Turn Based Combat?

Turn Based Combat?

Hi Guys,

what do you think of the idea of turn based combat, rather than watching the automatic combat?

This could be an option added to the game which would add a great element of tactics to the game, rather than the seemingly random cinema effect. Players would then be able to choose which ship attacks what and with which weapon. You could also get to have the option to retreat or surrender in the combat as well, maybe even ramming!

Pros:
More Tactics
Achievement feelings when you win a hard fight
Games take longer to play (always a good thing)
Better experience to refine ship designs, you'll know what works better than something else
Added depth to the game
a seemingly more understandable reason for winning or losing the battle

Cons:
less cinematic feel to space combat
Comp AI programming may be an issue
Big programming job in general

Well thats my idea anyway, what do you think?

Oh, I have no doubt that StarDock could put together a tactical AI that's up to the task, but it would probably require a lot of development time - more development time than implementing the actual tactical combat itself, I'm guessing. I was just giving my thoughts on why it should be done right, or not at all. A quick-and-dirty implementation could very well do serious damage to the game, not improve it.

Every tac combat supporter wants it to be done right.

A long development time is a given.

I feel that tac combat in a future GalCiv game is doable, marketable, desireable and would be profitable for Stardock.

Well, the point I'm trying to make (and re-reading my post, I see I did a poor job of making it) is that it's not realistic for an expansion. Some people seem to want them to just throw it into the expansion pack now that they've now got a couple extra months.

I agree, and I'm looking forward to it.

I'm glad there is no tac combat.

Even turn based tactical combat has it's problems. A properly implemented tactical system would be its own game in a sense (Like the Total War series) and would detract from the overall experience that Galciv is. Not to mention, the problems in creating a tactical AI. RTW and even RTR (Total Realism mod for RTW - try it) have major problems with the AI - there are just too many variables for the AI to consider to create a sound overall strategy and sub-strategies for a battle. Go to the RTR forums and look at teh AAR's. There are players there with Huge kill ratios fighting against vastly superior forces - and winning.

Even with games like Moo and Moo2, a reasonable player could expect to have the game wrapped up, if not won in a very short amount of time (we're talking before Sheilds III) beacuse there are ways to make use of tactical AI problems. And yeah the MOO system was fun (there's nothing like watching 17000 ships get blown away by your black whole generator) it probably wouldn't have the exact same charm in today's world.

The Beauty of the GalCiv combat is that its like watching Football. You don't have control, but you still get all excited about that big battle and cheer for your side. I'm sure we've all had the preverbial "YESS!!" moment when our fleets pull a victory out of nothing. You just can't run out and High-Five someone cause they'll think you're crazy.

And besides, paraphrasing from Sun-Tzu - It's the ruler's job to declare war, and the general's job to make war and one should not interfere with the other.

Now, I'm gonna grab a drink and scream at my monitor as I invade those Torian dudes.

GO BIG BLUE!!! WOOOOOO!!

I'm a geezer and my fast twitch muscles have long since atrophied. I have no real interest in anything real time.
