High-Res Startrek ships

High-Res Startrek ships

Hey folks.

There are some "ship designer" built startrek ships available, but I have yet to see any real modeled startrek hulls in the download section, so I thought I would put together some high res model conversions of popular startrek ships for GalCiv 2. I hope to cover all the classes from Tiny to Huge.

What I’ve done so far is the Magella class (because the curves are sooOOooo sexy), and I have a link to my progress thus far:

The model will run you about 260,000 triangles ( ! ), but I think that considering the poly count, the performance in GalCiv2 is incredible. Here you can see 10 of the things (2,600,000 faces in total) and as you can see from my frame rate that I am pulling about 10fps (from 60fps before the ships). This is with a Radeon 9800 pro and a P4 1.7. I think I can skim about 100,000 faces off the model with some more optimization.

I hope to cover the following ships, above Magella:

Some form of Runabout or shuttle for Tiny.
??? for small
Defiant for medium
Galaxy and Sovereign for Large
Promentheus for Huge.

Any requests? Suggestions? Cease and desist orders?

Let me know if anyone is interested in getting their hands on these models. My plan is to have them plug into GalCiv as normal ship hulls with mount points and all. Hopefully make use of the mod system soon enough.

Allrighty sounds good, lemme know if you need help stress testing etc, been working as a QA lead for about 7 years even though its not like you need exp or a brain for that matter to test a game

I took a short hiatus, but I am going to get back into it. Just about ready to release an alpha test of a bunch of ships.

Check out the other ships, here:

Umm u can't just take a model (i recognize it) and convert it for use in a game without the creator's permission... *waves finger* naughty naughty illegalness!

I direct you to the image below...

@ LogicSequence Settle down there Skippy. If you would refer to one of Brian’s other posts you would have known that he is using other people’s models. He stated it already. As far as getting the creators permission, the mod hasn't been released yet. So it’s a little premature to be waving a finger. I’m sure Brian will get all the necessary permission before it is released.

as the creator of models that have been used without permission be4, i tend to look out for artists rights. It's just wrong if u don't have permission. that's it.

Out of curiosity, does the game use any kind of LOD filtering to reduce the quality of models when you zoom further out?

Hey spleeze? Woulld it be all right if i just downloaded the mod and used the files to make another ship style? It's a habit of mine. Oh and awesome ships!

LogicSequence, actually I do have permission to use that model.

castun, nope. that is why I need to get that model down in polysize.

Ion, I dont see a problem with that. Hopefully the mod gets finished though! God things got busy all of a sudden.

and that's fine, as long as you have permission from the creator, more power to you.

Spleeze! Have you ever been to the Starfleet Command forums? That game was easy to build ships for. Many folks built many ships for it. I even built a few. The forum for the models is Link

This might give you some ideas for what can be done. I personally built one of the old FASA designs a Romulan Nova Z1 that was quite involved and it only had about 3600 polys. The trick is that the detail is done with textures and a little bit of the poly model. I have seen some exquisitely done models with under 5000 polys. Here is a pic I built up from one of those models. This is one of the lower poly ones but as a ship in game it really looked quite impressive. That is the whole point after all.

This was a composite image made from several layers using wireframe up to a full render. If I was going to do this ship I would probably only add a few more polys around the dish edge to give it a smoother curve. This pic does give some idea as to the polygon layout.
Note: I used this pic as the cover for a 3D Studio Max texturing tutorial PDF I made about 6 years ago. I was given permission by the modeller to use his model for this image. (Sorry I no longer remember who it was) This is just an example to give an idea.

There are my ships thus far. Many of them are built on existing SFC3 ships. A very good resource! Hopefully, once things calm down a bit, I can get some ships out to the community.

Nice work, now that you have your self warmed up, how about some Real ships.

ROMULAN (Rihannsu for those who know what they are talking about)

All the graceful aesthetic ships in ST are Rihanha, id love to see those

Great work!

I have to second that request. Would be really cool to blow up the enemy with a squadron of Warbirds.

would be real cool if there was a link to download any of these ships, they are awesome!

He will make it available for download as soon as he is ready.
Last I heard, the ships were ready, but he was still figuring out how to go about making a nice installer.

Hey Spleeze,

Fantastic work. Only question I have is have you considered a cargo style hull? I don't recall anyone mentioning it in the thread (maybe coz we're all too excited!!!)

This is exciting. Now to customize the game to make the weapons more accurate to Star Trek ships

By the way, a small recommendation regarding the ship sizes. The Prometheus is not a Huge ship. In fact, it's closer to Medium than anything. A ship that would be classified as "Huge" would be the Excalibur.

Just a friendly recommendation
