I'm curious if anyone has problems with non conquest wins

I'm a new player, my roommate has this game and has been letting me try it after he explained the gameplay. I was a fan of MoO and I use to play games similar to it for fun years ago. I decided to give this game a try and I love it but it's really lacking in some areas. I've only played 2 complete games(small galaxies, low difficultly) so far and I've been trying to start a game where I would win through either influence or tech but it seems impossible to play a peaceful race in this game. The last two games which were on lower difficulties I ended up winning through military might because either war got declared on me or i got dragged in to a war even though I told the altarans I didn't want to help.

I've restarted this 3rd attempted about 8-9 times in hopes of a peaceful game where I trade and maybe win through influence or tech.I usually play for about 100 turns before either all or most of the AI are demanding money and tech every other turn. I tried building a strong military making me a target with teeth but the AI never seems deterred by such a defensive build up. I give money to try and build my relationship and it seems to work for a time but it I have civilizations that I paid off last turn just declare war on me. I put the races on random so it's not a question of picking the wrong races for the most part all of them are warmongering.

I'm currently playing the Terran Alliance and difficultly is set to normal and I try to play a good alignment. I play in a large galaxy with 3 random opponents and my military is usually the 2nd or 3rd biggest despite that I frequently get declared war on even after paying them not kill me. I'm thinking that there is some basic strategy I'm failing to understand and implement.

I hope I can get some tips for this because I like the game but I'm not going to buy it myself until I'm convinced that there isn't a serious flaw in the game mechanics that will make my enjoyment short lived. I remember how disappointed I was after I bought MoO 3, I don't want to waste my time and money on a another bad game of this type.

Peaceful is hard without Alliances, and even then you'll find that the races that don't share your ethic will turn against your alliance if they ever become stronger than you.

Trying to play galactic peacekeeper is suicidal as only the very weak will like you.

Playing too neutral and just researching/trading, on the other hand usually backfires too, with someone else taking over the galaxy. Basically real estate is crucial to winning in the long run.

I just got an influence win on normal with the humans. 9 players and tons of minor races helped a lot. Early on I colonized then researched diplomacy while they where easy to get and switched back and forth from researching diplomacy research and improvement techs as I needed them. I didnt build a warship either. I trade techs back and forth for planets and make sure to trade one tech to everyone at the same time for the most they will give me. I take ships planets cash and more techs this way. The ships I get are enough to guard my planets. Its important to trade the tech to everyone at once even if you really dont want their ships or techs because you want to keep your enemies balanced against each other for when you send them to war. I got trade early on from a minor and began sending freighters to everyone, making it so I could build anything I wanted after a few years. I have been sending two other races at whoever has the largest military and spending what I can on spies too. It seems the spies help me stay out of the fray and its a great way to disable the warmonger right as two other races declare war. Later in the game it got hairy when others started forming alliances but by then I could always give a planet away for peace or hold out with what I had and talk someone else into fighting my enemies. Even though my rating was low the whole game I was far richer than any other race and due to the heavy colonizing races and the warmongers selling me their least developed but still very nice planets I had way more real estate. Its definantly easier to do this with super dominator on a huge map with tons of other civs, so grab the terrans and paly on a large map. You will need ships though but you dont neccesarily have to buy them and you will find you have all the weapon techs everyone else has after you get all the diplomacy techs built up. Also you spend a lot of time building up your pop and balancing your morale out but it was really fun to see a civ give me a few planets for peanuts and always knowing I could mass a huge fleet of uber ships any time I needed to. Another tip is when you see you reputation with someone is low give a few civs a bunch of the ships you traded off them in exchange for attacking the guy who doesnt like you so hes too busy to bother with you. Good luck, its definantly possible.

Playing a Normal difficulty, Neutral alignment, Huge Galaxy, Very Fast Research with 9 oponents and the Drengin are my neighbors. Went immediately for trade routes and as much diplomacy as possible. A bazillion turns later and i am currently toping all of my research trees, never been attacked by anyone and most of the game i had absolutely nothing to defend myself with. Been expanding my influence all game long, getting a warning once from the Torians for placing an influence SB right in the lawn. Kept on pushing them but they still didn't move my way. Only allied with humans and altarans just to see if it was worth it. Could've won a tech victory long ago but decided to make it last.

Not sure how much did it help, but in the middle game i asked the Drengin to attack the Drath (2nd rank), the Drath to attack the Drengin and the Arcean(3rd rank) to attack the Drengin. This may have tamed the Drengin a bit because they were already at war with 2 powers and had trade from me... what would be the point of attacking me then?

If you're looking for an Influence Victory, i suggest you read the following:

With this setup i've never had any trouble getting an influence victory. Might need to up the difficulty a bit.
