Alternative Metaverse & Statistics

http://altmeta.kryofx.com/
GalCiv2 AltMeta+Statbot

I am happy to introduce a new AltMeta and Statbot for GC2, combined on one site.

The main page features rankings of Empires and Characters by AltMeta Score and Games Submitted.

Empire stat pages give graphs of various game statistics and rankings of the players in the empire.

Player pages give the same graphs for each individual character.

The AltMeta scores are a straight total, with scores decayed by 1/6 of their value per month;
after six months, scores are no longer counted at all. All stat graphs also cover only games
submitted in the past six months.

At this time the site only gathers data on the top 50 empires on the official metaverse,
and the characters within them. No unaligned players or other empires are inclued at this time.

This is a personal project, not endorsed or supported by Stardock, so direct any questions or
comments to me and me alone. Hopefully everyone finds this useful

I love the graphs for both the players and empires. For the empires especially, it allows you a visual representation of their rise and fall. Great work Kryo, giving us a much more incisive way too look at metaverse statistics...thanks!

My opinion is that the AltMeta depreciation should bottom-out at a small value, such as 10-20%, so that people & empires don't completely disappear, but it still allows new players/empires to rise in the rankings.

I do see quite a large difference in my Metaverse rankings vs AltMeta. I was quite surprised to see that my main character was ranked #3 on the AltMeta (and ranked #1 in two categories), when I'm #33 on the original Meta. I wasn't even watching the overall AltMeta rank because I assumed I was much further down. I frequently submit games, but am not by any means a great player. Frankly, I don't feel like I should be in the number three spot, so from a very individual perspective, the scoring system seems like it's maybe a little bit off.

Anybody else have some thoughts about this?

This was actully discussed quite a bit. There are the All Time categories that keep track of this but for the regular ranking we did discuss retaining 5% but since submitting a single new score gives you 20 times the benefit it was considered why bother. Also the AltMeta isn't a replacement for the offical MV it really just adds to it.

The official MV has folks far above you that haven't played in over a year. The AltMeta is really a far more accurate representation of who is playing now, not who used to play (except the all time categories)

I don't feel like I should be in the number three spot, so from a very individual perspective, the scoring system seems like it's maybe a little bit off.

Not necessarily true. Another part of the offical MV is that it penalizes those that play many small games versus fewer but higher scoring games. Again on the basis that the AltMeta is an enhancement to and not a replacement for the official MV, we felt that we should remove this penalty.

One thing about the AltMeta is that you can rise very quickly, far quicker than the official MV, if you play a lot of games, but at the same time you can fall very quickly if you stop playing games.

I think it's good to have both of these although between the two I think the AltMeta gives you more features with it's graphing ability and is fairer. Particularly in recognizing folks that prefer to play the smaller games or lower scoring victory types that otherwise get overshadowed in the official MV.

BTW we will be working on adding our Metaverse League games to the AltMeta in some kind of yet to be defined pretty display.

Also don't forget to check out the various banners you can use.

Here AltMeta Class Beta.

All of the links of the OP are still good, if you follow them they explain pretty much everything. It's seems we did lose some of the pictures when the AltMeta hosting changed but otherwise all of this information should be pretty accurate.

Someone asked me about the Kzinti Empire and their current place as #1 in the AltMeta and how that compared to other empires stay at number 1.

This is an interesting piece of information but thinking about that made me wonder if there was some way to add something similar to the All Time categories but for Empires instead of individuals.

I know that the ALtMeta is nicely setup for the 9 classes that it currently shows but an All Time empire listing might be a nice thing to add if there was some time to do it and a reasonable place to display the info.

Anyway just a thought.

Yes, that would be interesting to see. My empire has been at #1 for almost 4 months, and I wanted to get a sense of how that measured up to the other large empires from the past.

I have compared the all-time totals with the other empires by clicking on them one by one, but there isnt an all-time category list for empires. It would also be nice so that older empires might be inactive, but not forgotten entirely.

Thanks Mumble!

It's been broken off-and-on for the last three weeks. They keep fixing it, but then it stops working again.

Looks like the server started acting up again, and the resume code didn't work like I'd hoped. I'll have to tinker with it when I get a chance.

There's nothing that you need to do in general. If you're in a new empire then you have to let Kryo know to include it, but AFAIK new members should get picked up automatically for an established empire.

So basically the only thing you need to do is to let Kryo know there is some kind of problem which you've done with the above post and I'm sure he'll be along to fix it shortly.

When? The altmeta only updates once per day, so it can take up to 24 hours for changes to show.

Afte reading through this thread and looking at the Altmeta page, I'd like to say thank you to Kryo, Mumblefratz and GreatEmperor for your work in putting it all together. I'm sure many people that the timing to check our scores, but few thank you properly for doing your work. If there are other's involved in the programing of the Altmeta, also thank you to you. I do like it.

All the real work was Kryo's. All the members of the now defunct Metaverse Council (MVC) did was to act as surrogates for the metaverse playing community and hammer out a definition of what "we" as metaverse players wanted. However it did take quite a bit of effort on the part of a number of people to do this and I'm sure I can speak for all of them when I say we collectively appreciate your thanks.

You mentioned myself and TGE but there were a number of others that made significant contributions and I may as well take a moment to mention the entire MVC.

AlexAtticus
DethAdder
G.W. Swicord
M.B.M
Macmatt
MarshallOneil
Mumblefratz
Quixen
Syrrus K
Thagee
TheGreatEmperor
Vukasika

Later to join the Metaverse Council were Wyndstar and Neilo.

A solid core of the Metaverse Council were instrumental in forming the Metaverse League (MVL) and are still very active within the MVL and the forums. The activity of the MVL basically superceded that of the MVC which has since passed on. I like to think that the community spirit that was evidenced by the MVC is still alive and well and ready to act if it again becomes necessary.

Mumblefratz, I think it's great that so many people contributed to the Altmeta and also had the Metaverse Council. Indeed, you all deserve recognition - and special bonus to Kryo.

I think anothergreat addition to the Altmeta or the Metaverse itself would be a listing of all past #1 players and I guess the dates that they held that position.

I think i mentioned this somewhere else but i seem to have lost it. Sorry if this seems like a rerun. When is there going to be a "top 200" medal? XD
