Constant crashes

Constant crashes

constantly crashes

How the hell do you play this dam game when it crashes constantly, i can never get more then 5 to 10 minutes into it, before it crashes. It totally blows away my system. The monitor power indicator turns orange, indicating its not even getting a frigging video signal. I HAVE all the latest drivers for both video and sound and it makes no difference.

IS there even any technical support for this game or not?

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I've noticed practically everyone that has "constant" crashes is running a 2 CPU box (almost always a 3.0 GHZ). Does GalCiv2 just have major problem dealing with a dual processor system?

That's an interesting observation.  I hae a dual SMP box here (not my main machine) and I havne't had problems but..

Just as a test, load up the game, then go to task manager and set the affinity so that it's only running on one processor and see if that helps.

Right-click on "My Computer" on your desktop and click on "Properties". This will bring you window entitled "System Properties", which can also be reached through the Control Panel. Goto the "Advanced" tab and click on the "Settings" button in the box entitled "Performance". In the new window that appears, goto the "Advanced" tab and click on the "Change" button in the box entitled "Virtual Memory". Yet another new window will appear. Select the "Custom Size" radio button and alter the "Initial Size" and "Maximum Size" of your virtual memory. I suggest you set them both to at least 1.5 GB (1536 MB), though more wouldn't be bad, either. Keep in mind that this takes up more space on your C: drive, so make sure you have room.
I followed the directions, but seeing as how you refered to "both" in your directions I feel that I missed something. I only see one drive lable, if I should see more. I do not quite understand what you are asking, but have allocated 1536 megabytes to the custom size of the virtual memory. I shall attempt the program.

I have installed all the latest drivers I could find for display processor sound and have allocated 2000 megabytes of space to the actions mentioned above and the game still crashed, if it is of help here is my latest debugger report.

Judging by that debug.err, your virtual memory didn't change. . .

Here's a screenshot of the window for setting virtual memory on my system:

Link

I have the Initial and Maximum set to different values, but you can set them to the same value. After you've set it up, restart your computer.

Also, it looks like your video drivers are still not up-to-date. It's a Mobility Radeon, so it's understandable, but there is a way to get recent drivers for them. Alot of people here with with Mobility Radeons have been using Omega Drivers, an alternate re-packing of official ATI drivers. Apparently, they work quite well, so it may be worthwhile to try them out. Here's a link to their website:

@Lob1
You still have very old video drivers. There were ATI drivers released last month. Not sure what you are doing there.

Not trying to be rude or mean, this is meant in a helpful way - If you are not so computer savvy, maybe you should try and get a friend to help out...you are obviously not installing the new drivers correctly.

Good Luck!

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I've noticed practically everyone that has "constant" crashes is running a 2 CPU box (almost always a 3.0 GHZ). Does GalCiv2 just have major problem dealing with a dual processor system?

I have noted another case: people whose debug.err reports 2 displays. The first has up-to-date drivers but the game is using the second display to check the D3D configuration and display setting

I have searched at least several hundred links provided by google for several entered texts and the sites I found were less than helpful in updating my drivers. I help can be provided, I would appreciate it.

Lob1, for ATI mobility drivers, you should look here https://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=162&AID=105150

BTW, if I have read correctly, you have 2 CPUs. Have you tried to set the affinity for 1 CPU
Reply #36 Top
For all you runnin beta 1-1beta1, its Highly unstable, recommend you go to beta 3, or back to 1.0x, proably fix a lot of your problems.

Also if you dont know what a beta is by definition... then DONT UPGRADE TO IT.
Cause its a beta after all.

IF it worked fine on a prevous ver, go back to that ver and wait for the finale patch to come out.

So far the most stable ver for me is 1.1beta 3, i played an entire map on large gal, 9 opponents tough difficulty, with alll the added features on 1.1 turned on and it only crashed once out of 300+ turns
Reply #37 Top
That lonk does not work and I have no idea how to set the affinity to one cpu.
That lonk does not work

What do you mean exactly? If you haven' t yet remarked, there is some problem when a _ is in an URL
Reply #40 Top
It worked! I reinstalled without the beta patch and it orks. There have been no crashes so far. I am really impressed with the AI. Unlike most other games, when you take their capitol they actually come to terms with their defeat and sue for peace.
Complete rebuild of computer, reinstall, etc etc and still cant play more then 10 fucking minutes before it blows away my computer.

