!

I must be honest in that I don't have the time to play gigantic galaxies and usually play on fairly small galaxies. This, I would guess, may make the colonization strategy more difficult. I stop at, say, 4 colonies, and my opponet gets 6 or 7. It's only 2 or 3 planets, but its almost 50% of my empire, especially if there are good planets. I suppose when you are at say 70 and the enemy has 80, there isn't as much of a gap, lol.

Wait... you're trying to do this in a game with Dread Lords as an opponent? Hmm, methinks I will be waiting a bit longer than anticipated...

ghostwes... there is a reason it's called Galactic Civilization 2: DREAD LORDS! dread lords are on every map i play on.

In the campaign, yes. However, that your strategy works in the campaign doesn't really say much for the strategy in general, though I'll be surprised if it works at all, frankly. Basically, the proof is in the pudding screenshots, which I eagerly await.

Here's your image, told you i would get it. not even on a perfect map.

choke on you own words ghostwes, never doubt me, i never lie.

I don't see any way in which this is practical.

You have apparently built 32 small ships and one colony ship by 8 Feb 2225.

You have one uncolonized planet. That means you are using 32 ships to keep the AI from colonizing one planet. You could easily have just built one more colony ship instead, and for a lot less cash. And this represents one of the more practical layouts for this (in the corner on a small map). If you had just built two colony ships, you could have the planet in your space and the one in Drengin space (visible on the map) instead for significantly less cost.

I think you might find this even more prohibitively extravagant on the current revision of DL. Also all the AIs would have produced more colony ships by this point in time on Suicidal under the current rev of either DA or DL. They quick buy them pretty much every turn until their starting cash is gone and they would have already claimed all the free planets by this date.

No forget it. sorry... i couldnt recreate the same event i made 5 months ago, i felt presured, so i surfed the net for these so called 'cheats' and temperarly used them to make this.

i have no excute for my actions...

LostHero, dumb arse of the galaxy.

See, LostHero, i told you how unpractical it is, but you would'nt listen. Save me doing a huge quote, but what Purge said above is just the tip of the iceberg on how bad an idea this is, and he would know....

The fact that you posted complete utter crap and then once you got called on it, you made forgeries kinda lends me to reinforce all my previous posts and opinions of you....but.

Kudos for having the guts to post that you faked the whole thing, not sure if you did that out of guilt or you thought someone might have caught you out, but either way you owned up and didn't have to, so you stand redeemed.

Nearly...

You know, your idea might work with these settings,

Cakewalk
Large - Gigantic
1 or 2 civs

You could easily corner off "your" part of the galaxy, not that that's anything to brag about considering the level. But if you still have faith in your "wall" then try this,

Tough
Large - Gigantic
6 to 9 civs

See how quick you go broke and how many planets you don't colonize....

Again, took some guts to stand up and say that you faked, though you will cop some shit for it still...

Moving on...........

I am officially choking on my words, LostHero. Oh wait, no, that was just me laughing!

Seriously, I'm not sure why you feel the need for such hostility when I was only asking you to prove that your strategy was viable. I guess the fact that it was not viable made you read my words with more sting than I intended.

In any case, you'll get no reprieve from me -- you cheated and you lied. Admitting to it after the fact will get you no extra points with me.

Quite ridiculous, really.

Nice retort Ghost. With Wheel gone are you putting your hand up for the job?

Wheel? Job? Not sure what you mean, sorry. I'm still relatively new to the forums.

Neilo, no one needs to be recruited. Wheels burn of their own accord.

Hi!

He's 16, and a computer expert (at least he claims to be). I had twice a 16 years old at home, so I know what that means: oversensitivity squared, and social skill square rooted.
At least he admitted he cheated, and appologized. That IS something positive.

I'm sorry, you all probably hate me by now (you have all right to be). i didn't mean to sound hostal, typical me i often promise things i think i can deliver. i spent hours apon hours trying to get that thing to work but to no effect, i then sort the easy way out. i am very good with computers by the way (not expert). i dont normaly lie. is there any way i can earn your tust again?

