Show off your ship designs 2007!

Ship designs from around the world!

Last year, we had a thread in which people showed off some of the great ship designs they created with Galactic Civilizations II.

With the expansion pack adding so many new components and so much free form support, we'd love to see the cool things players create.

The cool thing in the expansion pack is now you can save your creations as templates and then assign the computer players to make use of those ships in various roles. Combined with the capability of creating your own custom opponents, now you can create your own sci-fi universe within GalCiv without modding.

Man... every page of this thread is stuffed full of awesome ships. I'll have to do some Battle of the Gods building of my own, even though I'm a huge GalCiv2 newbie.

One question: How do you select a set of custom ships to begin the game with? Do you have to make them first, and then select them when you're starting the game? (I noticed there's an option to use custom ship designs when you're fleshing out whatever race you've chosen, but for me it's always greyed out.)

Ahhh, I see!

Yeah, some of the options aren't immediately obvious.

Hi!

I just got the game last weekend and was immediately intrigued by the ship builder. For me, the challenge is not just to make nice-looking ships, but to make them simple enough that they won't give my computer problems. This is I feel my best design so far, although it's not nearly as good as any of these. It also succeeds reasonably well in the simplicity department since I only ever expect to have one in existence (it cost me nearly my whole treasury in a Battle of the Gods game). I call it... the Aquarius.

"And here, my lord, is our newest super-weapon, the Aquarius..."

Are we kidding around? No we are not!

If anyone would like to critique please feel welcome to do so.

Your wish shall be granted. I present to you... the Rigel, the Cygnus, the Aires, and the Arcturus!

The Rigel, a scout-class ship. I'm proud of the sensor array in back.

The Cygnus, a light fighter.

The Aires, a heavy fighter.

The Arcturus, a frigate. My favorite part is the engines.

Again, critique would be appreciated. Also, I'm trying to make enough ships for a ship set, and I have Scout, Fighter, Heavy Fighter, and Frigate, but I don't know what other classes there are. (I know there are Flagship, Colony Ship, Spore Ship, Troop Transport, Constructor, Freighter and Space Miner, but I think I'm missing a few for the larger hull sizes.)

Thanks!

i have designed two scouts a military one to go after anomilies and a civilan to scout territory

and there are the combat ships

The final member of our fleet, the Aldebaran. The Aldebaran uses our advanced engineering technology to support the second-largest hull in the fleet. This new size of hull we have codenamed "large".

The Aldebaran - for when you can't quite afford a Huge ship.

An ensemble photo for size comparison. From left to right: an Aires, Cygnus, Arcturus, Aquarius and Aldebaran. This showcases our current military vessels as well as GalCiv's awesome graphics.

danielost: Thanks for the compliment.
What do you mean with "stealing ships"?

Did my designs look similar to someone else's? Because I made them all on my own (that's why they suck compared to the other ones on here, except for the Aquarius). Or are you commenting on the fact that I was playing as the Terrans with the Drengin style and color scheme? That's because you can only playas the Terrans in Battle of the Gods.

Midnight, I like your noncombat ships especially, although the Terran insignias do look a bit out of place. I can never get the hang of building large-scale like that. I guess I need to practice more. Are you using Kryo's mod?

Someone took my nickname: Thanks to you too for the compliment on my designs. Regarding your question: Yes - i'm using Kryo's mod. Here and there i'm adding parts from the Collector's Edition when they fit.

I'm a new GC player and an old star trek fan. This is my first shot at a classic star trek ship of the Transport/Tug class. Here is a link to the picture from which I drew my inspiration: WWW Link

And here are some shots of my attempt. It can't hold a candle to the efforts of 95% of the ships here, but it was fun to come up with something close to the original. At some point I'll try to add the big cargo can underneath...