Well, have you tried windowed mode or other resolutions? I see that you monitor can handle creater resolution.

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)

Have look at the threads about computers with 2 CPUs (even if it is for AMD)? Have you tried to set the affinity for 1 CPU?

Yes, I think that you should try changing your game resolution, and possibly try running in a window also.  I suspect that either your video card or your monitor driver is trying to stretch things incorrectly because of the odd size.

Also, did you try just with the Catalyst drivers? You have a good enough card that it should work fine with the Catalyst drivers.

The other thing I might suggest which I suggested in another thread was to set the affinity of your CPUs so that the game is only running on one CPU.

Same Problem here: Game Crashes all the time!! Running XP Pro with Nvidia GeForce 6600 newest Nvidia drivers and I can't even get through a single turn now before a crash occurs. Any Suggestions?

1)  Update your video drivers with a clean install.
 a) Download the new drivers from your video card manufacturer's website. Usually www.nvidia.com, www.ati.com or www.intel.com.

 b)  Un-install the old drivers and reboot
 c) Cancel the Found New Hardware wizard when you log back into Windows
 d)  Install the new drivers that you downloaded

If you have the most updated drivers but you did not do a clean install when you updated, you may want to re-install your drivers using the method above.

2)  Update your sound drivers.

3) Update to the latest version of Gal Civ 2.

4) Install Smart Exception from the Free Stuff tab in Stardock Central. This generates a crash report when GC2 crashes (unless the computer has locked up or reboots itself) which is useful to us in determining where the crash is occurring.  We will also want your debug.err file.  If you are constantly getting crashes and you need help from a support tech, e-mail [email protected].  Otherwise, e-mail the crash log and the debug.err file to [email protected].  If you have a save game that consistently crashes within a set amount of turns, send that in as well, but you will probably need to zip it.

5) Go to the advanced tab of your display properties and find the Direct3D settings.

 a) Set Antialiasing to be Application Controlled
 b) Set AnsioTropic filtering to be Appliation Controlled
 c) Set Image Settings to be Quality

6) Make sure that your desktop resolution is at least 1024 x 768 at 32 bit color. You may want to try higher resolutions if your video card and monitor support them, but you always want to be at 32 bit color, and the game resolution should never be higher than the desktop resolution.

7) In your My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2 folder, there is a prefs.ini file. You can change the video settings there.

 a) Set Multisample = 0 to disable anti-aliasing, particularly if you have an error in your debug.err file about failing to create a device.
 b) Set HardwareMouseCursor = 1
 c) Set Fullscreen = 0 to run in a window.  If the game resolution is the same size as the desktop resolution, it will still appear to be fullscreen.
 d) If your crashing is occurring after the intro, try setting SkipIntro=1

8) Check to see what codecs you have installed. Many media player programs like WinDVD or Media Portal install codecs on your system and they don't always play nice with other programs.   To see what codecs are installed on your system:

9) Turn off all the music and sfx in the game.  You may also want to try disabling your sound card.  If this works, there may be some issue with your sound driver that un-installing the codecs didn't fix.  You may need to re-install your sound drivers after having un-installed your codecs, or you may be able to fix the problem by changing your audio acceleration.

 a) Right click on the My Computer icon and select properties.
 b) Click on the hardware tab
 c) Click on the Device Manager button.
 d) Right click on Audio Codecs and choose properties. The properties tab of the dialog that comes up will list and allow you to remove the audio codecs installed on your computer.    e) You can follow the same steps for the Video Codecs.
 f) There are instructions in this MSDN article for re-installing the Windows audio and video codecs:

 http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;893681&spid=1007&sid=1498#EUADAAA

10) Run dxdiag and the Direct3D and DirectSound tests to make sure that there is nothing wrong that DirectX can detect

 a) Click on your windows start button
 b) Click on Run
 c) type the word dxdiag in the dialog box and click OK.
 d) Allow it to check to see if your drivers are digitally signed, let it run its tests
 e) Run the Direct3D and DirectSound tests.
 f) Click Save all information and save the file somewhere you'll be able to find it.

CariElf, maybe you should start a new thread with that list and sticky it at the very top. Maybe also lock it, so it doesn't get bogged down with endless debug lists.

@CariElf,

I second BV's motion.

Great list btw! It is useful for more than troubleshooting GC2 - it can be used to troubleshoot a lot of things!