Bad LostHero, bad! Oreo's sending your share of the previously promised pan galactic gargle blaster to Vogsphere. He said he's sending a box neckties to your home. (See the Hitchiker's of the galaxy empire thread for clarification). You should spend more of your game time posting victories on the metaverse.
People rely on these threads for ideas from other players. When you post an idea you take on the responsibility of a mentor to newer players. I've made mistakes on my postings. I admit them and correct them or provide accurate information.
You earn people's trust with your deeds, not with your words. I think an appropriate punishment would be that you take a time out for 1 minute per year of your age sitting in a quiet corner of your home, no distractions, and think about what you did. Then I want you to write a post about proper mentorship, a historical figure who earned trust by his or her actions rather than words, and a viable colonization strategy.
At any rate STAR, it's only a game, don't sweat the small stuff. Live and learn and move on.

Why should I hate you? For a piece of information I regarded wrong the first time I've seen it? C'mon, for a hate you'd need to do something that would really hurt me.

What you lost is credibility. When you'll post something about the game, and someone who remembers this topic will be reading it, he'll say "Ah, that guy..." You'll need to work HARD to gain the trust back. But teenagers have some discount here. At least from me, who had two.

ha ha that was hillarious and neilo you also look like your after wheels job and lost hero i have read most of your posts and stood behind you. However that was the funniest strategy I have ever seen or heard of in my life. thats as good as the guy who tries to fit a 454 into a honda civic.

Hee hee yeah, just look at the reputation on here I've earned. I'm "the guy who refuses to submit any games to metaverse." That must be why no one seems to understand that all my strategies came to me straight from God.

my strategies came to me straight from God.

Like......turning space dust into hammers, and the parting of the asteroid field to avoid the 1 movement penalty and not to mention the walking across Yor space at 10pc a week!!!

I heard your first colony ship was even a direct replica of Noah's Ark! Wow. It was a failed mission though, the designer thought, hey, this thing don't need be water tight it's not gonna flood in space!

As you could imagine his idea about having open decks for the space breeze didn't go down to well!!

i will try my hardest from know on and i WILL tell the truth, but dont expect me to sit in the conner. (shivers) there are spiders there.

Anyway there is a stratagy i use often and it does work, create a large battle fleet ,lots of troop ships and a few escourt ships. send you battle fleet to engage the enemy i an 'Out of the way' place, the enemy will atomaticly send most ships to destroy this fleet. whilest they go of to attack you send you transports to take most the enemy planets. use you escourt ships to destroy any ship that chooses to engage the transports and or is orbaiting a planet. will you may lose a large fleet you will capture most you enemies planets leaving them to regroup and plan an offensive.

hope this helps.

"My plans are always practical, it's just the laws of reality that get in my way."

I think that under certain circumstances, and only then, it is useful to blockade off a single planet. Mind you, single planet.

As I'm still down, playing on normal, I won't assume that I have expert knowledge of the strategies, but my approach to war is more Guderian style ("Nicht kleckern, klotzen!"), gather a mass of reasonably agile ships and steamroll over a chosen enemy sector. Then send in transports while your main force already has moved on, cutting of reinforcements. Since planets can only build one ship at a time, small numbers by each planet can maintain space superiority.

Make peace once you don't have any transports left in your first wave and consolidate.

I would only try a two-pronged attack when I have two industrial centres (several high-output planets) that can build up a sizeable fleet each.

But then again, I'm still trying to get up to 'tough' so I may be wrong.

Or he downloaded the game (think about it, he is a 16 year old computer wiz!) and he cannot install the latest patch because he does not know where to download it, because he cant get it from stardock central, because the product is not registered !! Also metaverse requires a valid serial code, and the one they provide from the bittorrent is already used, and this guy might not know where to get the keygens
