Please post any bugs you are experiencing in the final release version of 1.4 (1.4X) here so we can have them all in one place. If you are running one of the 1.4 Release Candidates or an earlier version, please update and confirm that your issue is present in 1.4X before posting here.

Provide debug.err and/or SmartException reports as appropriate so the devs can quickly find and fix the problems.

Loss of PQ due to defection:
I am playing a game where I let another race colonize the PQ5 planet in my starting system. I usually do this and just let it flip to me through influence. Well it just defected to me and it was PQ4! I had seen this before in other builds and I had just figured it had been degraded by planetary invasion. In this particular game, there have been no wars except for me going to war with a minor to try to steal a rescource from him.

There are 2 things that have been bugging me. They are not really a bug more of an annoyance (but they could be).

Influence win when it is turned off it should not be a factor in the game but this new game I started it is turning into an influence war. When it is turned off the influence bonuses should not be in the game so that influence will no longer be a major factor in the game. Just a thought anyway.

The other thing is when I have a ship that is traveling some ware and it happens to go though a sector where I have a star base as well the sensor rage of the star base drops to what the ship is. I have to keep clicking on the star bases to restore there sensor range every time it happens. More of a pain but whould be nice it it would stop doing that    .

Thank you. As luck would have it, I found an autosave 1 turn before the issue and was able to reload from there (need to save more). But if it happens again, this will be helpful if I haven't saved in a while and don't want to redo dozens of turns, thanks again.

Two things:

1. When you build a starbase, immediately rename it, and then build a module to it with another constructor, the starbase model and tactical map icons duplicate. Sometimes it happens just when renaming a starbase before adding modules. Also if a starbase that has duplicate graphics is destroyed, one model and tactical map icon still remains in the spot where the starbase was. If I save the game and load it, the problem is gone, but it still annoys me to do this to fix it everytime it happens. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it didn't happen before game version 1.3.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and updated it to the 1.40X version. No effect.

2. I'm not sure if this is a bug, but it has caught my eye anyway. Shouldn't The Eyes of The Universe super project give 10 more to sensor range? At least for me it maxes out sensor ranges to 15 for my every unit. No sensors are needed after building the structure. I think it's too good, so I have tried to reduce the effect myself but haven't been able to.

When someone declares war on me the dialogue does not show up any more (it did with 1.31). Also, as somebody mentioned already, the screen when someone surrenders is now missing. Apart from not being able to read their comments any more (shame really..!), war declarations and surrenders now come pretty much as a surprise if you don´t happen to notice the according icons (which are still appearing).


I noticed this as well in my first 1.4 game.

Is it a glitch that will be fixed, I hope?

A minor, minor issue: In this game, everyone's colonization phase is nearly over, almost all realestate is taken. So, I go into constructor mode. I have like 75% of the maps resources and the AIs are now running to get the stuff furtherest away from me before my constructors get there. Okay, so I find a resource in a remote map-edge area. I can send newly made constructors from any of my 30 or 40 colonies except my home planet. I do not know why this is so. I have no problem sending home planet-made constructors to other areas or to upgrade starbases or even plant new ones except right there. The game, for some odd reason, refuses to allow me to do this. It's not a big deal, it's not critical, and it really has no impact on this game. I just thought I'd mention it. It seems every issue I have revolves around the home planet and nothing else. Also noticed, if you immediately go into a planetary screen to manage a planet at the beginning of the turn, and you also happen to conquer a planet through influence, you can still place planetary builds, it registers in the que and you get the sound, but no graphic appears. If you exit then come back to that planetary screen of your newly conquered planet, it will all show again. So, I don't think it's an issue, just a quirk of the game to mention.

I'm currently playing as the Altarian Republic, and when scrolling in the diplomacy screen there are two instances of 'Alan Bradley: Terran Alliance'. I'm playing with all races (no minors have shown up), and the extra is between the Iconians (last on the list) and the real Terran Alliance (first). It has the same technologies as the real TA, but no ships or planets.



I get the same thing.

Doesn't seem to break anything, just annoying when you keep on seeing that smug little @#$@#% 2x

Two issues with XENO ETHICS - Neutral Alignment

1 - I have researched Xeno Ethics, select Neutral Alignment, I do not have the 2500BC necessary to pay so I am going to be charged 10 BC for 250 weeks (!). Either during this turn, or the one immediately after, my credits are reset to 0. I have tried various values between 100 and 2400CR (by doing few turns either gaining or loosing credits overall before completing the Xeno Ethics research) and always with the same result.