I decided to try my hand at a more traditional Terran design for my custom race, the Terran Legacy, presented here in the form of an AAR:

All of the industrial ships were designed during the initial colonization rush by a single state-controlled space and aeronautics corporation. They are all based around the same long fuselage design and share the same manufacturing infrastructure. This allowed for rapid construction and deployment during the earliest phases of space exploration.
--

The first defense satellites, the Whetstone network, were developed shortly after making first contact with the Legacy's nearest neighbor, the Krynn. Little more than a communications platform with some auxiliary defense lasers, the Whetstones provided enough of a show of technological sophistication to keep the belligerent Krynn at bay.
--

Within just a few years, the first true interstellar combat vessels began to emerge from the Legacy's orbital shipyards. Commissioned under the Legacy's nascent free-market system that would come to dominate this region of space, the Gladius is a scrappy, multi-purpose frigate capable of handling a variety of tasks. Although primarily a short-range defensive ship, in the coming decades it would perform admirably as a scout, escort, and even a front-line combat craft before eventually being retired to a purely orbital defense role.
--

As Legacy ships continued to explore the galaxy, making contact with the Altarians, the Korx, and the Yor, the Krynn continued to ratchet up diplomatic tensions. To face this growing threat, the Broadsword, the first true ship of the line was developed. Fast and heavily armed, fleets of these powerful cruisers would find themselves skirmishing along the Krynn border flanked by Gladius scouts. The Broadsword would prove so useful that it's design would remain in production for decades and form the backbone of the advance Legacy fleet.
--

As the war with the Krynn dragged on, the Legacy picked up allies in the Korx and the Altarians, but both were caught up in an ugly war with the Yor, leaving them unavailable to assist against the Krynn. However, the Legacy's extensive trade network had brought more advanced technology to the home world, allowing for the development of the first great Legacy capital ship, the Masamune. With its unique "paddlewheel" design and banks of powerful phasors, the Masamune is a slow, bulky ship, but has more than enough firepower to outmatch any opponent of its day. Just three of these great ships would make the final drive to the Krynn home planet and force that aggressor into ignominious defeat.
--

After defeating the Krynn, the Terran Legacy began a long period of expansion, eventually stretching its borders across the galaxy itself, forming a long buffer zone between often combative civilizations. It begame clear during this period that the Masamune battleships could not easily deploy to the edge of the empire in a timely fashion. The much faster Broadswords patrolled the frontier, but had no command ships to hold against a powerful enemy.
So was the Scimitar born. Lighter and slightly less well-armored than the older battleships, this battlecruiser could traverse the interstellar distances that the Masamune could not, and match pace with the older cruiser fleets already deployed to the frontier.
--

Around this time, as the Yor continued to make trouble for our allies the Altarians, and the new threat of the Drengin rolled over potential trading partners, the Arceans, Legacy strategists set upon a bold plan - galactic dominance through speed. Thus they designed the ill-fated Rapier destroyer - a very light but still well-armed cousin to the Broadsword. Legacy Admirals envisioned a rapid strike force of Warhammer dropships flanked by fleets of Rapiers warping deep into enemy territory to strike a deathblow to an opponent's home world. The plan and the technology were both sound, but fell victim to a cruel twist of fate. A subspace tear event forced the galactic restriction of warp travel to just 5 parsecs, and the Legacy's costly tactical advantage was lost. Only one Rapier was ever produced, and was then quickly re-purposed as a Broadsword escort.
--

By this time, hostilities had finally broken out with the Yor, and the Legacy now faced a pitched battle across many parsecs, this time without the advantage of speed. To make matters worse, the Yor had begun to equip their ships with increasingly potent shields. The Legacy needed to answer this technological challenge, and fast.
Thinking quickly, fleet engineers altered the designs of four Scimitar battlecruisers already under construction along the Yor border. They stripped away the top decks of the ships and replaced them with a wide launch platform for small fighters. They then placed a system of newly-developed missile launchers and ECM batteries along the ventral decks. The newly christened Shamshir carriers proved extremely effective against the overconfident Yor, who had not expected their enemy to adapt to a new weapon technology so quickly. The Shamshir would replace the Masamune as the command ships of the fleet.
--

As the war with the Yor dragged on, fleet scientists worked fervently to develop a ship that would both defeat the Yor and meet the challenges of the post-war period (by now the Drengin were sending massive expeditionary fleets across the war zone as a show of force to both the Legacy and the Altarians). The Legacy set about construction of the largest vessels the galaxy had ever seen - the dreadnought-class Gae Bolga. Heavily armored against the Yor's missile batteries and with a startling array of weapons, the first Gae Bolga brought the war to a definitive end and ensured the continuing dominance of the Legacy fleet.
--

