There were a lot of freezes in the game. I could solve most of them trading with another race and try again (moving chains). After I've turned off "follow auto ships" most of the freezes are gone. Until now - nothing seems to work. In the file debug.err I find some entries with: "Debug Message: Error flipping back buffer to primary buffer.
Debug Message: n/a". What's going wrong?

I'm new to the game and forums, so I'm not sure if these are bugs, but there are two things which have repeatedly annoyed me:

AI attacks without declaring war: A couple times a computer has attacked my freighters, star bases, even the ships orbiting my planet without any real reason or consequences. In the last example the Thalan Empire had a friendly rating with me, but they were literally hunting down my vulnerable forces.

Unequal Point Distribution: I've noticed when trying to customize the races at game start that some of the races seem to have innate bonuses. For instance, if I click reset the abilities for the Terrans and go back to the summary they still have Trade +25, Diplomacy +25, and Logistics +6 with 10 points to spend. Of course, if I then spend some of those points in Trade, Diplomacy, or Logistics the "innate" values are simply replaced. Either way, this seems to make creating a race from scratch unfair.

Oh, and to mimic someone else's comments, I have no idea how the AI manages to spread to some many worlds so quickly. I play on a Large galaxy and its literally a race to every habitable world as the AI fills up the entire galaxy. That being said, is there any use for the PQ 0 planets?

When I start the game up I just get a blank screen. This only happens when my desktop resolution is set to 1280 x 1204 and the ingame resolution is set to 1024x768. I can fix the problem if I either change my desktops resolution to 1024 x 768 or change the ingame resolution to 1280 x 1024.
Heres my debug.err

The game does not run outside the desktop resolution on some systems. As you've already found though, the solution is simple: run the game at your desktop resolution. If you want to run it at a lower resolution, you can also use windowed mode.

I experienced something that looks like a bug in my game today.
On two on my planets the population in stuck and not increasing anymore, even though the maximum hasn't been reached.
The two planets are quality 4, the pop is stuck around 2.6B (not the same exact number for both) while the max is 6B. The morale on the planets is normal ( >70% ) and shouldn't prevent the growth of the population from happening.

Am I missing something ?

Am I missing something ?

Population will only grow so far (the cap is based on the planet's class), but this is generally only noticeable on low-class worlds. See the wiki for more details.

MAX POPULATION ISSUE:

Applies to multiple planets in my current game...

Building a farm on sectors with a bonus is not always applying even the farm's base addition to the max. population for the planet. Destroying the "useless" farm gives an insane max. population.

Here is a link to a screenshot of one of the planets after having razed the farm. You can see my max. population went from 6 to 100 billion! (NO mods used or alterations made.)

Russon III (max pop 100 b)

The screenshot also shows that I'm now at a -10 mt/wk for food production. Is this a textual update issue (prior to razing the farm) or something more?

Purchased the game 2 weeks ago and installed the current patch/version prior to playing. Running at 1280x800, nothing else unusual happening. Can send debug text if desired (although I saw nothing of relevance there).

EDIT: This issue does resolve itself if you completely exit and restart the game and load your saved game.

Hi, here are some bugs I've found in the latest version:

1. I was researching Expert Logistics, nearing completion, when my spies stole the Advanced Logistics, which I already had researched. This cleared the progress on Expert Logistics back to zero.

2. Confirming "String not found" reported by Darkspire.

3. Incorrect time estimate, reported multiple times, please fix this. When selecting a project to be built, the time estimate just above the Buy/Build buttons is almost never correct. I have to build and demolish in order to find out how long it will take.

4. Scroll wheel doesn't scroll the list of events in GNN report or the list of races in quarterly reports, but works in some other lists, thankfully, such as the Build Queue on a planet.

Looking forward to future updates with more fixes!

Roman

P.S. Not sure if you are interested in really minor cosmetic bugs; here's one:

* In the build queue, the current project has a progress bar that consists of two gradients: a red one and a green one. If I scroll down in the build queue and then back up, only the green gradient remains. I'd rather the other bugs get fixed instead though.

Not sure if this is a 1.4x issue, but I can't remember the exact version I was currently using. Anyways, I just did I total system overhaul, switched everything over (aka total rebuild from scratch). System stats are as follows:
Proc: Core 2 Duo E6300
Mobo: Intel DG965WH
RAM: 2 GB Kingston DDR2
Hard Drive: Maxtor 160 GB sata2, Seagate 250gb IDE
Video: onboard Intel G965 Express ChipSet
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2

(note: latest drivers for everything straight from Intel's website, latest patches I could get from Microsoft)

From:

Proc: AMD 2800+
Mobo: ASUS A7V8X-X
RAM: 1 GB DDR
Hard Drive: Seagate 250gb, WD 80 GB
Video: ATI 9600XT
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2

Minor settings in galciv2:
Resolution: 1280x1024
AA: off
Throttle Frame Rate: On
Disable city lights on dark side of planet: On

With my old pc, everything ran fine, and it still does on the new one. After reinstalling/activating/patching (from the 1.4x direct download on the main page) I ran it, and I've run into one small but very annoying graphical glitch, which is next to impossible to describe, but that's what screenshots are for.

If it was static, I could live with it, but it's not. I jumps around the screen like that, very very rapidly. It's like the bottom few pixels of the "c" don't know where to go. This has occurred on every game I've loaded/created since the shift. If anyone could shed some light on this, please! Thanks.

