GalCiv II : DA vs DL questions

help!

Hi, After looking for a game like this for sometime and seeing the good reviews this game has recieved I thought I would pick up a copy.

I am however a little overwelmed. I would like to start off with the Dreadlords campaign but am a little concerned at how much it differs from the expantion in the way of content and new features.

So I guess my question is, if I start the Dreadlord campaign will it have the features implemented with Dark Avataar? (new graphics, asteroid mining, tech requirements for colonisation ect) and if not, where would you recommend a complete noob starts Should I just jump straight into dark avataar?

One more thing, I currently do not have the internet at home where the game is installed, and I cant seem to find anywhere to manually download and apply the latest patch. The only one I can find on the main sight is only version 1.40x Does this mean I cannot get 1.50x? If thats the case I will be extremely dissapointed.

Thanks

No it won't, you'll only get those with the Dark Avatar. Personally I never bothered with the campaigns, I just jumped into the sand box mode, as everyone seems to call it. You might want to consider that as well. It will give you access to all the features and nuances right off the bat. As I understand it, the campaign is sometimes limited as to what you have avialable. I certainly noticed that checking out the first Dreadlords campaign. I won it without really or understanding anything.

I'm afraid you're out of luck there. The patch is only available through Stardock Central and you need an internet connection in order to access it. If you don't have your own connection there is a way you can get the file on another machine and transfer it to yours, if you have a friend/family member who will let you install the software. From there you'll be able to activate through email later. You give them some code, they'll send you a file you stick in your folder.

Or you could download the patch else where and move it to yours. There should be and .exe file avaible to download.

I love the game, but honestly... the campaign sucks. It's very repetitive, and in each mission you have to build up your worlds all over again. The story is almost non-existant, and the videos are a bit pants. Sandbox is the way to play.

Somehow I feel the campaign would have been better if turned into one giant scenario played on one large map, with events that trigger when certain planets fall etc.

At least then you would avoid the loading times between missions, the repetitive research and improvement phases.

Anyone know how to get the cheat codes to work for Dark Avatar? I know this question may have already been answered somewhere else on here, but I can't find it. I entered the "cheat" after the quotes of the intial program name to find out that it is invalid and doesn't work. If you enter it with the old game, it just plays the Dread Lords version and not the Dark Avatar. So whats the deal?

Ok, thanks for the replies everyone. Although I applaud stardock for having the guts to do away with copy protection such as securerom, Im pretty dissapointed there seems to be no conceivable way for me too patch a game I legitimately installed and paid goodmoney for. Its an utter disgrace when piracy protection harms legitimate users.

Worse is the fact that once I installed the older manual patch, it appears to have rendered my game unplayable. Now every time I try to start the game it tells me my CD key is invalid. I have tried entering this multiple times with no luck (gold edition of the game).

The only solution seems to reinstall the game and play the release version...

Not cool.

The version of Dread Lords in the Gold Edition is already newer than the last published standalone patch.

First of all, why are you trying to install the 1.4X manual patch onto the 1.5 Dreadlords game that comes with the Gold edition? There's no need to update anything with the Gold, the only way to do so is online.

Second, if you're trying to start a Dark Avatar game from that point, keep in mind that it has it's own serial code that isn't readily apparent. Normally the key from the disk will work to activate everything, but I've run into a stuation where it wouldn't, and I had to enter in Dark Avatar's unique code. And the only way to know what it is, is to request your serial codes from Stardock via email. It's not listed anywhere on the Gold edition package, disk, manual or game. Go figure!

Ok, that clears things up a little, thanks.

I didnt realise the gold version of the game was already up to the latest build. Strikes me as a little strange it would allow me to install a patch which is essentially rolling back...

I still think there should be some manual way to patch the game however....

It would just be common sense to assume that the latest release would be up to date. With any game I've ever owned, the expansion pack has always included the latest patches for the original game.