As the possibility of a lasting peace drew closer with the defeat of the Yor, only one aggressor remained standing against the free sentients of the galaxy - the Drengin. They wasted little time in declaring war on the weaker Altarians and Arceans. The Legacy was called to their aid, and thus began a long and bloody battle for the future of civilization.
To face this final threat, the Admirals returned to the old rapid strike idea, but on a much grander scale. They commissioned a new dreadnought, the Morningstar. A long-range capital ship armed with a heavy complement of the most advanced lasers and row upon row of new mass drivers, uniquely suited to piercing the Drengin's defenses. Along side this behemoth would come its sister ship, the Gungnir - a massive troop transport only slightly less armed and with thick armor and ECM fields. Together, pairs of these ships would strike deep into the heart of Drengin space and engage the densely defended home worlds. Escorted by the best ships from every class of the fleet, these leviathans of space would lead the charge into the final confrontation with the Legacy's enemies, and promise a new dawn for freedom-loving sentients everywhere.

Great design, TG_Steeler.

I like how all the ships look similar and different nonetheless.
I'm working on a transport (almost done) and a spore ship (planned) for my terran fleet at the moment.

I almost never get to huge ships, but I made one last night during "Return of the Dreadlords" mission in the DA Campaign. Those Dreadnoughts would probably make my computer blow up, it has trouble with PubMaster's ships, approx 10 FPS when I am viewing them in the shipbuilder!

I dont have a good computer though, need a non-laptop computer that I can play on

I will be hopefully making some new ships soon for my AAR...and should be able to post them in the next few days

TG_Steeler, awesome ships. I love the names you have for them, most being swords Are they all swords or just most of them?

hey, fleet designers!

for of all, i have to say i'm mightily impressed by some of you.

i have a few questions for you. how many ship classes do you design when building a fleet? do you use more than the classic GC2 roles? if you do, what extra roles do you build ships for?

i can think of:

Huge-hulled combat ships
Large- " " "
Medium-" " "
Small- " " "
Tiny- " " "

Colonizers
Constructors
Miners
Surveyors
Scouts
Cargo-hulled transports
Huge-hulled transports

also, do you rename them to replace core ship designs, so that the AI will use them? do you build ship models that the AI wouldn't know to use? for example, i usually build small- and tiny- hulled constructors. anyone know if the AI would use these (esp. if i moved the files and made them to be core ship designs)?

Thanks, Galen. Yes, they are all weapons or weapon-related. Longinus was the name of the soldier who reported;y pierced the side of Jesus on the cross, hence the "Spear of Longinus". The gladius is a short Roman sword that more or less shares a silhouette with my frigate. A shamshir is a Persian variant of the scimitar, hence the ship name. And the Gae Bolga was the ultimate weapon of the Celtic hero CĂșchulainn, sort of like a spear, but it would enter a man through one path and exit via 30, making it a messy sort of trick to pull off. In any case, it kicked a lot of ass. The rest I'll just assume are obvious to most people.

Dsytopic -
Wikipedia has a pretty good breakdown of different naval ship classes through the centuries. For the purposes of GalCiv, I like to divide them across the hull types like so:

Tiny: Satellites, drones, fighters
Small: Frigates, corvettes, corsairs
Medium: Cruisers, destroyers
Large: Battleships, battlecruisers
Huge: Dreadnoughts, carriers, miscellaneous big things

Although convention dictates classifying ships by things like length, displacement, or armament, you learn quickly from history that you can pretty much call ships whatever seems appropriate for the age.

It's usually more satisfying to name a ship after its role than its hull. For example, corvettes were typically short range coastal ships, so that would be good for a ship you intended to park in a defensive orbit. Frigates, on the other hand, are a more generic escort ship. Cruisers are for "force projection," or sticking your nose out into enemy territory. Battlecruisers are closer to a battleship, but faster and less heavily armored. Once you get larger than a battleship, you can apply whatever fun names you like, since we have no real modern day analog for huge hulls other than carriers.

To mix things up, I also like to scale ship classes up and down with a "light" and "super" prefix. So you could see a small hull "light destroyer" or large hull "light carrier" or a huge "super battleship".
