How is that possible?

How is that possible?

I just started a new game, Gigantic, 9 races on Challenging. I rushed five scouts, then one Colony ship to start my first colony, after my local version of Mars. Shortly after I ran into the Krynn and looking at his stats I notice that he already has eight colonies up and running. I short while later, I have another colony ship ready, and I check the Krynn and he now has thirteen colonies!!

How can that even be possible? There's no way he could have built all those colony ship in that time, and I really can't see him being that lucky with the anomalies. If it's because of the anomalies, those really should be nerfed because that's riciculous. I'm beaten before I even get started.

And how can he even support that many right off the bat? His economy should be completely bankrupt having that many brand new planets to develop.

I think there was a 5000BC anomaly in DL, but it might only have been 2500. Isn't there a 2500 in DA?

I think there may be a very rare 2500bc anomaly in DA.

Well I'm glad to see you've figured out most of what you were doing wrong.

Well I'm doing better in the colony rush anyway, though I'm still falling behind in tech. If I'm not number one, I'm usually second or third, behind races like the Thalen and Krynn. It's somewhat understandable with those guys given their bonuses. I usually cringe when I see the Thalen in the game, their cheap factories means they're able to crank out colony ships left, right and centre. I'm not that worried about the tech really because I can always trade for some of them, and once my colonies start gearing up, I should catch up.

And yeah most of the time financing ships can ruin you but if done right and with strategic goals in mind you can put yourself further ahead then without it. A lot of times I use it late in the game when I'm probably going to win in the next 50 turns or so anyway. Once you become supreme ruler of the universe no one cares that you are 1000BC in debt.

I tried fininancing once at the start, the first option with the shortest pay back, and my empire ground to a halt. I had to turn my production slider down so far I wasn't able to build anything. Last time I try that one! From now on it's "pay as you go."

Planetary bonuses are given out in an attempt by the game engine to *balance* out the map. There have been several posts about the *whys* of the random generator from Frogboy. Normally if you start out with a 300% or 700% on your home world you can bet there are no other really good planets within your starting range or you are completely surrounded by AI empires. A difficult position to be in but by no means impossible.

That's a good thing to keep in mind. Also a good way of having them in the game. A +700% manufacturing tile can certainly be overpowering.

The highest is 1000BC. Still 2 of those and you are set.

And still, I never seem to have much luck with those. Like I said, my guy always seems to end up on the other side of the galaxy.

There might be but in the anomalies.xml file it only lists up to 1000 BC. So may be a hard coded thing or its in a different file. I didn't check DL to see if there is one there. And to be honest I could have sworn I've gotten 2500 BC before. Ah well. This is what happens after you've played your 100th game. Things start to blur together .

I never shoot for being 1st in anything other then economy at the start of the game. I figure if I'm sitting somewhere in the middle of the pack after the colony rush is over I'm doing pretty well. I'm not so weak that the bullies are going to start demanding BC and I'm not so powerful that the other empires are going to start banding together to thwart my plans.

Once most of the galaxy is colonized I start looking for was to expand my empire. Not always militarily either. My mid - late game strategy varies depending on where everyone is at the end of the rush. Also who I'm up against causes me to vary as well. All I know is if I'm tops in economy I can normally handle any other twists that occur during the course of the game.

1.000 prizes are quite common. Sometimes you get the 500, 250, 100, and even the "Today was my lucky day" 1 award.

They do help a lot. That is why I rush the colony ships. Otherwise I would end without money. I rush the customized colony ships while I research Sensors, and when I get sensors I build the survey explorers and start making cash. Meanwhile the colony ships are on their way already.

I have seen this once, and i make about 4 to 5 survey scouts. So i get a great share of the anomalies out there. It was far more common on DL of course.

use customized cargo survey ships as early scouts. It will fulfill two roles at the same time
