7 Best & 7 Worst PC Games

7 Best & 7 Worst PC Games

As I win several games on the tough level (in this case GC2), I begin to get bored (no reflection on the excellent GC2). As with all fine games, Chess, Poker, Talonsoft series, after a while I look forward to the next generation of new PC Games.

While waiting, I like to discuss how we gamers like our PC games. Sometimes I learn of a game I have not heard about & will enjoy playing.

I wonder what our finest & worst game lists include.

I begin. I recognize that my choices will not necessarily be your choices.

The Best

1. Talonsoft military series (West Front Elite) etc. All turnbased. Verbs are not needed here. Needed more programming & army groupings were often too large & ai/programming was lacking. The artwork was brilliant.

2. Age of Empires 1 & 2. RTS that was balanced & worked. The later Age games were unbalanced & therefore unplayable by me. Additionally, RTS is not my faorite genre.

3. Chessmaster series.

4. Myst # 1 & Syberia 1 & 2. Too many puzzles had nothing to do with the plot. Artwork was brilliant.

5. The latest Hoyle Casino. Finaly got the rules in Texas Holdum right.

6. Hearts of Might & Magic 4. It worked

7. Tropico. Poor Fidel & Che. Nice artwork, music. After you developed 1 island, the game got repetitious.

The Worst

1. Paradox games. All. They have yet to produce a game. What they release is always bug ridden. Shortcuts, only hire one blind programmer at $1.50 an hour. Don't like the conquer the world stuff. Latest Europa 3 has no historical events;-Need I say more?

2. Totalwar. Shogun was decent; went downhill from there. Don't like the conquer the world stuff. I realize that others have higher opinion of Totalwar. The only opinion that counts on this planet - is yours.

3. Balders Gate. Beautiful artwork, but my heroes & heroines kept dying. Never made it to town of Balders Gate. It was the best of the hack & Slashes.

4. MOO3

5. Lords of the Realm 3. #2 had unbalanced economy that ruined a promising game. #3 had some brilliant concempt changes, but the $budget$ ran out & LOTR3 was released unfinished.

6. Civilwar Generals 1 & 2. They couldn't master the simple art of having units SHOOT. They only pushed, or charged. Had potential.

7. The whole genre of shooters.

These are only partial lists. The wife hates all my games. She thinks life is about hard work, responsibility, courage, & properly raising our kids. I love her, but she's not perfect. I'm interested in your favorites/worsts. Your choices will reveal much about your personality.

Best games I've played (not in any particular order).

1. GalCiv 2
2. FarCry
3. Morrowind
4. Half-Life 1
5. Master of Magic
6. Civilization II
7. Star Wars: Tie Fighter
8. X2: The Return
9. Unreal

Worst Games:

1. MOO3
2. Civilization III - Due to the 512 city limit, my games ususally crashes in the 1800's
3. Rise of Nations
4. Ultima VIII

Can't think of any other game I hated.

Best

Alpha Centauri – it has depth, amazing innovation, and terrific atmosphere. I actually cared when Morgan betrayed me, or Yang went on a rampage. Hands down - #1. The AI needs help, but as has been mentioned already it is great for 1999. Terrific for multiplayer, too. SF genre at its best. Too bad there will probably never be a remake since it is caught in legal limbo.

MOO2 – still play occasionally, lots of fun, first multiplayer I can remember (even if it was a tad unstable).

BG1&2: innovative, good characterization, nice game play.

SimCity (various versions) – the ultimate sandbox mode, lots of options.

GalCiv 2 – GalCiv 1 turned into shelfware very quickly, but GalCiv2 is so appealing that it will likely make it to my long-term list. I am very impressed with Stardock’s performance on this one: clear, focused, and firing on all cylinders (see comment below on MOO3). My only reservation is that I don’t empathize with any race (see comments on AC, above); the emotional hook isn’t there - yet.

Space Empires IV – lots of creativity, good flexibility, perfect for mods. Too bad its sequel is going the way of MOO3.

Birth of the Federation – has its limitations, but for some reason I like it.

Worst

Any first person shooter game (DOOM? Ack.)

Almost any RT game

MOO3 – I really wanted to like this game. I really did. There were so many good ideas, but they were buried under awful execution and good ideas run amok. Obviously no one was in control of this fiasco. Very sad.

I never noticed your problem with civ3. What i thought ruined civ3 was the complete destruction of the orbital world - what a dissaster! biggest backwards step in gaming ever!!!!