2 - One of the advantages of Neutral alignment is that this makes all tiles on a planet immediately available for use (rather than having to research Soil Enhancement, Habitat Improvement and Terraforming).

The problem is that once I have selected Neutral Alignment and all tiles are now available for use on all my planets, the PQ value displayed of the planets does not match the actual tiles count IF I had already researched and upgraded at least one tile on the planets.

For example:

Beginning of game:
Antares I is PQ12 with two yellow tiles

Mid game: Researched Soil Enhancement, upgraded both yellow tiles, PQ shown is now 14 (with 14 available tiles and two orange tiles)

Later on: Researched Xeno Ethics and Aligned with Neutral (did not research or acquire Habitat Improvement or Terraforming prior to this). PQ shown is now 20 but there are only 18 tiles available on the planet!

I tried also this as an experiment: after the Mid Game point above, I researched Habitat Improvement and Terraforming and upgraded all orange and red tiles on Antares I. PQ shown is now 18 with 18 tiles available on the planet. I then researched Xeno Ethics and Aligned with Neutral (I did not build the Orbital Terraformer), now PQ shown is 24 but there still are only 18 tiles available on the planet.

Nothing major, just annoying.

I am close to 350 turns into a massive sized galaxy sandbox game with 6 other races, I am playing as a custom race and all the AI are set to Bright. I have already wiped out two and am at war with two others. I have like 150 planets and my resources are so staggering (about 4x everyone else) that the game is over, its just a matter of conquering the rest of the map. I have an alliance with another race, but when I go to there diplomacy screen there is an (Attack...) option and when I clikc on it to try and get them to war against one of my enemies, the popup has no names in it. If I click (add) it puts the line (Attack...) with no target listed in there side of the trade, and if I then clikc that off it puts (no string found) back where the (Attack...) option should be.

Also, on to the AI problems I have encountered. I just now discovered 4 unclaimed planets about 3 sectors away from one of the conquered civilizations homeworlds. Why were they never claimed by the AI, he needed em? One of the minor races that started beside my homeworld has been sending constructors across the entire map and building a bunch of influence starbases in the opposite corner of the map, why?. My ally has built like 6 influence starbases right in the center of my empire... he has an alliance with me? I have repeadatly given money and technology a race, and they still will not become friendly with me to I can make them my ally. Some of the planets I have conquered with traditional warfare have had nothing but factories on them, no starport.

I have researched miniturization and am still only building tiny and small ships, my new tiny fighter has 4 attack in railguns, and 7 defense in shields, one of my opponets only has laser 3 technology, so a fleet of 6 of there ships has about 10 laser attack and no defense. I needed to take out one of there fleets and didnt have one of my fleets nearby, so I just sent in a single fighter, he tore them to pieces and moved on. Since then, the AI has more than once sent fleets against single fighters and lost, why does it keep attacking in a hopeless situation.

In version 1.31, I discovered how to play. Go to the "Device Manager" and disconnect from the Internet so I could safely disable Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect. GalCiv2 did not like them running in the background.

My first 1.31 game was a "Gigantic" galaxy size in which I ultimately had about 130 planets and scored a Technological Victory. There were dozens of ships, dozens of constructors, and numerous rally points. All was well.

After upgrading to 1.4X, all was not well. My first game with 1.4X was a "Huge" galaxy size. I was just getting started when the game locked up.

Jan. 1, 2226:
Click on "TURN"
A pop-up says "We can't travel that far...." (All ships were within their range. I'm getting a bad feeling about that.)
Click on "FIND"
A colony ship has movement left, so I get to colonize a planet.
- Buy starbase
- Build factory
- Set focus on social
- Click on "Build Ship"
I don't even get to selecting the ship I want to build when up pops "Research Complete." (Something doesn't seem right)
I select the next item to be researched and then have to go back to the planet to select the ship.

Jan. 8, 2226:
Click on "FIND"
Nothing happens even though there are ships ready to move.
Click on "TURN"
"TURN" is greyed out and game hangs up.

I downloaded 1.4 a couple of days ago and found really weird things...

I dont have the construction capital available anymore whatever the level
of factories...
I cant read anymore the spy comments...
Resource tiles are all grey again...
the research speed has slowed drastically...
(i hardly can colonize more than 5/6 planets before getting surrounded by other races which have already colonized 10/12 planets even at normal level)
and many other (bad) surprises...

I was wondering if there is a possiblity of getting the 1.3 back ?
that s the version which gave me the most fun i must say...