Ok whats the deal? I did the cakewalk got the madalian, then I did a normal game with 3 PC AI players all in the normal and rantom, used the normal map and went all the way to the end got what it called a "Technological Victory" which basicly said that my race and all the other races turnecd into energy after it showed a spinning doublle DND Double helix turn into energy and then it shows all thes little energy orabs coaming from all the planets. But! and here is the rub, the only medalian I get online in the metavers is the "Cakewalk" One so whats the deal?

LOL, ok, never mind it showed up when I posted; hmmm wonder if it is set up that way to give it to you *after* you come and bitch about it, lol.

I liked the dreadlords campaign in DL.

The truely fun part was that you are restricted to one weapon type which the dreadlords shield against! this makes it allot more challenging, you won't get much of a fight out of the dreadlords any other way.

You haven't actually submitted any scores--you need to play via the Metaverse button on the main menu (not New Game), and submit your score when prompted at the end of the game.

You get Evil and Cakewalk medals without submitting any games at all simply because your average alignment and difficulty are 0 (having submitted no games).

Tnx, another question is that I have the cakewalk and evil in here but on my charcter and account only the cakewalk any idea why? Isn't the metaverse an online game? I wanted to pratice offline until I can at the very least beat the AI before playing real people that will most likely kick my butt. Oh have you ever played a game called BRE (Baron Relms Elete) back in the bbs days? Although it was a text only game it is almost exactly like this would be if it were text only.

PLEASE, give me a break, I had a freind before who was into text only games - wathching him play that crap inspired thoughts of suicide if i ever degraded myself to that level of existance!

No there is no multiplayer.

I am not so sure I want to continue this or not. I almost liked the text BRE of this at least that way I didn't *see* my butt getting beat ;o)

I am still trying to figure out what happned to my one victory and it was a technological victory where my rase and everyone else turned into beings of light? About my luck that because I didn't know I had to use the metaverse button that game probably didn't count on here and it was my only victory;o(

hey, Kryo how come your race doesn't show in here like my custom does? Shame about no multi thought; because they could do it like bre and with the graphics it would be a blast; but just like bre everyone would only get one turn per day or up to a max of 4 turns per day in betweene you build up your stuff and then launch in this games case intergelatic; because this is a galaxy type game; but with a BRE sort of attachment or update it could go intergelactic!! LOL I see a BEG and S in tags struck my post out, te he he

The medals I have showing are all from DA games I posted before DA was even released, playing as Korath. For some reason they ended up displaying as Drengin. I'm not entirely sure what happened there, but it's not a big deal to me so I haven't bothered with it.

Another Q, if you don't mind, I had GC2 Dread Lords, now is this one befor or after GC2 Dark Avitar? I also noticed it cost $10 more at walmarts then online here, whats up with that?
Dread Lords is the base game, and Dark Avatar is an expansion pack whose story takes place afterwards.

Stores are free to set their own prices, so if you're curious about why they're charging more, they'd be the ones to ask

There's more cost involved in getting the game to your local Walmart than Stardock shipping it out themselves. There's going to be at least one middleman, probably more, getting a small piece of the action. AFAIK Stardock doesn't deliver straight to the stores, they deal with distributors who do that for them. And sometimes they'll deal with sub-distibutors.

This is not entirely accurate in the sense that a producer of a product - in this case Stardock, will usually not wan't to undercut their wholesale buyers.

But that won't stop some wholesale buyers from being a little more expensive at the retail end just out of sheer greed.

I think my game hiccupped; because I did all the yellow techs and it said "Cutural Conquest" ;but it kept going and then I don't know how but all at once every star had planets all round then and the planets didn't belong to anyone and most of them were up in the 25' and 26's, then I took all those planets, well I got a screen shot if you want to see it; because I sure don't know how that happned; because I had killed everyone except for the humand and I sent over 50 attacks each with 2k troups using a tradational and the earth survived and actuly it would not even let me attack it at all my ships just sat there in orbit. I killed off every one else, then all those extra stars and planets popped up and it was just me and the earth so I tool all the planets and then I was tiard so I just did a tech Vic and that one worked; but I would like to hvae see what the cutural vic looked like in the end game.
