Constant crashes

constantly crashes

How the hell do you play this dam game when it crashes constantly, i can never get more then 5 to 10 minutes into it, before it crashes. It totally blows away my system. The monitor power indicator turns orange, indicating its not even getting a frigging video signal. I HAVE all the latest drivers for both video and sound and it makes no difference.

IS there even any technical support for this game or not?

Try posting your Debug.err file.

And if you've got the beta, it's your fault. Betas are an "as-is" deal.

i have run it straight out of the box, with the first patch and with the beta patch it makes no frigging difference. It constantly crashes no matter what i do.

I've seen this happen before but I can't remember what was done about it (I don't remember if there was a problem with the latest catalysts or what). A good idea would be go get on the IRC channel (go to the Chat section in SDC and type /join #GalCiv if you don't know how) during business hours and see if you can get ahold of the devs directly.
My guess, and this is a guess, is that you want to play the game on your primary monitor.

Hmmm. That doesn't sound healthy.

Anyhoo. Do you have GPU Throttling on? ATI's GPU Recover?

I had the same problem, only much worse. Total system freeze, corrupted (or no) display upon reboot, a real fun exercise in troubleshooting >.> I don't think the game was the problem, though.

Unfortunately, I'm still not sure what the cause was. The PSU fan had been sickly for awhile, so I got around to replacing it. Cleaned the dust off the graphics card. Uninstalled .NET (I'd recently installed it to view the 'pedia, and installed Catalyst Constrol Center while I was at it - Some portion of my brain believed that may have been the cause)

I wasn't very keen on the idea of changing one variable at a time when each failure caused my system to scream for mommy

I finally found a reason to switch from Win2k to WinXP, and haven't re-installed much yet. Guess I'll stop tweaking config & security long enough to see if it's decided to do it again.

I DO play on my primary monitor, i have even disabled the secondary monitor. It makes no difference.

Edit: Damn my habit of leaving reply windows open for silly amounts of time!

Still going to try it, though

hey guys i too am experiencing constant crashes in game, but i do not know how to obtain for you the debug.err file. i have all the latest drivers etc and correct moniter settings....so thats all im left with i think. please let me know where to find this file so i can maybe get this damn game working. thanks
Reply #9 Top
It is in your galciv2 folder and can be opened with notepad/wordpad. Just copy and paste the text into a new topic with a description of your problem.
yep, me crash too
I had the same issues and the same errors in my debug file. After going into the game options and unchecking the "Full Screen" option, I was able to play for over 7 hours with out a crash.
tried that. Tried every conceivable combination of video, audio, and interface options, nothing has made a difference. I mean sometimes i too can go 7 hours, but sometimes it's no more than 15 minutes. *shrugs*
Reply #13 Top
I had the problem as well. Gal Civ2 and Civ4 would completly and utterly kill my laptop to where there was no other possibility besides an hardboot, but Battle for Middle Earth worked fine.

However Gal Civ2 works fine on my new laptop.. So I'm happy.
I have constant crashes also. Pi**es me off . This game I found a star system with a 27 planet, cl-15, cl-12 and 2 cl-8s
and cant play it.

I am having the same problem and have update my drivers using the live update option. Still the game crashes when it begins to load after the selectionc of the race, galaxy, ect. I do not understand how such a game could have such popularity with so many crashes. I value any help given.

A thing to learn: Live update, auto update, search for update etc are completely and utterly USELESS. You have to actually find the drivers yourself. 2004 are pretty ancient, did you not get a popup warning you?

Anyway, here's the drivers I use for my x9000. If they don't work, follow the link in phoenix's post for the omega drivers.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I've noticed practically everyone that has "constant" crashes is running a 2 CPU box (almost always a 3.0 GHZ). Does GalCiv2 just have major problem dealing with a dual processor system?

Don't get me wrong; I was crashing like mad in Beta 2 using a single processor 2.53 ghz system, so I know there are other causes of crashes. Just noticing a trend that's worth mentioning.

A lot of software has issues dealing with dual processor machines. They are definately not the norm - mainstream desktop software is not really designed or coded with these beasts in mind. Same goes for 64 bit boards right now - until they are the mainstream, those who use them should expect glitches now and then.

In a few years this will change - Vista will see to that. Start saving up now; you will have to upgrade hardware to get the full benefits of that OS.

I hope that these new "enhancements" are not terribly complecated to operate, I am not as experienced in these things as I would like.

Ah, vista. The problem is that if you have any form of DRM on vista, which I think has been mentioned once or twice (I may be wrong), the new ruling which is basically the RIAA telling people if it comes down to you dying or DRM being broken then they are sorry for the loss, you will be unable to re-format the hard drive. I am not putting up with that, advantages and ease of use aside, I re-format my comp a fair bit. (I'm just learning how to mod the system, and am not so good at it)
If it wasn't for galciv2 I'd have already migrated to Linux. Most of my other games have some basic work-rounds to get it to work, and I'm seeing if one can be found.
But, crashes! ZOMG! *report report report*

LOB1: You need to increase your page file size. That's almost certainly the problem. You don't have enough RAM+virtual RAM.