@Wargazmo
Yeah I remember Twinsen's adventure, I've got a copy of it in fact. Haven't been able to get it to run under XP
But I also seem to recall something, Twinsen's Odyssey. Is that a different game or am I just misremebering?

@Thervold
I had the same experience with Betrayal at Krondor, those books were pretty good, but once I got really far into it (like the 8th I'd read of his) the wriiting seemed to get to repetitive, I'm sure if I went back and read it again it would be fresh and new and good. If you like Feist you should check out another series that I believe he co-wrote with Janny Wurts, the War of Light and Shadow series the first book being "Curse of the the Mistwraith"

I'm really liking this thread, its helping me to remember a lot of the great games I've played over the years!

Speaking of remembering, there is one old game i played that was brilliant but i cannot remember the name??

Ok let me describe it, turn based but with reactive movement (units with movement points left can shoot off turn).

The story is that one bad ass race has enslaved 2 other races, trying to capture a new planet Earth want's. They sucker Earths offensive space fleet to destcuction but the slower troop transports servive and invade the world.

You lead the invasion force to defeat the three races starting with the weakest race.

You achieve objectives in each time limited mission to gain more recources and technology for future missions and to strengthen your home base.

Does anyone remember what it's called??

Just because no one's mentioned it, I'll give my top 1:

System Shock 2

Looking forward to Bioshock, but I don't expect I'll have the system to run it for many a moon!

Odyssey was the sequel, not a bad game but I never played it through - I can't remember why but I just preferred the original, the soundtrack to the second one wasn't quite as good as the first either.

hmmm

Best:
1. X-com: UFO Defence - just amazing, there are new games without some of the options and features from this
2. Heroes of Might and Magic 3, 4 was meh. 5 is a nice combo of good thigns from both with some new additions
3. Jagged Alliance 2
4. Warzone 2100 - very unrated or not known at all, very nice 3D for it's time, ability to totaly customize units plus loads of researching and building options
5. Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
6. Wing Commander series - maybe not "all" of them but the vast majority are quite good
7. MOO2 - do I have to explain? I didn't think so.

Worst:
1. Lord of the Realm 3 - I really just didn't like it nearly as much as LOTR2
2. MOO3 - blah
3. Cops 2170 - TBS game sort of similar to Fallout/JA2...don't waste your time
4. erm...hmmm.... Honestly the worst games I've played in awhile were mostly found on console systems. I tend to be fairly selective when it comes to PC games because I"ll see a console game and be like..wow that looks great. Buy...play...oh my god this sucks...trade in. But PC games are usually much better.

Yeah System Shock 2! oi...my best games list would be huge if I kept listing fav games. Total Annihlation and others and gah.

I myself am very much waiting for Bioshock...Also for those interested in Bioshock you should check out a game called Mass Effect that I believe is being developed by the same people (not 100% sure on that) and it look incredible.

So is HOMM5 one of your best games, or is it just nice? I'm thinking of buying it. I felt the same way as you about HOMM3 and 4.

I know y'all are posting on a turn-based strategy site, but I still say that Unreal: Tournament is the greatest PC game of all time. Epic continually releases the best games out there. I mean, Gears of War? The best video game I've ever played. Period. That's what a shooter is supposed to be.

Am I having funnn!!!??

I'm enjoying all the fine responses. One of them encouraged me to purchase Neverwinter Nights "Diamond." It is on sale with the original game, the 3 expansions, & all the patches - $20..  I was told by the store manager to avoid Neverwinter II. - which is same advice I received by a responder to this thread.

It' snowing (heavily); so I'm enjoying a perusal of this happy forum. I am staying home, playing with my 2 computers (esp. my RIGG) - as I occasionally glance at the pristine beauty outside my extra-large window (have the desk & RIGG right up next to said window). Only sex is better (usually). Oh! Merry Xmas!

Finished reading Victor Hugo's "Ninety Three." About the French Revolution & Love & Honor. Beautifully written; like reading poetry. My dad could have read it in its' original French.

5 great ones in no order
Balders Gate I & II
Neverwinters Night I
Blitzkrieg (all)
Gal Civ 2
Fallout I & II

5 good ones in no order
SimCity
Diablo (all)
Starcraft I & II
Mech Commander I & II
Railroad Tycoon by popcap games (all)

5 worst ones in no order
Heros of might and magic (all)
Neverwinter nights 2
Medal of honor (all)
Dungeon lords
Moto mania

I still have some older games that I play on my win 98 system that I didn't list but all of the above work on win xp.
the worst of the worst has to be Neverwinter nights 2...it is just a 50 dollar piece of crap...nothing works right and it has so many bugs that I am surprised Atari isn't facing some kind of fraud lawsuit over this piece of garbage.