I had just purchased game and found it didn't work.Went to your sight and downloaded 1.4 patch. Which worked!!! played that eve. Next morning woke early started game and immediately noticed some thing wrong with screen. it had expanded like a wide screen but Iwas only able to see left side of maps exc. I tried to set my properities screen well past 1024x settings to no avail. I removed game, reinstalled and ran patch. Its working great! but when I saved and ended game and immediately ran game it expanded again. Soooo now I removed game again reinstalled ran patch and its working but to keep game turned off autosaves have not saved and put my computer in sleep mode to keep game going which is rediculous. PLEASE HELP with this propblem. Thanks in advance for any Info.

Try opening the file My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\prefs.ini. Near the top you will find lines for width, height, and fullscreen. Set the width and height to 1024 and 768 (or whatever resolution you want to run), and set fullscreen = 0. Then save the file and try running the game.

Thanks for the quick reply. Though when I went to prefs.ini. The screen was set ay 1024x768 but the fullscreen was set =1 so I changed to =0 and saved. Loaded game and immediately did not see opening movie, hit left mouse and went to set up screen but rather then having options encased in white background they were Black writing and the screen was like in a full screen T,V, sort of. loaded my save and the game was shown super large where I can only see left half of Maps and Info screens. I then hit windows button on keypad closed game and checked prefs.ini. They were still set as you told me. so then I removed the saved game thinking that might help again to no avail. so now I either have to uninstall game again and reload and never turn off my computer to play a campaign (with the hopes that My area doesn't get a brown out or power failure) lol or hope you have more sugestions with my problem. My problem is I don't get an error report to send you... Thanks again and look forward to seeing your next reply.

I also went back to my doc's and removed all ships I had made to this point hopeing that would work but it didn't. all rmoved save are in my recyle bin and game still does not work. soooo what now?

I've finally upgraded to V1.4x and finished my first game with it. I immediately noticed a few rather interesting bugs.

1) Superior Duranthium is (still) better Tri-Strontium and Kanvium, both of which are further down the tech tree. I saw this in V1.31 as well

2) when the Terrans eliminated the Yor, there was no conquest movie and no notification through GNN updates or even the sidebar. I am not even sure what exactly happened, it was so sudden I would have thought the Yor had surrendered. When other races surrendered, I got a notice on the sidebar.

3) Phantom Attacks. I regard this as by far the most serious bug ... if it is actually happening. I have the option set to show me all the combats my ships are engaged in. On several turns, I watched four or so fights, then was notified of eight or ten combats in the GNN report. I expect to see all the battles if I have the option clicked.

More importantly: I think the computer had one of my ships attack another race's ship and start a war, without asking my permission or alerting me to it at all. The Yor suddenly declared war on me. The GNN report said that one of my ships had destroyed one of their constructors. Problem: only one of my warships was even off-world, and it had a course set for a planet I had recently flipped. So, either the game used it to attack another ship without asking my permission ... or it believed an attack had taken place that had not actually happened, and declared war on me as a result. I didn't make any save games around this point or preserve the debug files, but if it happens again I certainly will.

If there is one thing about computers I hate more than their habit of ignoring what I tell them to do, it's doing things I have expressly told them not to do.

I just feel sorry to insist but i d like a few explanations/confirmations :

In the version 1.4 i downloaded a couple of days ago it seems that
a few things have changed :

1) dont have manufacturing capital building anymore

2) when getting the neutral research centers (the red ones) research factories
dont upgrade anymore.

3) the text shown on spying result frame is : string not found... all the time.

I m just wondering if those "bugs" are intentional or real bugs. I already noticed that the overall game is way slower than in 1.3 version as far as development of colonies and research are concerned.

It sounds as if you may have had a corrupted install of the patch--I haven't seen those problems myself. You may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling the game and (if you installed from retail discs) patching using the standalone installer on the downloads page.

Starport bug.
A planet defected to me that was upgrading an older factory on a 100% bonus tile. I clicked on it to buy the upgrade, but changed my mind. I thought I clicked on another tile to buy a starbase. but when I clicked buy. A starbase appeared on the bonus tile. I then immediately demolished the starbase and began building a factory on the bonus tile. Really annoying so far, but now it gets buggy. I clicked on a new tile so that could start up my building cue, and looked for a starport, and it was no longer on the list.
I am now the proud owner of a planet that cannot build a starbase. I have saved and reloaded, and still I cannot build a starbase. debug.err to follow