Eventime, please post the contents of your debug.err file. It's located in the same directory you installed the game at, just open it with notepad and copy/paste it all into a reply here.

Right-o, so here's the last debug.err file (fired it up, saw glitch, closed it down)

Eventime, try turning off point sprites.  This should force your game to run in hardware mode, which should improve your frame rate if nothing else.  You won't get any background stars and some of the weapon effects, but you'll get better performance.  I find it odd that your video card has new drivers but it still runs in software (emulation) mode by default. Your card isn't speciallized for 2D like some Matrox cards, is it?
Current Display Mode: 1152 x 864 (32 bit) (85Hz)
Debug Message: Game Resolution: 1280 x 1024

You might also try matching resolutions. It is never a good idea to run a game at higher than desktop resolutions.
Toward CariElf, shutting off point sprites didn't do anything save what you said it would, but at least the stars are gone. I doubt the video card is designed for 2D however.
Toward Moosetek13, I've tried running at different resolutions, matching and not matching my desktop resolution, and to no effect unfortunately. (was the first thing I tried) I'm considering just uninstalling/reinstalling/patching the game sometime later tonight to see if just by chance some file got slightly messed. If not, I can just train my eye to ignore the bloody thing.

Just started playing again after a few months. Fetched the game clean from stardock and right in my first game I noticed a few issues.

After a few minutes, my screen started to flicker and weird artifacts appeared. This degradation continues if I perform mouse actions until the entire screen becomes an unreadable blob. Unfortunately, I do not have any screenshot of this, nor can I reproduce it, but I suspect its a video card problem, possibly overheating (Asus A6K notebook held on my lap in bed, so this is quite possible by accidentally blocking air intake vents or something).
Repositioning of the laptop and a reboot fixes this.

Second (unrelated issue) is reproduceable and involves my 'Next Turn' button disappearing. This seems to happen randomly, and a fresh load used to fix it. However, now I have a save game where when I press the 'Next Turn' button nothing happens. I can move around, click on planets, but no ships move and I never get the button back again. I have saved the savegame for possible future study.

Eventime, I'm not sure what else to suggest to you aside from disabling any graphical options you can until/if you find one that solves the issue. However, if you plan to get a new video card for your new machine rather than using the onboard video permanently, the new card should hopefully solve the issue since that'll change pretty much everything video-related. in one shot.

If more info or the savegame is desired please let me know.

Ender, please do post the full debug.

Crash in the first few weeks of the first campaign. Debug log below. I have an autosave which crashes every time I try to load it. Emailing the savegame.

On a different note, I've posted two other sets of bug reports and never got a reply; I'm sure you're busy but it did rather discourage me from putting any more effort into filing bug reports. For all I know, they could be getting ignored altogether. A simple "OK" would be great (or better still, a real bug database?)

or better still, a real bug database?

Any mails to [email protected] go straight into the official bug tracker. If you're having a crash that isn't caused by hardware or driver issues as far as can be told, the best thing you can do is grab SmartException from the free stuff section in SDC and run it before you run the game. If GC2 crashes, SE will pop up with a report for you to send to gc2bugs which is more detailed than the debug alone and more likely to help the devs isolate it.

* For smaller improvements, leaving functional components on for upgrades, since it's easier to yank 30 things from the list at the top if need be than to carefully place them all back just so you can change 3 engines.

In the options section you can check/uncheck a box that will leave all the funtional parts of the ship there when you go to upgrade it.
I think the description is "remove functional parts from ships for upgrades" and it defaults to being checked (I believe).

My own bug offering has to do with the GALACTIC GUIDE BOOK.

I have now played two games in which I built this (very early) in order to use some fast scouts to grab as many goodies as possible.
Both times after I have built it i still can only survey with ships equipped with a survey module.
Sad tiny scouts, had to destroy the little buggers.

The Galactic Guide Book's description isn't entirely accurate--it actually makes the survey module free, but you still have to put it on the ships (it still takes space).

Thanks for the info.

ender1983, if you still have the save game and you haven't already sent it in, please zip it and send it to [email protected].

Any time you have a saved game that reproduces a problem, we will want it.

Two issues just came up for me.

1.
Playing gigantic games with abundant every thing..

I have autosave set to save every turn because of the early beta crashes that I experenced which others have reported in this post and other threads.

It was in late in the game with 4 or 5 Majors and half a dozen minor AI's or so left. I had around 60% of galaxy and was on the way to winning.. I as in clean up mode.
Between me and the Ai's the ship count produced was upto 100 000's with 1000's left in space and planets at the time..

Hit the turn button and game crashed to desktop. Went to reload from autosave and it didn't exist. Loading my quicksave from about 20 turns ago and hit the turn button. Repeat crash to desktop. rebooted system started game and went to load the game and the quicksave was gone as well. Managed to get smart exception to sent a report in but stuffed up the explaination in the discription. You will get a blank report.

Started a new game to see if I could repeat the problem but couldn't.

2. The new game is going ok. I'm at war with the two stronger military powers. I was winning the ground wars but losing in space battles.
Got the plague event and noticed soon after that my abilities had been set back to zero. I was beating off the AI on ground battles with a bonus of 111 to their 27 and then I started to lose these invasions when my and the Ai's soldering bonus dropped to 0. Economic bonus also dropped to zero. Infact I think all civ's lost all bonuses
I still have a saved game if required.

Bakka, please put DA reports in the Beta Reports forum. This thread is only for standard GC2 issues.