My all time favorite for pc game is gal civ 2 for sheer amount of time I spend playing and enjoying day after day. The only game I have on my laptop.

Evil Stormbringer,

My children would agree with your inference, (that I am not necessarily "OK"). But, since I began perusing this forum, 4" of snow has fallen & the Pine copse I look out upon is stunning.

I do not know if I can make it out to our local pub this evening (depends on my best buddy picking me up in his 4wheel drive), but with or without the help of mankind's best solution (alcohol), I aim, as with Barry Fitzgerald in "The Big Man" (I believe I have the title correct) - starring John Wayne, to "talk a little treason."

Of course, if they (one of our nation's 16 secret agencies) arrest me & send me to Guantanamo (the one part of Cuba I don't want to visit), I will confess right away -to anything!

I am just having some fun; which is why I am a Gamer-it's fun; I do not mean to rain on your parade, or upset you in any way.

I am an admirer of Ralph Nader, & Buenaventura Durruti, & Lev Bronstein, have lectured on Tom Jefferson & Tom Paine, Abraham Lincoln, among others (hint as to what I do for a living on the rare occasions when I actually work for a living).

In friendship!

Long live the Anarchist Republic!

Best Games (for me)
Ultima I-VII

Wing Commander

Longbow II (realistic helicopter Sim) - I actually joined a clan for this game and flew around in carefully scripted multiplayer co-op missions. It was awesome!

Civ Series

X-Wing series

Street Fighter II

Age of Empires series...

Wost Games I've played:
Ultima IX
Alien v. Predator for Commodore 64
Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles for PC (1991 or so, trust me, it was bad - EGA graphics)

Nothing you have said has rained on my parade nor upset me. I unfortunately feel the need to 'express' some sort of verbal relief from time to time. Comments on treason would be the very last thing in the world to upset me, so by all means, express away and enjoy your vantage point among other things.

edit: Although comments like this...

are a very good way to incite me to riot.

Some of my favorites:

Final Fantasy XIII
System Shock 2
Tie Fighter
Civilization II
Age of Empires II
Homeworld
Counter Strike (For LAN parties)
Star Wars Galaxies - Considering the number of hours I put into it, I must have liked it.

Games less liked include

Warcraft III
Riven
Civilization: Call to Power

Best (these are games that, once I started playing them I couldn't stop)

Halflife1
FABLE - a real odd but original game. Amazing graphics. Dont know which genre it falls under though
Neverwinter1
BOTF
Descent 3
Earth 2150
Dungeon keeper 2
Pod Racer
Quake2
all RAILROAD TYCOONs (The 1st one for the Atari ST was awesome, included POINTS/LIGHTS control)
SHOGUN total war

All-time dogs
Neverwinter2 - (should be called "baldersGate3")
Medieval2 total war - (may be like ROME-TW - Great after patch v1.6)
Homeworld1 - too many bugs. (Fighters too stupid to go refuel in battle)
Homeworld2 - Too too too too too scripted. Watching paint dry has more stategic demands.
MYST
Elder scrolls series

Homeworld is my favorite. Mostly number one. I haven't played it in a while, but here are the things that I remember about it that made it great.

1) Fleet customization. The ability to build a fleet capital ships of hordes of fighters
2) Carriers
3) Cool weapons
4) Balanced game
5) The plain fun of watching fighters fly in formation as they strafe the enemies ships.

It's just to bad that Galciv2 doesn't have cool fleets fights that homeworld did.

My other favorite is the Halo series. They put so much stuff into it that you don't notice until you start looking into it. Things like subliminal messaging and a bunch of other stuff. It brought a whole bunch of things into the story. My favorite was the flood which resembles John Carpenter's: The Thing. But the gameplay is the best...just good allover, plus don't forget the music!

I thought civilisation 2 and civilisation call to power are the same game?

Earth 2150

Yea i played that game, although the recource used is kinda seriously dumb - like Starcraft. Basing a game on an illogical recource kinda kills it for me!

Fav: no order
Galciv II
Baulders gate
Civ IV
and X-com UFO defense. Older game ( 10yrs old) but was really cutting edge at the time.
